The college basketball postseason rolls along:
USCAA DIVISION TWO
DAY ONE: GAME ONE – The 6 seeds – the VERMONT TECH GREEN KNIGHTS – took the court against the 3rd seeded UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI AT CLERMONT COUGARS. This shootout found the Green Knights on top of the favored Cougars 50-39 by Halftime. From there Vermont Tech held off their opponents for a Century Club-level 108-100 Upset win. Drake Perry’s THIRTY points led the Green Knights.
DAY ONE: GAME TWO – In this game the 4th seeded NEW HAMPSHIRE TECHNICAL INSTITUTE LYNX faced the 5 seeds – the PENN STATE AT MONT ALTO LIONS. In businesslike fashion the Lynx led 32-27 at the Half on their way to a 76-70 victory over the Lions. Shaquille Barrett led the way for New Hampshire Tech with 18 points.
DAY ONE: GAME THREE – The 8 seeds – the SOUTHERN MAINE COLLEGE SEAWOLVES – tangled with the 9th seeded PENN STATE AT WILKES-BARRE LIONS. This Instant Classic saw the Seawolves holding a mere 37-36 edge at the break before eking out a tiny bit more separation from there to win out 70-68. ROUND ONE: GAME ONE – The 6 seeds – the OZARK CHRISTIAN COLLEGE AMBASSADORS – faced the 3rd seeded RHEMA BIBLE COLLEGE EAGLES. The Ambassadors made it clear they were in it to win it with their 50-36 Halftime lead which wound up as a 93-87 Upset victory. Parker Sutton’s 21 points led Ozark Christian College while teammate Brett Campbell notched a Double-Double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
ROUND ONE: GAME TWO – The 7th seeded KANSAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE FALCONS took on the 10 seeds – the FREE LUTHERAN BIBLE COLLEGE CONQUERORS. The Falcons were manhandling the Conquerors 48-21 at the Half, then coasted from there to an 87-56 blowout win. Jouvens Hyacinthe and Stephone Jackson led Kansas Christian College with 14 points each.
GOLDEN STATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: FIRST SEMIFINAL – The 4 seeds – the ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM – took on the top seeded WESTMONT COLLEGE WARRIORS (should be the Guardians). The Firestorm put the Warriors on Upset Alert by Halftime with a 50-41 advantage, then carried through, winning by a Century Club-level score of 102-86. De’Ron Kyle put up 29 points to lead Arizona Christian University.
GOLDEN STATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: SECOND SEMIFINAL – In this game the 6th seeded HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS clashed with the 3 seeds – the MENLO COLLEGE OAKS. The Oaks were on top 37-28 at the Half but after the break the underdog Royals came roaring back for a 77-72 comeback victory. Michael Fry’s 17 points led the way for Hope International.
MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE: PLAY-IN GAME – The 9 seeds – the LIFE UNIVERSITY RUNNING EAGLES – played the 8th seeded CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY PHOENIX for the right to advance. The Running Eagles were on top 37-31 by the midpoint, then held off the Phoenix to win the game 69-65. Life University (not affiliated with the School of Hard Knocks) was led by 20 points from Antwan Maxwell.
CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The last teams standing in this tournament were the top seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF ANTELOPE VALLEY PIONEERS – and the 2nd seeded UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT MERCED GOLDEN BOBCATS. The Pioneers (should be the Antelopes) had doubled-up on the Golden Bobcats by Halftime, leading them 46-23. UAV stayed on top the rest of the way for an 84-66 victory led by Ronnie Rousseau III’s 25 points. * THE PIONEERS ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT *
CASCADE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – This title tilt pitted the top-seeded COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES against the 3 seeds – the OREGON TECH HUSTLIN’ OWLS. The Coyotes were out in front 44-36 at the Half, then held on against the never-say-die Hustlin’ Owls to win it 82-77. Talon Pinckney led the way for the College of Idaho with 23 points. * THE COYOTES ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE CASCADE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT *
THE SUN CONFERENCE: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The top seeds – the SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FIRE – took on the 3rd seeded SAINT THOMAS UNIVERSITY BOBCATS (should be the Tomcats). The Fire were on top 34-25 at Halftime only to see the Bobcats charge back, forcing Overtime with a 68-68 tie. In the extra session Southeastern U won the game 78-73. Riley Minx notched THIRTY-ONE points to lead the victors. * THE FIRE ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE SUN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT *
NORTH STAR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The 2nd seeded MAYVILLE STATE COMETS faced the Cinderella 5 seeds – the WALDORF UNIVERSITY WARRIORS. By the Half the Comets had taken a 30-24 advantage but had to hold on tight from there against a furious Warriors rally. Mayville State won it 65-62 led by 22 points from Demitrius Martin. * THE COMETS ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE NSAA TOURNAMENT *
MID-ATLANTIC DISTRICT: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The SANDHILLS COLLEGE FLYERS clashed with the ANNE ARUNDEL COLLEGE RIVERHAWKS. The Flyers led the Riverhawks 40-36 at the midpoint. The explosive 2nd Half ended with Sandhills College winning by a Century Club-level score of 108-92. Sayaun Dent tossed in 18 points to lead the Flyers. * THE FLYERS ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE MID-ATLANTIC DISTRICT TOURNAMENT *
SECOND SEMIFINAL – In this game the 5th seeded WALDORF UNIVERSITY WARRIORS clashed with the top seeds – the BELLEVUE UNIVERSITY BRUINS. The Bruins held a 34-31 edge at the Half, but the Warriors came from behind to win the game 68-66. Demitrius Martin tossed in 27 points to lead Waldorf University in this Upset.
REGION 303: FIRST SEMIFINAL – The 3 seeds – the HERKIMER COLLEGE GENERALS – took the court against the 2nd seeded ONONDAGA COLLEGE LAZERS. The Generals were all over the Lazers, leading 35-20 at the break on their way to a 68-48 smackdown victory. Shykell Brown’s 21 points led Herkimer College.
MIDEAST REGION – The 2 seeds – the JOHNSON UNIVERSITY (FL) ROYALS – knocked off the 7th seeded BOYCE COLLEGE BULLDOGS 75-62 in this 1st Round game. (The 1 seed has a Bye in this round.) ### Meanwhile the (3) GREAT LAKES CHRISTIAN COLLEGE CRUSADERS edged the (6) WELCH COLLEGE FLAMES in a 72-71 Instant Classic ### And the (4) SIMMONS COLLEGE OF KENTUCKY FALCONS defeated the (5) CU-HARRODSBURG TIGERS 69-65.
NORTH REGION – The 5th seeded MARANATHA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY SABERCATS toppled the 4 seeds – Canada’s PROVIDENCE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE PILOTS by a score of 94-82 ### The (6) TRINITY BIBLE COLLEGE LIONS kept the Upsets coming with a 108-103 Overtime win over the (3) CENTRAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE OF THE BIBLE SAINTS ### And the (2) CALVARY UNIVERSITY WARRIORS crushed the (7) OAK HILLS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE WOLFPACK 87-49.
NUMBER ONE COMES BACK – The (1West) INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST GRENADIERS took on the (4East) OHIO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY TRAILBLAZERS. The Grenadiers were chasing the Trailblazers 41-36 at Halftime but came roaring back after the break for a 93-78 victory. Twenty-seven points from David Burton led IUS.
EAST OVER WEST – In the RSC’s unique tourney format the (2East) INDIANA UNIVERSITY EAST RED WOLVES faced the (3West) MIDWAY UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Admirals). The Red Wolves were on top 45-39 at the midpoint, then floored it from there for a 97-78 win. Bishop Smith scored 29 points to lead IUE while teammate Jehu Lafeuillee notched a Double-Double of 21 points and 19 rebounds.
UPSET OF THE NIGHT – The 7 seeds – the BETHEL (IN) PILOTS (Riverboat Pilots) – tackled the 2nd seeded MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS yesterday. The Pilots had the Knights faithful worried with their 35-33 Halftime edge, then consummated the Upset with an 85-77 triumph. TreVion Crews’ 26 points led Bethel U.
ROUND ONE, GAME ONE – The 4th seeded AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES hosted the 5 seeds – the WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS. By Halftime the Gyrenes were in complete control with a 50-25 lead over the Royals. After the break Ave Maria University kept up the pressure, ultimately winning by a final tally of 89-67. Leo Behrend led the Gyrenes with a Double-Double of 26 points and 12 rebounds.
KNOCKING OFF NUMBER ONE – The CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS took it on the road to face the number 1 team in the nation – the GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS. (Have I mentioned there are way too many college sports teams called Tigers?) Campbellsville U put Georgetown on Upset Alert with a 49-44 Halftime edge then held on for a tight 94-92 victory. Taiveyhon Mason led CU with THIRTY-FIVE points.
OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The (16) MASTER’S UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS toppled the visiting (4) WESTMONT COLLEGE WARRIORS 80-75 ### Meanwhile the CENTRAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE OF KANSAS TIGERS (ahem) upset the (13) SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS 99-94 in Overtime ### And the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS used DOUBLE Overtime to defeat the (23) CLARKE UNIVERSITY PRIDE 104-102.
CENTURY CLUB – Teams scoring 100 points or more in Regulation: The (6) LSU-SHREVEPORT PILOTS (Riverboat Pilots) trounced the (8) LSU-ALEXANDRIA GENERALS 110-80 ### The (11) PROVIDENCE (MT) ARGONAUTS hammered the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS 117-86 ### The (17) ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM won 106-80 at the LIFE PACIFIC COLLEGE WARRIORS ### And the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS won 108-106 at the GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS.
