REEL WILD CINEMA: EPISODES FIVE-SEVEN

Balladeer’s Blog’s Forgotten Television feature previously provided background information on Reel Wild Cinema (1996-1997) and examined its first four episodes. Now it’s on to the fifth through seventh episodes.

THE RUNDOWN FOR EPISODE FIVE (May 19th, 1996)

Title: Sci-Fi Mutant Invasion

Truncated Films Shown:

godmonster of indian flatsGODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS (1973) – From the maker of Alabama’s Ghost comes this tale of toxic gasses from beneath the Earth spawning a mutated sheep monster which walks erect and looks a little like Mr. Snuffleupagas and Joe Camel. The video cover looks nothing like the creature.

Some of the weirdest corporate and political conspirators that you’ll ever see combine with oddball action, a funeral for a dog that isn’t dead and the lumbering title menace for one feverish flick. On the plus side there’s a lot of interesting Nevada scenery as backdrop for the bizarre storyline.  Continue reading

PHILIPPINE SUPERHEROES: SANDUGUAN

This weekend’s escapist, light-hearted superhero post from Balladeer’s Blog will look at a superteam from the Philippines – Sanduguan (Blood Oath), created by Gener Pedriña.

sanduguan

Before I examine the individual members of this team, here are some quick facts:

sanduguan againThe team name Sanduguan dates to the era of Filipino resistance to the Spanish colonial forces. Rebels would take an oath of blood to the cause. Sanduguan, the term for the oath ritual, has also been translated as One Blood and Blood Pact.

Sanduguan first appeared in February of 1999. The emergency which caused the gathering of individual superheroes who would found the team was the freeing of Siginarugan – a vile entity from Philippine mythology. The heroes defeated the menace and formed their team.

sandataSANDATA (Weapon)

Secret Identity: Jae Ener Pedriña

Debut Year: 1999

Origin: From a very young age, Jae’s grandfather educated him in Arnis, the Filipino martial arts discipline. As an adult he was declared so proficient that his grandfather gave him a pair of mystic bastons used in Arnis. After thwarting a robbery with the bastons Jae adopted the costumed identity of Sandata to fight crime.

Powers: This hero is the foremost master of Arnis techniques of fighting. His mystic bastons are virtually indestructible and occasionally manifest other aspects as needed.  Sandata is the leader of Sanduguan. Continue reading

AFRICAN MYTHOLOGY: THE EPIC OF AIWEL LONGAR

Balladeer’s Blog takes another look at a neglected epic myth, this one from Africa.

Aiwel LongarThe mythic tale of Aiwel Longar comes from the Dinka pantheon. Nhialic is the supreme deity to the Dinka and the first man and woman he created were Garang and Abuk. The Dinka people live in the Upper Nile in Sudan, as they have for centuries.

AIWEL LONGAR

I often cover the way in which cultures which come into contact borrow mythic material from each other to embellish their own respective belief systems. The story of Aiwel Longar clearly influenced (and vice versa) Egyptian, Jewish, Christian and Muslim myths. It also bears striking similarities to the Gnostic Hymn of the Pearl.

PART ONE – Born as simply Aiwel, this figure was a gift from the god of the Nile River to Aiwel’s widowed and childless mother. The infant already had a full set of teeth when his mother picked him up out of the Nile River, where the river god had set him adrift.

Like many mythic figures Aiwel could talk and function like an adult at a very young age. While still a toddler he often stole and drank entire gourds full of milk. After one such binge Aiwel’s mother caught him and the young demigod warned her not to tell anyone or else she would die.  Continue reading

REEL WILD CINEMA: EPISODES TWO-FOUR

Balladeer’s Blog’s Forgotten Television feature provided background information on Reel Wild Cinema (1996-1997) and examined its first episode last time around. This time I’ll take a look at episodes two to four.

THE RUNDOWN FOR EPISODE TWO (April 28th, 1996)

Title: Supernatural Sirens

Truncated Films Shown:

CURSE OF THE CRYING WOMAN (1963) – The Mexican horror film about La Llorona that got U.S. distribution and half-assed dubbing via K. Gordon Murray himself. I’ve reviewed this film in detail previously so for a quick recap for newbies to this flick it’s the old ghost story about an undead woman who sheds tears from her empty eye sockets while making with withering cries.

The Crying Woman has been searching for her dead children for hundreds of years and this version of the legend added a trio of leashed, ghostly hounds to accompany her on her nocturnal hunts. Death comes to all who cross her path.

THE NAKED WITCH (1961) – For starters, this is the Larry Buchanan film, NOT the Andy Milligan Naked Witch movie from a different year. As usual for Buchanan this was filmed in Texas, and is yet another variation of the tale about a witch who gets put to death but returns a century or more later to slay all the descendants of her killers.

Viewers get a reasonably attractive woman in the lead role. She’s never naked no matter what the title says, but she does do a weird dance when not killing her victims. And that’s just part of the unintentional laughs contained in this infamous piece of schlock.  Continue reading

NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS ROUNDUP: NOV TWENTIETH

Time for another current events roundup from Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog

PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT AT LAST INTERVENES TO STOP DEMOCRAT BOB CASEY’S MACHINE FROM COUNTING ILLEGAL BALLOTS IN ORDER TO REVERSE THE LOSS OF HIS SENATE SEAT.

PRESIDENT TRUMP’S RNC HEAD DISCUSSES THE BATTLE TO STOP THE BOB CASEY ANTICS IN PENNSYLVANIA. I’m happy to admit I was wrong about the RNC failing to take effective action in this case. The goal was to stop PA Democrats from trying this type of vote fraud ever again, especially after the forever-tainted 2020 election. Further proof – as if more were needed – that Democrat vote fraud that year installed Joe Biden in the White House.

RNC CHAIR MICHAEL WHATLEY ON FURTHER STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO PROTECT ELECTION INTEGRITY. Reigning in the Democrat tactic of finding “uncounted” (LMAO) votes several days after election day is certainly a must.

JOE SCARBOROUGH AND MIKA BRZEZINSKI CRAWL TO MAR-A-LAGO TO GET FORGIVENESS FROM TRUMP. He has more patience than I would have had with those two serial liars who compared him to Hitler on a regular basis. The man is open to conversations with almost anybody

TRUMP’S DESIRED AG PUBLICLY SHAMES DEMOCRAT NANCY PELOSI AND REPUBLICAN MITCH MCCONNELL FOR INSIDER TRADING AND OTHER SCANDALS. Call it a stunt if you like, but it’s the kind of wake-up call that America’s cesspool of political corruption NEEDS.

SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT OF AMERICAN INDIANS VOTED FOR TRUMP. His first term policies were very good for them!

THE BLACK HOLE OF CORRUPTION AT THE PENTAGON CONTINUES AS IT FAILS SEVENTH AUDIT IN A ROW. Have I mentioned what a cesspool of corruption America’s political system has been for decades? Continue reading

BATTLE OF THE JAPAN SEA (1969) MOVIE REVIEW

battle of the japan seaBATTLE OF THE JAPAN SEA (1969) – Japan’s Toshiro Mifune led the cast of this Japanese film about their successful naval clashes with Russia during the often-forgotten Russo-Japanese War (February 1904 – September 1905). U.S. servicemen stationed in Japan played the Russians.

Fans of Reilly, Ace of Spies may remember that the Japanese attack on Port Arthur in 1904 was at the core of that program’s second episode.

Other footnotes that might excite interest in this film for people who aren’t familiar with the Russo-Japanese War – President Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the peace between the two nations to end the war; one of the staff officers who accompanied Roosevelt on that venture was a young Douglas MacArthur; and Tsarist Russia’s humiliating loss in the war helped fuel the ultimately unsuccessful communist uprising in 1905.

toshiro and othersOn to the film itself. Battle of the Japan Sea employs the approach that moviegoers will recall from The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, Midway, even Inchon and others, by having an all-star cast (in the Far East) act out set pieces throughout the scattered fighting.
