WNBA RESULTS: JUNE 22ND TO 24TH

The SAN ANTONIO SILVER STARS (logo at left) were at 4-4 headed into last night’s road game against the SEATTLE STORM. The Storm were riding a 2-game winning streak, one of which was a toppling of WNBA defending champs the MINNESOTA LYNX, ending their 10-0 run to start the season.

Seattle withstood a furious 4th quarter rally by the Silver Stars and won 82-76. Tanisha Wright led the Storm to their 3rd straight win with Continue reading

WNBA RESULTS JUNE 18TH TO 21ST *UPDATED*

The WNBA season’s only undefeated team suffered its first loss and the only winless team notched their first victory on the same day! The Seattle Storm (logo at left) ended the 10-0 run of the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 65-62 nailbiter.

Meanwhile the 0-9 Tulsa Shock won an 87-75 home stand against the Phoenix Mercury to at last log a win for the season. The Shock’s next game will be Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Sparks, who last night utterly demolished the visiting Washington Mystics in a 101-70 embarrassment.

Keep checking back here at Balladeer’s Blog throughout the week for updated results plus the latest standings.

WNBA RESULTS: JUNE 15TH – 17TH

A BRAND NEW RECORD – So far the MINNESOTA LYNX have owned this WNBA season. They’re the defending champions, they’re the only remaining undefeated team this year and last night they took sole possession of the longest season- opening winning streak in the Association’s history! The Lynx moved to 10-0, breaking the 9-0 tie they held with the 2001 and 2003 LOS ANGELES SPARKS. Minnesota slapped around the homestanding PHOENIX MERCURY in a 78-60 victory that will live on in the history books.

A FIZZLE FROM THE SPARKS – And speaking of the Sparks, they laid an uncharacteristic egg with a 92-59 butt kicking at the hands of the ATLANTA DREAM. Angel McCoughtry, the undisputed leader of the Dream, went Medieval on the Sparks, chalking up 31 points on her own. Atlanta improved to Continue reading

44 NAIA COLLEGE BASEBALL PLAYERS TAKEN IN 2012 MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT

It’s once again time for Balladeer’s Blog’s annual ritual of listing NAIA college baseball players taken in the MLB draft. The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds (logo at left) are among the teams who had players drafted.

An added perk (?) of being covered here is the assignment of Official Balladeer’s Blog Nicknames, the kind of nicknames nobody has ever used for these players (or will again) to the best of my knowledge. THE BEST IS THE LAST ON THE LIST

LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES – Kris “Kids In The” Hall – to the A’s  ***  Patrick “Machine Gun” Merkling – to the Marlins  ***  “Volatile” Vincent Spilker – to the Diamondbacks  ***  Andy “Whatchoo Talkin’ ‘Bout” Hillis – to the Cardinals  ***  Jorge “The Blue Jay” Saez – to the Blue Jays

OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY STARS – Dane “The Screwdriver” Phillips – to the Padres  ***  “Fillibuster” Blake Schwarz – to the Nationals  ***  “Manta” Miguel Beltran – to the Rays  ***  Chad “Bizet’s” Carman – to the Phillies  ***

WNBA RESULTS: WEEK OF JUNE 10TH * UPDATED WITH JUNE 13TH’S SCORES

Right now in the WNBA it’s the Minnesota Lynx’s world and everyone else is just part of their win column it seems. The Lynx are the defending champions of the Association (I feel like Jim Rome when I say that), are the only undefeated team remaining this season AND they just tied the 2001 and 2003 Los Angeles Sparks for the best season-starting win streak at 9-0.

The basketball gods must love drama because we’ll have a whole week of buildup before Minnesota plays its next game this Friday night at the Phoenix Mercury. A win there will naturally give the 2012 Lynx sole possession of a new record for consecutive wins to start the season. Meanwhile this post will serve as a sort of “thread” for WNBA score updates throughout the week.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13TH SCORES – Chicago Sky (7-1, won 6 in a row) over the Continue reading

WOMEN’S SPORTS FANS REJOICE: THE WNBA IS NOW AT BALLADEER’S BLOG

I’ve always felt the Women’s National Basketball Association deserves more attention than it tends to get. Since the bulk of their season corresponds to the summer months when there are no college sports being played I decided they would be a perfect fit for Balladeer’s Blog.

If there is enough interest in these posts I’ll continue my WNBA coverage. First off, a look at the current standings and a shoutout to the Minnesota Lynx, who are the sole remaining undefeated team this season.

WESTERN CONFERENCE – 1. Minnesota Lynx  7-0  ***  2. Los Angeles Sparks  5-1  ***  3. San Continue reading

The final score was 10-6 but the Hillcats were leading 6-5 as late as the 8th inning. It’s the first national championship for TWC. Meanwhile, RSU made quite an impression on their first trip to the World Series.

The remaining 3 divisions of college sports covered here at Balladeer’s Blog play their World Series championship games today. The NCAA Division 2 game will be played at 7pm ET and pits the Delta State University Statesmen against the West Chester Golden Rams. The NJCAA1 game throws out its first pitch at 9pm ET and finds the storied Iowa Western Reivers taking on the San Jacinto College Gators. The Cinderella team, the 9th-seeded Rogers State University Hillcats never met a team they didn’t upset in their 1st year making it all the way to the NAIA World Series. Their opponents will be the 4th-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan College Bulldogs who last night pulled off some upset magic of their own by toppling the top seeds in the Series, the LSU-Shreveport Pilots.

The NAIA’s championship game gets underway at 9:30pm ET. Keep checking back here at Balladeer’s Blog for results in that game plus College World Series results in the NJCAA and NCAA Division 2 as well.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES RESULTS FOR MAY 31ST: NAIA, D2 AND NJCAA

The Marietta College Pioneers (logo at left) repeated as NCAA Division 3 World Series champions, as reported here at Balladeer’s Blog yesterday afternoon. The Pioneers did it with a flourish, too, casually dusting the St Thomas University Tommies, the only team that had beaten them so far in this year’s Series, by a score of 6-0. Then they pounded the Wheaton (MA) Lyons 7-2 proving that the Lyons (yes, with a “y”) taking them into extra innings a few days ago was just a fluke.

Today the World Series’ continue in the NAIA, D2 and NJCAA. The NAIA’s LSU- Shreveport Pilots (riverboat pilots) clash with the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs for the right to face the Cinderella Rogers State University Hillcats, in tomorrow’s championship game. Keep checking back for updated scores as they become available.
