PULP HEROES: SILVER JOHN – THE WARLOCK JOSS KIFT AND CRAYE SAWTELLE’S HELL-HOUND

I’m continuing my look at Manly Wade Wellman’s pulp hero Silver John, the roaming singer and guitarist who fights supernatural forces in the Appalachian Mountains of long ago, sort of like a countrified Orpheus meets Kolchak. He’s called Silver John because of the silver strings on his guitar and the silver coins he carries in his pockets. For more details click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

I CAN’T CLAIM THAT – With Silver John and his beloved Evadare married now (and if you missed the landmark tales depicting those events click here – https://glitternight.com/2011/06/03/pulp-heroes-silver-john-four-for-friday/  )   the stories stopped going in chronological order, jumping around Silver John’s life past and future. Set BEFORE John’s marriage, this vignette features a warlock named Joss Kift who seeks revenge on our hero for exposing him. A black rooster with its throat cut, a voodoo doll and a black dog hanging from a tree are Continue reading

ELVIRA AND WOLFMAN MAC TONIGHT

Well, it’s the weekend, which of course turns one’s thoughts to Movie Hosts and B-Movies. I like to let people who are into these types of shows know what flicks are being shown this week. Elvira’s Movie Macabre, which to remind people, features recently-made episodes, not reruns of her 1980’s run with the show, is presenting the original Night of the Living Dead. As always, part of the fun with this flick is the way special effects have definitely passed it by, and another part of the fun is Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE – IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU WHAT WILL HORSES DO?

I’ve gotten e-mails requesting that I review this movie but I already did, last year. It’s been on my Bad Movie page but to make it easier to find (and to remind people that I have a Bad Movie page since I’ve been so busy on other subjects lately) here it is: For more Bad Movie reviews click here:  https://glitternight.com/bad-movies/

if footmen posterIF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971) – Category: A neglected bad movie classic that deserves a Plan 9-sized cult following    No, it’s not about Quentin Tarantino and pre-Castro Havana nightclubs (Thank you, I’m here all week!) it’s really a Cold War-era warning about what would happen if Communists took over the United States. It’s from Continue reading

AMANDA BLAKE INTERVIEWS SANNION, AUTHOR OF THE SOON-TO-BE-RELEASED BOOK “ECSTATIC”

…And that’s Amanda Sioux Blake, not the Amanda Blake who played Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke. (I know. I’m weird.) Sannion is a fellow blogger here at WordPress and his book devoted to the god Dionysos is coming out. Sannion’s writings on these topics are always fascinating because he writes with a great deal of passion since they are part of his lifestyle. You can get the feel for the book’s content and learn how to buy a copy!

THE TOP 12 DEITIES FROM INUIT MYTHOLOGY

Inuit mythology is almost criminally neglected. Personally I find it  fascinating and there is a  wealth of underappreciated information to be passed along. Inuit is the term used now, largely replacing  ”eskimo”  which was a pejorative term coined by the Algonquin Indians long ago. The geographical area of the Inuit myths ranges from Siberia across the Bering Strait through Alaska, Canada and Greenland. Names used for the following deities vary across that vast area. Some Inuit settlements like Ayaatayat (near present- day Cape Denbigh) date back 10,000 years. The Inuit were often at war with various Native American tribes and, as a testament to the  fighting  ability of the ancient Inuits they drove the Vikings themselves out of part of Greenland. The Inuit deities are as fascinating as the figures in any other pantheon. And for other  mythology articles I’ve written see the following links:

FORGOTTEN TELEVISION TREASURE: THE ALMIGHTY JOHNSONS (2011- ?)

THE ALMIGHTY JOHNSONS – With the popularity of the movie Thor I want to help spread the word about this New Zealand program that debuted in February of this year. This treasure is not so much forgotten as it is simply unknown here in the states but I want to change that since it has “cult hit” written all over it, and because it has nothing to do with vampires, unlike 68% of the new shows lately.

The Almighty Johnsons is about a Continue reading

ONE LAST ROUND OF CONGRATULATIONS FOR THIS YEAR’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS

With the College World Series’ over now in all the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers let’s offer a final round of congratulations to this year’s champions. In a way it was The Year of the Eagle since that nickname (one of the most monotonously overused in college sports) is sported by no less than three of the title winners. On the other end of the spectrum the Harvesters have the most unique nickname among this year’s winners so that’s why their logo is featured. Here are the World Series champions in the order in which I began covering their division.

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Continue reading

BUCKSHOT BRYANT JOINS THE FRONTIERADO VALHALLA

Just yesterday I completed Jo Bryant’s Saga for her Frontierado character, Buckshot Bryant. Jo has been kind enough to post it at her blog with some very clever Wanted posters that she set up! Here is the link – and remember – if you Continue reading

WOLFMAN MAC AND ELVIRA TONIGHT

Today instead of looking at a movie host of the past we’ll look at two who are still active. First up is the one and only Wolfman Mac, seen in the photo with his friend Boney Bob. Wolfman Mac hosts Chiller Drive-In, on which he shows the usual beloved B-movies of the past in the time-honored movie host tradition. Mac’s schtick is that a stereotypical pitchfork and torch-bearing mob once chased him into a haunted old drive-in where he met Boney Bob and began showing old, campy movies. Wolfman Mac’s show airs Saturday nights at 10pm on the cable channel called RetroTV. Tonight’s movie is Continue reading

CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY FOR THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES’ IN THE NAIA, NCAA DIVISION 2 AND JUCO

NAIA – The NAIA World Series Championship game went on until about 1am here on the east coast, so technically they get to be part of Championship Saturday, too. The Concordia (CA) Eagles led the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals by a score of 4-3 going into the 9th inning. The Eagles added 5 more runs in the top of the 9th then shut out the Chaparrals in the bottom of the 9th to take the title.
