HOT NEW GAME! WHICH ONE’S AL DAVIS?

One of these figures is Al Davis, the owner of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. The other one is Captain Christopher Pike from the famous two- part Star Trek story The Menagerie. Can you tell which one’s which? (Helpful hint: Al Davis is more casually dressed yet somehow less alert- looking than Captain Continue reading

JANUARY 16TH UPDATE TO VIETNAMESE MYTHOLOGY PAGE

Just a note to point out that I added two more chapters to the saga of the god Thach Sanh and added an all-new entry – this time on the Ba Co. If you need a quick, glib comparison think of the Ba Co as the Vietnamese pantheon’s equivalent of the Sirens from Graeco-Roman myth or the goddess Ran from Teutono-Norse myth. THE 32 MOST UNIQUE TEAM NAMES IN DIVISION 1 COLLEGE SPORTS

Mascot FOUR original pics

Balladeer’s Blog

Before any of my regular readers get upset let me point out right off the bat that I am NOT going to start covering Division 1 sports on a regular basis. This will simply be a quick list of the most unique nicknames for D1 teams outside of the 120 schools that count as 1A (FBS for you spineless conformists) for football. There’s no contest this time and I won’t bother with pertinent details about the schools. I’ll just feature the logos and my pithy comments. Since this is the only time I’ll deal with Division 1 I’m doing more than 20 to get all the unique names in. And by unique I mean a name not shared by a team in one of the divisions I cover, hence no UTSA  Roadrunners or Campbell Camels, etc.

32. SAINT FRANCIS (PA) RED FLASH – CONFERENCE AFFILIATION – THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE – The name and logo can’t help but make you think of the superhero The Flash from DC Comics which lends the nickname a certain kind of Neo-Nerd Chic. Sort of like the Blue  Streaks from a few divisions down in the college sports world. Plus this school plays football, always a plus with me. Continue reading

INSTANT KARMA’S GONNA GET YOU, LITTLE LEBRON!

An alleged injury plus three losses in a row since The Big Ringless (Or The Lord Of No Rings, take your pick) made with his bitchy little tweet about his former team’s plight. A tweet he then tried to deny with a lame story NOBODY believed since everyone knows a retweet will have an RT in front of it. Is Lebron a genuine sports world villain, or is he just incredibly stupid? Or simply immature? We do have to remember that he was hyped as King James since he was in high school even though he hadn’t done anything to earn such a nickname. Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan have multiple championship rings and are far more Continue reading

MILESTONES IN THE HISTORY OF STUPIDITY

On this date in 1989 Muslims in Bradford, England burned copies of author Salman Rushdie‘s book The Satanic Verses amid their clergy’s call for the killing of that same author. The more things change, the more they stay the same!
