POLO: ORCHARD HILL WINS THE U.S. OPEN

Orchard Hill

The victorious Orchard Hill team: Steve Van Andel, Facundo Pieres, Julian de Lusarreto and Juan Martin Nero.

Balladeer’s Blog continues its coverage of the world’s OLDEST team sport – Polo. The 112th U.S. Open has wrapped up at the International Polo Club in Palm Beach.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Orchard Hill – the Clubmen as they’re known to readers of Balladeer’s Blog – took on the Dubai Gushers for the 2016 title. In the First Chukker the Clubmen took a quick 1-0 lead off a Facundo Pieres goal just 30 seconds in. As is often the case the Polo Grounds were fecund with Facundos and soon the Gushers tied the score at 1-1 when Facundo Sola swatted in a goal from the field and later made a 40-yard penalty shot for a 2-1 Dubai lead. Adolfo Cambiaso made it 3-1 to end the opening Chukker.

Scoring in the Second Chukker got started with a 30-yard penalty shot from Pieres to make the score 3-2. Rashid Albwardy put the Gushers up 4-2 with a goal from the field but Pieres pulled Orchard Hill to within a goal with less than a minute left, ending the Chukker with a score of 4-3.

International Polo ClubJulian de Lusarreta managed the first goal of the Third Chukker, tying things up at 4-4 and his teammate Juan Martin Nero went on to put the Clubmen on top 5 goals to 4 with a shot rocketed in from ONE HUNDRED YARDS OUT! Facundo Pieres notched a pair of penalty shots later in the Chukker for a 7-4 Orchard Hill advantage but Cambiaso scored the lone goal for Dubai in the Chukker, making the score 7-5 in favor of the Clubmen going into Halftime.     Continue reading →

WAVELENGTH (1983): MICRO-REVIEW

WavelengthWAVELENGTH (1983) – This is an unjustly neglected science fiction film that stars Robert Carradine, Cherie Currie and Keenan Wynn in a very unconventional love triangle: both Carradine and Currie are fighting over Wynn. (I’m kidding!)

Robert Carradine plays a moody musician suffering a career lull, Cherie Currie portrays a groupie who becomes a bona fide romantic partner for him and Keenan Wynn barks and snarls in his usual “grouch with a heart of gold” manner. Cherie’s sensitive mind is open to alien brain-waves calling to her from a nearby (seemingly) abandoned government installation. Carradine and his neighbor Wynn help her try to find out what’s going on. Continue reading →

PRINCE DIES AT AGE FIFTY-SEVEN

Prince Dirty MindThe singer and musician Prince is dead. Since I like to be different I figured I would post a pic of his work titled Dirty Mind instead of the bigger hits that everyone else is featuring.

And yes, if you’re new to Dirty Mind the song When You Were Mine is the same piece later covered by Cyndi Lauper. Meanwhile Head created a minor radio controversy and Sister (a song about incest) created a major radio controversy.  Continue reading →

KHONG LO: VIETNAMESE GOD

Vietnam mapKHONG LO – This god was the primordial giant who separated the sky and the Earth, setting up columns to help support the sky similar to many other such deities in other pantheons. His breath is the wind and his voice the thunder.

When he saw that the propping up of the sky had “taken” he broke off the uppermost portions of the support columns and transformed them into stars in the sky (or in some myths into various mountain peaks or islands). Where he had dug out the Earth to build the columns oceans were formed. PELE AND HI’IAKA: EPIC OF HAWAII PART TWENTY-FOUR

Pearl Harbo areaBalladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the grand and exciting Hawaiian epic about the goddesses Pele and Hi’iaka.

PART TWENTY-FOUR

Hi’iaka, Prince Lohiau and the mortal woman Wahine guided their double-canoe into Kou (modern-day Honolulu). The goddess’ companions were unaware of the passions raging within Hi’iaka now that she knew her sister Pele, the fire and volcano goddess, had unleashed a lava flow on her beloved lehua forest at Puna. That betrayal had convinced Hi’iaka to repay her older sister in kind by yielding to her growing attraction to Prince Lohiau – the intended husband of Pele. Continue reading →
