It’s the most wonderful tiiiiime of the yeeeeeeaaar! College Football 2017 is underway in the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog. With even more action on the way Saturday let’s take a look at last night’s results!
*** HEADLINES ***
TIGHTEST GAME OF THE NIGHT – The game between the HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES and their hosts, the DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS was a true Gridiron Armageddon. The 1st Quarter ended with the Conquistadors holding a 12-7 lead, but by Halftime the Scotties had cut that to an even tighter 12-10 score.
In the 3rd Quarter Highland College went on top 19-15 then outscored Dodge City College 7-6 in the 4th to win the game 26-21. Scotties QB Kyle Kearns threw for 2 Touchdowns while RB Kevin Brown added another on the ground.
UPSET IN THE TOP TWENTY – The second edition of the Ag Bowl (as in ag-riculture) saw the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS do battle with the number 17 team in the nation – the DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS (should be Blue Tigers).
A 7-7 tie to end the 1st Quarter turned into a 28-21 advantage for the Trojans after an action-packed 2nd Quarter of play. After the break Dakota State expanded their lead over the Tigers to 42-33 in the 3rd before going on to win it 56-39. Trojans QB Jacob Giles went FORTY of FORTY-EIGHT for FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY-TWO YARDS!
*** NAIA ***
BLUE GRASS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY! – In the Blue Grass State of Kentucky the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS hosted their in-state rivals the UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS. The Tigers seized a 7-0 edge in the opening Quarter and then stayed on top of the Bears from there.
At Halftime the Campbellsville University lead stood at 14-7, and by the end of the 3rd they led the University of Pikeville by a count of 28-14. The 4th Quarter belonged to the defenses, so 28-14 was also the final score. Tigers QB Hunter Brown threw for 383 yds and 3 Touchdowns.
HOME STAND – The 15th ranked DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS took the field against the visiting ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS. Those Battlin’ Bears managed a 6-0 lead to end the 1st Quarter but the Blue Hawks soared past them in the 2nd for a 14-6 Halftime advantage.
Dickinson State got more and more separation from there, leading Rocky Mountain College 27-14 to end the 3rd Quarter and winning the game 43-28. Hayden Gibson, Quarterback for the Blue Hawks, went 17 of 23 for 238 yards and FOUR Touchdowns.
PATRIOTISM BEATS ARISTOCRATIC AIRS – This game pitted the UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS against the WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS. The Patriots started out with a very workmanlike 3-0 edge over the visiting Royals and by the break they had extended that to 13-0.
In the 3rd Quarter Warner University finally got on the board to make it a 13-7 contest but the University of the Cumberlands shut them out from there while adding 10 more points of their own. The final tally in this game was Patriots 23 Royals 7. RB’s Austin Hatfield and Kevin Claussen each ran in a TD for the victors.
NUMBER NINE WINS BIG – The nation’s 9th ranked GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS welcomed the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS. This was a tale of two Halves. The Crusaders scored a Touchdown on 4th and Goal for a 7-0 lead but the Vikings tied the score on their next possession.
A 13-10 Halftime edge for Grand View University was very deceptive. Very early in the 2nd Half the Vikings grabbed a 20-10 advantage and kept piling on the points from there. Evangel University would muster just one more TD the rest of the way. GVU emerged with a 37-17 triumph, with WR Alex Brammer receiving for 186 yds and 2 Touchdowns.
*** NJCAA ***
DEFENDING CHAMPS ROLL – The (3) GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS – the Defending National Champions of NJCAA Football, took on the visiting ELLSWORTH COLLEGE PANTHERS.
It took a while for the Broncbusters to get their offense in synch, so by Halftime they held a mere 8-7 edge. That turned into a 24-7 lead over the Panthers to end the 3rd Quarter, and ultimately became a 31-7 victory for Garden City College. Broncbuster Quarterback Terry Wilson had 175 yards through the air, with 2 Touchdowns.
BULLDOG ON BULLDOG VIOLENCE – A rare Opening Day clash between Top Ten teams was on the menu in Milledgeville, GA as the 7th ranked NAVARRO COLLEGE BULLDOGS visited the number 8 GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS. Navarro College managed a pair of Field Goals in the 1st Quarter to take a 6-0 lead.
Over the next 3 Quarters the Navarro squad would score an additional 17 points, while their defense kept Georgia Military College off the scoreboard until there were just 2 minutes left in the game. GMC mustered a Garbage Time Touchdown to make the final score 23-7.
Nobody cares about these teams.
