DOCTOR MENSANA: AUSTRALIAN SUPERHERO

One of Balladeer’s Blog’s biggest hits of 2015 was my examination of Australian-made comic book heroes like Dark Nebula, Vixen, Crimson Comet, Niteside and the super-team called the Southern Squadron. Here’s another, and for my full look at Aussie super-types click HERE

Doctor Mensana

Dr Mensana in one of his two super-powered forms.

DOCTOR MENSANA

Debut Year: 1941

Secret Identity: None. He openly used his real name, but the public often tagged him with nicknames like “the Samson of science” or “the man of Mind Plus.”

Origin: Sporting both an MD and a PhD the good Doctor Mensana used his unrivaled genius to create pills which could make him super-strong AND endow him with telepathic powers in addition to even greater intelligence than he already possessed.

Powers: When our hero swallowed one of his M-Plus (M+) or Mind-Plus pills his already formidable brilliance was multiplied many times over. His cranium would grow and he would also boast telepathic and psionic powers. When Dr Mensana swallowed one of his S-Plus (S+) or Strength-Plus pills he would instantly bulk up with muscles and possess incredible super-strength. Continue reading

Superheroes are everywhere these days! Wonder what all this is about? FOR PART ONE CLICK  HERE

Foolkiller (Greg Salinger) delivers some vigilante justice to a Maggia-run nightclub in Miami. In the process he tangles with another obscure Marvel Comics supervillain.

The Foolkiller name is based on the figure from 19th Century American folklore.

The Maggia is the Marvel Comics Universe’s pastiche of the Mafia.

*** ADULT THEMES AND VIOLENCE ***

We’re up to issue number three of the Foolkiller solo series.  Continue reading

Now in his own series Foolkiller (Greg Salinger) can at last get down to some serious vigilante mayhem tinged with a little “Rorschach before Rorschach existed” philosophizing AND his own peculiar brand of madness.

In this very first issue Foolkiller takes on a physician who abuses his public trust by using some of the patients in his insane asylum as human guinea pigs for macabre experiments.   Continue reading

Our anti-hero Foolkiller (Greg Salinger) ends his run with the dynamic non-team called the Defenders this time around. Valkyrie’s vendetta against the Mandrill is center-stage as is that mutant villain’s vendetta against the Defenders, Daredevil and his own parents.

The lives of millions of innocent people are at risk in addition to the Mandrill’s actual targets. One last reminder that, though Foolkiller’s awkward moniker may put off some readers, it’s based on the figure from 19th Century American folklore.  Continue reading

My alternate treatment of Foolkiller (Greg Salinger) in The Defenders # 90 will deal with the funeral of Hellcat’s (Patsy Walker’s) mother and with Daredevil rejoining the Defenders since Matt Murdock is now part of Nighthawk’s (Kyle Richmond’s) legal defense team. The Mandrill and Fem-Force strike again as part of that mutant villain’s plan to revenge himself upon the Defenders, Daredevil and his own parents: everyone he blames for his setbacks.  Continue reading

It’s Marvel Comics’ world these days s0 Balladeer’s Blog’s “Script Doctoring” of Marvel’s handling of Foolkiller continues with Part Fifteen.

This time around in my alternate universe the controversial Foolkiller did for sales of The Defenders what the controversial Wolverine did for sales of The X-Men. That being the case The Defenders at long last got a second edition of Defenders Annual. Fans of the dynamic non-team will remember that Defenders Annual # 1 featured World Gone Sane, the conclusion of the epic length Nebulon/Headmen storyline.

Defenders Annual # 2, here in my treatment, would feature the Defenders (Hulk, Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Hellcat and Foolkiller (Greg Salinger) getting reunited with the Red Guardian to help her thwart the latest world-conquering scheme of the Defenders’ foe known as the Presence. Continue reading

This time around I rewrite The Defenders # 89 and bring to a conclusion this tale about the secrets behind Foolkiller’s costume and his Purification Gun.

Our hero and his fellow Defenders try to save countless universes from Thog the Netherspawn.

Some of you have commented on how awkward you find the nom de guerre “Foolkiller” but since the name was based on the figure from 19th Century American folklore, it won’t be altered.

This time around I rewrite all of The Defenders # 88 and provide several answers regarding the mysteries surrounding Foolkiller (Greg Salinger) and surrounding the dangerous fanatics of the Tribunal.  Continue reading

FOOLKILLER 12: INQUEST

Foolkiller holding, then aiming his gunWith superhero movies dominating pop culture these days Balladeer’s Blog’s “Script Doctoring” of Marvel’s handling of Foolkiller continues with Part Twelve.

FOR PART ONE OF THIS ARTICLE CLICK  HERE

In this installment I rewrite The Defenders # 87. After many teasers regarding the secrets behind Foolkiller’s Purification Gun and the unusual fabric of his costume I start revealing the answers.

I also revise the whole premise behind the Tribunal running the Inquest since, ultimately, even the apocalyptic revelations of the Elf With A Handgun were dismissed as a “hoax” by Dr Strange. And some of you have commented on how awkward you find the nom de guerre “Foolkiller” but since the name was based on the figure from 19th Century American folklore, it won’t be altered.    Continue reading
