USCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS CROWNED, NCCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CONTINUES

The Briarcliffe Bulldogs “controlled their own destiny”, to use one of the most repulsively overused cliches in sports. They knew what they had to do and they went out and did it. Facing elimination themselves they forced a second game by defeating the Southern Virginia University Knights 11-9. In the deciding game, a thriller for the ages, the Continue reading

MORE SON OF SVENGOOLIE

For more bits from Rich Koz, the Babe Ruth of the old-time movie hosts, let’s move to his (and his predecessor’s) running jokes about Berwyn, a Polish American community near Chicago. In the 1960’s Cleveland’s late night movie host Ghoulardi poked fun at the Polish suburb of Parma. In the early 1970’s the original Svengoolie used Chicago’s equivalent of Parma, Berwyn, as the butt of frequent jokes. The mere mention of the name would prompt the sound byte of a disbelieving voice quipping “BURRRRR-wiiin?” Son of Svengoolie continued the tradition.

NCCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES – DIVISION TWO IS DONE, DIVISION ONE IS JUST BEGINNING

The National Christian College Athletic Association Division 2 World Series is over and the Toccoa Falls College Eagles are the champions! They put away the Clearwater Christian College Cougars by a score of 3-0 to take the title. For those unfamiliar with how the college baseball divisions do their World Series there are several teams (the number varies from division to division) and they Continue reading

SIX-GUN SARA ENTERS THE FRONTIERADO VALHALLA!

Frontierado is coming up on the first Friday in August and a powerful new cultural force has just been added to help spread the good word (“Did you know Frontierado has a wonderful plan for your life?”) about the holiday. That force is Sara from the Lifewith4cats blog and the blog called Mideival Maiden. She was one of the respondents when I mentioned how I do customized sagas for people if they want and she is so nice she ran it on her blog and also linked to my main Frontierado post to help spread the word about my made-up holiday! How cool is that?

Here are links to the two blog posts Six-Gun Sara was kind enough to make about all this – http://midaevalmaiden.wordpress.com/2011/05/17/the-day-you-stop-playing-is-the-day-you-begin-to-die/

FRONTIERADO TRIPLE FEATURE OF THE BAD, THE WEIRD AND THE FREAKY

With the Frontierado holiday coming up the first Friday in August I’ll be devoting more and more coverage to it. To learn more about this holiday click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/07/28/just-9-more-shopping-days-until-frontierado/

As we get closer to Frontierado I’ll begin examining quality westerns but for now you can once again think of me as the Bronson Canyon Kid (bad movie buffs will get it) as I take a look at three more weird westerns.

THE DEVIL AND MISS SARAH (1971) – A veritable ton of familiar western stars appear in this supernatural western that sort of reminds me of Black Noon (previously reviewed in my The Bad, The Weird And The Freaky segments.) Gene “Bat Masterson” Barry plays notorious outlaw Continue reading

YA WANTED MORE SON OF SVENGOOLIE? GLAD TO OBLIGE!

Well, from the reaction to the latest of my various posts about Rich Koz AKA Son of Svengoolie (and eventually just plain Svengoolie, like his predecessor) readers are intrigued by the guy. Anybody who likes my Bad Movie reviews will love this guy, whose show Son of Svengoolie (1979-1986) was, in my opinion, the funniest of the old-school movie host programs. I never got to see the original shows, but thanks to books and youtube I’ve spent years enjoying “Sven’s” style. Here’s another link to one of his song parodies. Just 2 minutes in length. The occassion was Continue reading

PULP HEROES: SILVER JOHN – HOPH AND SHIVER IN THE PINES

I’m continuing my look at Manly Wade Wellman’s pulp hero Silver John, the roaming singer and guitarist who fights supernatural forces in the Appalachian Mountains of long ago, sort of like a countrified Orpheus meets Kolchak. He’s called Silver John because of the silver strings on his guitar and the silver coins he carries in his pockets. For more details click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

YOU KNOW THE TALE OF HOPH – (No, it’s not a story about David Hasselhoff) In this Silver John vignette our hero plans to end the reign of terror of Hoph, a werewolf/ vampire hybrid who Continue reading
