Another Balladeer’s Blog Top Twenty list for 2020. This time it’s 20 more cool-named teams from the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). FOR THE FIRST TWENTY NJCAA TEAMS CLICK HERE
VANCE-GRANVILLE COLLEGE VANGUARDS
Location: Henderson, NC
Comment: Kudos to the folks at this institution for showing some creativity with the name of their sports teams! The Vanguards definitely stand out and their logo is very, very eye-catching!
QUINSIGAMOND COLLEGE WYVERNS
Location: Worcester, MA
Comment: Quinsigamond is a mouthful, no doubt about it, and when you combine that memorable school name with the memorable team name Wyverns you have got the kind of magic that Balladeer’s Blog loves!
FAULKNER STATE SUN CHIEFS
Location: Bay Minette, AL
Comment: With a nickname as cool as Sun Chiefs and with a logo that is as eye-catching as this one I can only hope that this college adds football at some point in the future.
CHESAPEAKE COLLEGE SKIPJACKS
Location: Wye Mills, MD
Comment: Don’t call them the Flapjacks. Don’t call them the Blackjacks. They are the Skipjacks, one of the most strikingly unique team names in any division of college sports. The Chesapeake College teams take their name from the sloop-rigged sailboat, not the tuna.
EASTFIELD COLLEGE HARVESTERS
Location: Mesquite, TX
Comment: The Eastfield Harvesters are so cool word is that Clint Eastwood is changing his last name to Eastfield. (I’m kidding – he’s changing his FIRST name to Eastfield)
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AT SUMTER FIRE ANTS
Location: Sumter, SC
Comment: In a college sports world littered with far too many teams called Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs and Wildcats it’s always a pleasure to find teams that have a certain flair and originality.
YAVAPAI COLLEGE ROUGHRIDERS
Location: Prescott, AZ
Comment: The name Roughriders always conjures up images of Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders from the Spanish-American War of 1898.
HOSTOS COLLEGE CAIMANS
Location: Bronx, NY
Comment: The college sports teams so awesome they named islands after them! Just kidding. The Caiman Islands were – like the Hostos College sports teams – named after the amphibious carnivores.
GILLETTE COLLEGE PRONGHORNS
Location: Gillette, WY
Comment: I’ve always had a fondness for the oddly-named animals called Pronghorns. Those suckers can run at speeds over 53 miles per hour.
GATEWAY COLLEGE GECKOS
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Comment: They’re badder than Gordon Gecko! They’re cooler than the Geico Gecko! They’re more quintissentially American than the Gateway City! They are the one and only Gateway College Geckos!
MONROE COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRIBUNES
Location: Rochester, NY
Comment: Obviously the Tribunes are named after the famous Roman Tribunes of long ago. What’s not obvious is why more schools don’t use such a cool name for their sports teams.
BRISTOL COLLEGE BAYHAWKS
Location: Fall River, MA
Comment: You almost can’t go wrong with any team name that adds the word “hawks” at the end.
RAINY RIVER COLLEGE VOYAGEURS
Location: International Falls, MN
Comment: This institution’s motto should be “Don’t call your sports teams something boring like Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs or Wildcats … call them something cool like Voyageurs!”
WAYCROSS COLLEGE SWAMP FOXES
Location: Waycross, GA
Comment: This name takes the whole concept of cool-named sports teams to the next level! Everyone loves the Swamp Fox aka Francis Marion, a hero of the Revolutionary War.
SAINT CLAIR COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE SKIPPERS
Location: Port Huron, MI
Comment: You can insert your own Gilligan’s Island comment if you like, but I find the nickname Skippers to be very appealing and original.
GALVESTON COLLEGE WHITECAPS
Location: Galveston, TX
Comment: As always I’m a sucker for teams whose names reflect the character and history of their region and Whitecaps qualifies on multiple levels.
NORTHWEST COLLEGE TRAPPERS
Location: Powell, WY
Comment: The Trappers sports teams often live up to the butt-kicking coolness of their name and are respected by all opponents.
MONROE COLLEGE AT THE BRONX EXPRESS
Location: Bronx, NY
Comment: Balladeer’s Blog loves team names that capture the feel of their locale in addition to being cool. The Express meets both sets of criteria.
BISMARK STATE MYSTICS
Location: Bismarck, ND
Comment: Now THIS is what I’m talking about! With this institution’s teams you can tie in Otto Von Bismarck, Harry Potter or any other fictional magicians you prefer to use.
CORNING COLLEGE RED BARONS
Location: Corning, NY
Comment: With their cool name and impressive athletic abilities, the Corning College teams leave many an opponent screaming “Curse you, Red Barons!” in vintage Snoopy style.

These are such a great collection of names! You really hate eagles tigers bulldogs and wildcats don’t you?
I don’t hate them, it’s just that I’m bored with the overabundance of them.
