D3 AMERICAN TEAM WINS THE GOLD MEDAL

The United States produced a stunning display of offensive fireworks and defensive dominance to humble Canada 50-7 in the Gold Medal game of the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship and defend the world title it won in Japan in 2007.

USA scored 21 points in the final 1:51 of the first half and Continue reading

FRONTIERADO POKER: BETTER THAN SEX? YOU BE THE JUDGE

As promised here are the rules for Frontierado Poker, the game that is strictly my own invention to go along with my made-up Holiday Frontierado.

1. Remove all face cards from the deck. The game is played with a 40-card deck.

2. Every player antes up. (I’m not advocating gambling. You can decide for yourselves what you play for.)

3. Each player is Continue reading

SHAMELESS BRAGGING: BALLADEER’S BLOG FEATURED

My blog has once again been featured, this time in a press release and at the site of Humboldt State University. Their stadium, the Redwood Bowl, was featured in my recent bit on The Top Six College Football Stadiums In D2.

The response has been tremendous, from D2 message boards and the institutions themselves and I am very appreciative! I’ve been getting literally thousands of visits to that post over the past few days and some very nice e-mails from students and administrators at those schools. Humboldt State went the extra mile, contacting me with a few e-mail interview questions and doing that nice simultaneous press release and post at their site. Here is the link! Let’s all cheer on the Lumberjacks – http://hsujacks.com/news/2011/7/19/FB_0719114546.aspx?path=football

PULP HEROES: THE MOON MAN

The Moon Man

The Moon Man

THE MOON MAN – Created by Frederick C Davis, the Moon Man is, to me, the epitome of the campy but fascinating heroes the old pulp publications used to treat readers to, issue after issue. Operating in fictional Great City, the Moon Man not only waged war on the ruthless representatives of the criminal element, he also plundered their ill-gotten wealth from them and distributed it to the Great Depression-ravaged poor of the 1930s.

This not only made the hero a combination of the best elements of the Shadow and Robin Hood, but it also gave him a healthy dose of “Green Hornet appeal”, too, because, like the Hornet, the Moon Man was hunted by both the crooks AND the cops, doubling the danger for the Continue reading

THE TOP SIX COLLEGE FOOTBALL STADIUMS IN NCAA DIVISION 2

Yes, I know that technically the plural form of stadium would be “stadia” but I’m going with the more generally known form here. With this post I’ll be looking at some of the D2 football venues that I feel are that division’s equivalent of D1’s Big House or The Swamp.

THE TOP 4 FRONTIERADO MOVIES: NUMBER 4: TOM SAWYER (1973)

The TOM SAWYER I’m referring to here is the 1973 musical version which is unforgiveably forgotten by many people. This musical has some incredibly catchy songs, memorable dialogue portions and terrific performances from all cast members, young and old.

Most importantly the film nicely distills the essential elements of Mark Twain’s popular story in a nearly seamless way. Anything you loved from the book when you read it is to be found here: Tom’s tall tales to Continue reading
