MORBIUS: HIS MOST HALLOWEENISH COVERS

morbius hitting smBalladeer’s Blog’s month-long look at Halloween continues! In the past, I examined the most Halloweenish covers for Marvel horror figures like Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider, the Simon Garth Zombie, Blade the Vampire Slayer, Satana, Lilith the Daughter of Dracula, Gabriel the Exorcist, Daimon Hellstrom and others. Last October I even looked at DC’s Creature Commandos.

“It’s Morbin’ time,” to quote the most ridiculed line from the ill-fated Morbius movie that starred Jared Leto.

vt 1VAMPIRE TALES Vol 1 #1 (June 1973)

Title: Morbius

Villains: Madame Laera and Nilrac

NOTE: This science-spawned vampire was mutated by the blood of vampire bats and other chemicals he used in an attempt to cure his own rare blood disease. After his debut in Spider-Man #s 101 and 102 plus clashes with Spider-Man, the Human Torch and the X-Men in Marvel Team-Up, Michael Morbius got his first solo story in Marvel’s black & white horror publication Vampire Tales.

FROM OUT OF THE SILENCE (1920) – HALLOWEEN READING

Halloween Month continues here at Balladeer’s Blog with this look at some ghost stories from over a hundred years ago.

from out of the silenceFROM OUT OF THE SILENCE: SEVEN STRANGE STORIES (full title) (1920) – Written by Lady Bessie Kyffin-Taylor. The stories are:

OUTSIDE THE HOUSE – A veteran of World War One (called the World War or the Great War at the time), who lost the use of a leg during the conflict, at last meets his fiancé’s relatives, the Falconer family. They are gracious hosts but aggressively warn the man to never leave the house after dark. Only at sunrise is it safe to venture out.

Hearing odd, menacing sounds outside during the night, and intrigued by the way even the windows are blocked off after dark, the man disregards the warning and goes outside one night to investigate. While walking the eerie, moonlit grounds of the estate he learns why no one leaves the house at night. Continue reading

OCTOBER FIFTH ROUNDUP OF NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS

democrat republican or awakeWE NEED THIRD PARTIES! Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog does another roundup of some of the latest. But first off, let me say that I have absolutely no idea why some people actually think Trump has a shot at becoming the next Speaker of the House. Did he just say he was okay with it as a massive troll joke? I don’t know.

breaking bidenBREAKING BIDEN, THE LATEST BOOK EXPOSING BIDEN FAMILY CORRUPTION, HAS FLOODED THE NATION WITH IN-DEPTH REVELATIONS. More HERE. And HERE. And HERE. And HERE.

STRIKING AUTO WORKERS SAY BIDEN IS “WIPING US OUT” WITH HIS POLICIES. Biden’s war on the working class continues.

BIDEN GIVES IN – STATES THERE IS “AN IMMEDIATE NEED” FOR A WALL ON AMERICA’S SOUTHERN BORDER. More HERE. You can’t make up this stuff. Trump got hundreds of miles of a wall built down there but was opposed all the way by Democrats and by Republicans on the take. The wall would be completed by now if people like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi had not fought it. “Trump’s Wall” they’d sneeringly call it.

ingrid lewis martinNEW YORK DEMOCRAT INGRID LEWIS-MARTIN CALLS ON “THE CONGRESS, THE SENATE AND THE PRESIDENT TO DO THEIR JOB, CLOSE THE BORDERS.” More HERE. Hey, didn’t we have a guy named Trump try to secure our borders, but it was called bigotry and got him attacked incessantly? And remember how sensibly wanting to secure the borders was idiotically called “Trumpism”, as if expecting health examinations and criminal background checks on people entering was “hate.”

MORE INFORMATION ON JOE’S BROTHER JAMES BIDEN’S ROLE IN THE FAMILY’S INFLUENCE-PEDDLING ACTIVITIES.

COURAGEOUS FEMALE ROLE MODEL TULSI GABBARD SPEAKS OUT ON HOW THE POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF OPPOSITION LEADER DONALD TRUMP IS DESTROYING DEMOCRACY’S FOUNDATION. Continue reading

SONNY CHIBA’S FILM “THE STREET FIGHTER” (1974) – NOTHING TO DO WITH THE VIDEO GAME

the street fighterTHE STREET FIGHTER (1974) – Long before the Street Fighter video games there was this ultra-violent cult film from Japan starring the one and only Shinichi “Sonny” Chiba. Long before Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky and Romeo Must Die, this 1970s grindhouse actioner featured an “x-ray vision” scene of the damage being done to a villain’s skull and brain by a powerful blow from the star.

Sonny Chiba had been a television and movie star in Japan for decades by this point, starring in everything from serious action films to kid-friendly ventures like Invasion of the Neptune Men and The Golden Bat. The Street Fighter, titled Clash! Killer Fist in Japan made Chiba an international sensation.

pic of sonny chiba in street fighterThe iconic Chinese superstar Bruce Lee had passed away by this point, and Japan’s Sonny Chiba was hailed as Lee’s true successor in martial arts cinema, albeit with karate, judo and other skills that differed from Lee’s. There is a degree of truth to such claims, but Sonny was a much darker, grittier figure even if he DOES make the same kind of noises that Bruce made.

The Street Fighter is notorious as the first U.S. film to be tagged with an X-Rating based purely on violence. Chiba’s character Takuma “Terry” Tsurugi is a brooding, bitter man of half-Japanese and half-Chinese background, and he grew up as an outcast due to such a mixed heritage. Hell, he was even imprisoned in an Imperial Japanese concentration camp as a child.

str fighterA lifetime of fighting in the streets of Japan has molded Terry into a legendarily hardened and ruthless man who is now a high-priced mercenary badass for hire. He’s not quite a “hero” since this film doesn’t have any, he’s just the main character like Michael Corleone in the Godfather movies.

The Street Fighter begins with Tsurugi being hired to bust out a Japanese gangster before his scheduled execution. Posing as a Buddhist Priest who’s come to the prison to comfort the condemned criminal before revealing his kickass abilities, Terry accomplishes this mission with backup from his lackey/ live-in servant Ratnose. CLARIFYING THE ABSURD “FRAUD” ALLEGATIONS FOR OVERSEAS READERS

From Joe Biden’s corporate fascist kleptocracy comes this item from INDEPENDENT VOTER SITE BALLADEER’S BLOG

democrat republican otherASSORTED OVERSEAS READERS HAVE REQUESTED CLARIFICATION OF THE NEW YORK CITY “FRAUD” NONSENSE. It doesn’t matter if you like or hate Donald Trump, you have got to be alarmed at the ongoing courtroom travesties that he is being subjected to.

Regarding the current NYC circus, it regards LOANS WHICH TRUMP ALREADY PAID BACK INCLUDING INTEREST, in which he submitted values placed on his properties by real estate professionals on the loan forms. ARTHUR ENGORON, A DEMOCRAT JUDGE HAS, WITHOUT DUE PROCESS, IMPOSED HIS OWN ESTIMATE ON THE VALUES AS AROUND 18 MILLION DOLLARS INSTEAD OF THE PROFESSIONALS’ ESTIMATE OF AROUND 300 MILLION DOLLARS.

Slovenly judge

An arrested drunk? Nope, it’s the alleged judge.

Then, the repulsive judge used the lower estimate – which has ALREADY been repudiated by actual real estate professionals – to claim that Trump “committed fraud” on the loan forms by going with the higher estimates PROVIDED TO HIM BY REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS.

AND I REPEAT – TRUMP ALREADY PAID BACK THE LOANS INCLUDING INTEREST! Any bank could have turned Trump down if it looked like a risky deal.
No bank was harmed, no shareholders or account holders either. And no bank lends money on collateral which they just sit back and allow the borrower to place the value on.

Obviously, this is another political prosecution that will probably get an initial guilty verdict from the clownish judge but get overturned on appeal. These prosecutions are being conducted to harm Trump’s campaign for 2024.

How many times do we have to go through this? America’s notoriously corrupt political parties have thrown false charge after false charge against Trump for years now, yet each time they conjure up another set of false charges the political establishment and the corporate media act like it HAS to be true this time, just to keep sending the warning that outsiders should stay out of the search for high office.

biden tax returnsRather than recycle the long list of outrageous claims against Trump let me just point out the most blatantly hypocritical one. Remember all the pressure on Trump to reveal years’ worth of tax returns? He did so and NOTHING BAD WAS FOUND! Yet, no other American politicians were called upon to similarly reveal their tax returns even though the overwhelming majority of people in Congress become literal millionaires during their time in office. Why target just one man? Again, because he’s an outsider and not a “made man” in the white-collar criminal fraternity of elected Democrats and Republicans. Continue reading

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) – CLASSIC SILENT HORROR FILM

phantom of the operaTHE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) – Lon Chaney Senior’s makeup and performance as the title character were envelope-pushing for 1925 audiences. To me this is the ULTIMATE silent horror film. It may sound odd, but in my opinion this movie is the very best cinematic adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel.

Nearly every frame of this masterpiece is like a painting and it’s a rare viewer who can take their eyes off the screen at all as the movie plays. Lon Chaney’s iconic portrayal of Erik, the hideously deformed Phantom of the Paris Opera House, is magnificent in every way. Continue reading

ALIEN AND DUNE MOVIES AS ANALOGIES FOR AMERICA RIGHT NOW

Mascot new lookBalladeer’s Blog remains the only site on the web that equally criticizes both elected Democrats and elected Republicans, depending on which party has been committing greater offenses at the moment.

“We’re a world of 7 billion people, 10 billion blogs and 20 billion political poses” is always the opening line. So, let’s have some fun framing American politics as part of the Alien and Dune franchises. Both political parties are bashed.

Ellen RipleyRIPLEY and the other humans in the Alien films are American VOTERS. As we struggle to survive in this dangerous setting we need to stand together against the common threats. And that applies whether a voter considers themselves Independent or Democrat or Republican. Political labels have become meaningless for US as the Neo-Feudalists view all of us as peasants and cannon fodder, anyway.   Continue reading

HALLOWEEN SEASON HORROR TALES FROM THE 1800s and EARLY 1900s

masc older picHalloween Season is underway here at Balladeer’s Blog! This time around I have so many new readers that I’ll start out with this look at some VERY old horror stories that are basically Halloween versions of the Ancient Science Fiction reviews I write.

CARL BLUVEN AND THE STRANGE MARINER (1833) – Fans of the supernatural elements in the Pirates of the Caribbean films may really enjoy this Norwegian short story. Businessman Carl Bluven strikes a dangerous bargain with the undead Kahlbranner, whose ghost ship haunts and commands the Maelstrom off the coast. Kahlbranner also guards the countless valuable cargos from all the ships to sink in that whirlpool. Continue reading
