SHINTO DEITY: KUYEBIKO

Kuyebiko was the Shinto scarecrow god. Originally he functioned as the protector of the rice fields, a task assigned him by his father Inari the rice god. He was considered to be incarnate in all scarecrows and eventually came to be  considered as a divinitory deity who knew everything that transpired under the heavens.

The leap from being the god of scarecrows to divinitory deity came about because of Continue reading

ISLAM’S WAR ON WOMEN CONTINUES: HERE’S HOW YOU CAN LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD

Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog will remember the heroic Irshad Manji, a Muslim woman who is openly lesbian and has been working with other Muslims to initiate reform in Islam. Irshad’s book, The Trouble With Islam Today, was discussed in a previous post here in which I also lauded her courage in dealing with the threats of  physical violence which she and her fellow reformers face on a regular basis.

FORGOTTEN TELEVISION: THE SPIRIT (1987)

This often-forgotten telefilm from 1987 was a pilot movie for a series that never panned out, but Spirit purists who complained about the 2008 movie version may actually prefer this unassuming little flick to the big- budget 21st Century version.

The Frank Miller movie from 2008 changed  the Spirit’s iconic costume to black instead of blue and “Millerized” him, making him a kind of Dark Knight clone instead of the lighter, quirkier hero that Will Eisner fans remembered him as being. For Spirit novices, the superhero  was detective Denny Colt of fictional Central City. In his origin story he ran afoul of the mad scientist Dr Cobra, and in the resulting struggle got drenched and drowned in one of the good doctor’s experimental chemicals.

In the “embalming-free” world of superhero fiction, Colt was buried in Wildwood Cemetery, but, as it turned out, Dr Cobra’s chemicals had Continue reading

END OF THE WORLD MYTH: PURIM 2012

With December 21st loonies insisting that’s when the world will end Balladeer’s Blog has been looking at previous end of the world scares, one of which just passed.

But you'll notice not one person was killed over this picture.

I was informed by a sincere commentor on my Criswell post that the feast of Purim, celebrated March 7th, 8th and 9th this year, was supposed to be the date that Jesus returned to claim his people and usher in the end times. The person, from Continue reading
