EIGHT BLAXPLOITATION FILMS THAT DESERVE A CLOSER LOOK

Blaxploitation films are often dismissed by serious film students in the same way that Spaghetti Westerns are. Despite the widespread assumption that blaxploitation flicks were about nothing but the Three P’s – pimps, pushers and prostitutes – the reality is that many of them dealt with explosive issues in a way that mainstream filmmakers of the time would have shied away from. Here are eight examples that featured a premise or an approach that truly pushed the envelope.

8. FORCE FOUR (1975) – Also released under the unimaginative title Black Force, this film had an ingenious premise but its flawed delivery makes you wish someone would remake it.

The movie featured four covert operators with various commando and martial arts skills. The quartet, the “Force Four” of the title, were mercenaries specializing in stealing various artifacts that were plundered  from African nations during the colonial period.

Force Four would retrieve those artifacts from wealthy customers of black market art and relics and then return them to their clients – the African governments who wanted those items restored to their proper place. Think Mission: Impossible films crossed with the Lara Croft flicks for a comparison.

Unfortunately the incredibly low budget Continue reading

MARCH 10TH’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ACTION AND SCORES

The Florida Christian College Suns (logo at left) came into the NCCAA tournament seeded 4th, but unfortunately had a rough time of it, losing both their opening round game and also the consolation bracket game. The Suns are definitely up and coming, however, and have added baseball recently, with swirling rumors about a possible football program as well.

In the USCAA tournament the 8th seeded Berkeley College Knights are THE story, having put together three upsets three days in a row to advance to today’s championship game against the Andrews Cardinals. Meanwhile the NAIA Continue reading

ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY: ORE MINERS (C 420’s BCE)

I had planned on examining another comedy by Cratinus for my next Ancient Greek Comedy post here at Balladeer’s Blog. Understandably my sister Rosemary’s hospitalization has changed quite a few things. She is out of the hospital now but needs more assistance than usual for a while so with the limited time I have available right now I figured it was better to do a brief take on the VERY fragmentary remains of Pherecrates’ comedy Ore Miners AKA Metalles.

THE PLAY

A group of ore miners accidentally dig so deep underground that they stumble upon the Netherworld. While there they observe the automatist Utopia that Pherecrates depicts the souls of the dead as dwelling in.

Rivers flowed with porridge and soup instead of water and on the Continue reading

END OF THE WORLD MYTH: THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH (1970)

This time around Balladeer’s Blog will be examining the incredibly detailed end of the world scenario presented in Hal Lindsey’s 1970 book The Late Great Planet Earth. The book’s interpretation of Biblical “prophecies” in terms of contemporary geopolitical events was so thoroughly researched that it still provides good reading fun as pure escapist fiction. The book was a phenomenal hit and was later made into a documentary (snicker) narrated by Orson Welles in his “anything for money” phase.

Here is a brief outline of the way in which Lindsey’s book depicted the End Times:

1. The Antichrist, posing as a human politician, finally brings peace to the eternal problem child of the world, the Middle East. This accomplishment enhances his political Continue reading

FORGOTTEN TELEVISION TREASURE: THE NEW PEOPLE (1969)

T My sister Rosemary has been hospitalized since Saturday and I’ve been updating my blog remotely here and there to take my mind off worrying about her whenever I can squeeze out a few moments. This post is a little shoutout to her since it looks at one of her favorite forgotten shows. Thank you to loved ones and friends doing their best to help me through this difficult time.

The New People was part of a brief and very odd experiment with Continue reading
