BAD MOVIE TRIPLE FEATURE

As more foreplay for the upcoming Frontierado holiday (August 3rd) here’s a look at 3 weird westerns. For more bad movie reviews see my Bad Movie page.

BAD KIDS OF THE WEST (1967) – Even for a Spaghetti Western this movie is weird, weird, weird. A pair of outlaws on the run hide out in a town populated only by children who act like adult western townspeople. The little boys all try to act like the steely-eyed killers played by Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Franco Nero, John Garko, etc. The little girls all act like slutty saloon whores, making you wonder if child molesters were this film’s target audience. The charming vibe of Continue reading →

WNBA RESULTS: JUNE 22ND TO 24TH

The SAN ANTONIO SILVER STARS (logo at left) were at 4-4 headed into last night’s road game against the SEATTLE STORM. The Storm were riding a 2-game winning streak, one of which was a toppling of WNBA defending champs the MINNESOTA LYNX, ending their 10-0 run to start the season.

Seattle withstood a furious 4th quarter rally by the Silver Stars and won 82-76. Tanisha Wright led the Storm to their 3rd straight win with Continue reading →

FRONTIERADO RECIPE: CACTUS JACK

Frontierado is coming up on August 3rd so as part of my yearly countdown to the holiday here’s another mixed drink recipe ONLY for those of legal drinking age.

One of the official drinks of Frontierado is a Cactus Jack (again, my own recipe- two parts Jack Daniels, three parts Mountain Dew and one part lime-flavored sparkling water served with a long stem of Nopolito Cactus in the glass for that essential cactus taste. Just like eating the worm at the bottom of a bottle of Tequila when you’re done drinking your Cactus Jack you can eat the stem of cactus which is Continue reading →

BALLADEER’S BLOG TURNS TWO YEARS OLD TODAY

Typical Balladeer’s Blog reader

Can you believe it’s been two years already? Balladeer’s Blog has been satisfying the world’s appetite for bad movies, neglected mythology, ancient Greek comedies, forgotten television and college sports  since June 21st of 2010. Just one of the highlights of that period has been a shoutout from  international sex symbol Teddi Barrett (see photo). For more about Teddi click here: https://glitternight.com/2012/05/20/world-famous-sex-symbol-teddi-barrett-loves-balladeers-blog/

During last year’s college football season (October 8th to be precise) I reached my highest single- day hit total with 12,577 visits. My most popular individual bad movie review of this 2nd year on the web was Continue reading →

ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY: POLYZELUS

Balladeer’s Blog has now covered 16 Attic Old Comedies, so readers have been treated to a nice assortment. Most recently I experimented with a new type of format for addressing in bulk those comedies which have survived in such fragmentary form they don’t merit a full-length review.

Instead of examining individual comedies in these posts, I will focus on those ancient Greek comedians whose entire corpus is very, very fragmentary, touching briefly on all of their known works. For background info on ancient Greek comedy plus my previous reviews click here: https://glitternight.com/ancient-greek-comedies/

POLYZELUS – Very little is known about this comic playwright except that his comedies came in first place an impressive four times at Lenaea festivals. His career spanned from approximately 410 BCE to 380 BCE and fragments from just five of his plays have come down to us out of an unknown total number of works.

Aside from the political satire Demos- Tyndareus his fragmentary comedies all fall under the subgenre of Attic Old Comedy known as mythological burlesques. And of those four mythological burlesques three are specifically birth comedies, in other words lampoons of the VERY odd circumstances that generally accompanied the conception and birth of the deities in Greek myths. Remember, this type of bawdy disrespect for the gods was tolerated only in the “anything goes” arena of the comedy performances.

I. DEMOS- TYNDAREUS (410 BCE) – The Tyndareus part of this political comedy’s title refers to the mythical figure who came back from the dead like Lazarus in Continue reading →

WNBA RESULTS JUNE 18TH TO 21ST *UPDATED*

The WNBA season’s only undefeated team suffered its first loss and the only winless team notched their first victory on the same day! The Seattle Storm (logo at left) ended the 10-0 run of the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 65-62 nailbiter.

Meanwhile the 0-9 Tulsa Shock won an 87-75 home stand against the Phoenix Mercury to at last log a win for the season. The Shock’s next game will be Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Sparks, who last night utterly demolished the visiting Washington Mystics in a 101-70 embarrassment.

Keep checking back here at Balladeer’s Blog throughout the week for updated results plus the latest standings.

THURSDAY JUNE 21ST RESULTS – Indiana Fever crushed the Continue reading →

SIX NEGLECTED WILD WEST FIGURES

The big names in Wild West mythology get smothered with attention but with Frontierado coming up on August 3rd it’s the perfect time of year to shed a little light on the myths of some of the American West’s neglected figures. Here are six individuals who never seem to get the attention they deserve.

6. THE MORMON KID – No, that’s not a joke, Matt Warner really was known as the Mormon Kid for the religion he left to pursue a wild life as an outlaw. Some traditions still hold that the Mormon Kid got his first experience with gunplay as a Danite, the “Old West Knights” of the Mormon faith. (For a Danite as a good guy see the Tom Berenger western The Avenging Angel. For a Danite as a Continue reading →

WNBA RESULTS: JUNE 15TH – 17TH

A BRAND NEW RECORD – So far the MINNESOTA LYNX have owned this WNBA season. They’re the defending champions, they’re the only remaining undefeated team this year and last night they took sole possession of the longest season- opening winning streak in the Association’s history! The Lynx moved to 10-0, breaking the 9-0 tie they held with the 2001 and 2003 LOS ANGELES SPARKS. Minnesota slapped around the homestanding PHOENIX MERCURY in a 78-60 victory that will live on in the history books.

A FIZZLE FROM THE SPARKS – And speaking of the Sparks, they laid an uncharacteristic egg with a 92-59 butt kicking at the hands of the ATLANTA DREAM. Angel McCoughtry, the undisputed leader of the Dream, went Medieval on the Sparks, chalking up 31 points on her own. Atlanta improved to Continue reading →

HAPPY BLOOM’S DAY 2012

Yes, it’s the 16th of June, better known to James Joyce geeks like me as Bloom’s Day. The day is named in honor of Leopold Bloom, the Jewish advertising sales rep and Freemason who is one of the major characters in Joyce’s novel Ulysses. The novel also brings along Stephen Dedalus, the protagonist of his earlier novel Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. For those unfamiliar with this work, Ulysses is Joyce’s stream-of-consciousness novel in which he metaphorically features the events from the Odyssey in a single day – June 16th, 1904, in Dublin. (The day he met Nora Barnacle, the woman he would eventually marry after living together for decades) Bloom represents Ulysses/Odysseus, Stephen represents Telemachus and Leopold’s wife, Molly Bloom, represents Penelope.

The novel is Continue reading →

44 NAIA COLLEGE BASEBALL PLAYERS TAKEN IN 2012 MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT

It’s once again time for Balladeer’s Blog’s annual ritual of listing NAIA college baseball players taken in the MLB draft. The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds (logo at left) are among the teams who had players drafted.
