In NAIA baseball’s ongoing conference tournaments the Blue Mountain College Toppers (logo at left) are the biggest story so far. They came into the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament seeded 6th, but on Day 1 of the tourney they upset the number 1 seeds, the Freed Hardeman Lions, then yesterday on Day 2 the Toppers defeated the 4th- seeded Bethel (TN) Wildcats. Today they try to keep their upset mojo going when they take on the 2 seeds, the Union Bulldogs.
Meanwhile a few conference champions have already been crowned. The Lee Flames have won the Southern States Athletic Conference, the LSU- Shreveport Pilots (as in riverboat pilots ) took the Red River Athletic Conference title and the Continue reading

USAO TRIUMPHANT – The NAIA’s UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS (logo at left) handily defeated the MIDAMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EVANGELS in both games of yesterday’s doubleheader. The Drovers (love that name) crushed the Evangels in their own house by scores of 10-4 and 14-3.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS – The LSU-SHREVEPORT PILOTS (as in riverboat pilots) are the number 1 team in the NAIA rankings and took 2 games from the HOUSTON-VICTORIA JAGUARS in a tight 3-1 contest followed by an 8-0 blowout.
INSTANT CLASSICS – The 2nd-ranked OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY STARS won an epic duel with the ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS. The Stars were on the road but prevailed 6-5 in the opening game of this SAC battle royal. The Hillcats defeated OCU 3-1 in an equally exciting game 2.
NOT-SO-CLASSIC – The number 3 LEE FLAMES incinerated the (15) SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC RUNNING HORNETS in a 7-0 yawner and the 4th-ranked EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY EAGLES were routed at home by the ever-tough UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BEAUFORT SAND SHARKS (love that name) by a score of 9-2.
MARATHON MEN – It took an astonishing SEVENTEEN INNINGS for a final result between the SIENA HEIGHTS SAINTS and the LOURDES UNIVERSITY GRAY WOLVES. The Saints at long last emerged with an 8-7 win in this rotation-killing ordeal. Meanwhile, the TRINITY CHRISTIAN TROLLS defeated the CARDINAL STRITCH WOLVES in 13 innings. The final score was Trolls 4 Wolves 3.
THE SOUND AND THE FURY – The FAULKNER EAGLES, ranked at Continue reading

SOUTHERN NAZARENE TOPPLES NUMBER ONE – The SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM (love that name) took down the number 1 team in the NAIA rankings yesterday with a 69-67 overtime win. The OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON suffered their first loss as a result, despite leading 40-33 at halftime. Regulation ended with the score knotted up at 57 all, and the home- standing SNU team edged out the Bison in the extra session. The Crimson Storm is now 13-4 and the Bison fall to 15-1.
EAGLES CLAWED BY COUGARS – The 4th ranked CONCORDIA (CA) EAGLES (whom I still say should change their name to the Condors) fell on the road to the number 7 AZUSA PACIFIC COUGARS in an Continue reading

For the second year in a row the college football champions of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics have defeated the football champions of NCAA Division 3 college football. The Saint Xavier University Cougars, the gridiron pride of Chicago, won Balladeer’s Bowl II by having my readers vote for them nearly two to one over the NCAA’s team, the Whitewater Warhawks. The Warhawks fall to 0-2 in Balladeer’s Bowl appearances, having lost to the NAIA’s CC Fighting Saints last year.
The Cougars from Rich Koz-land received Continue reading

It’s time for the 2nd edition of Balladeer’s Bowl, the annual event where I pit the NAIA college football champs against the champs from NCAA Division 3. The outcome is decided by votes from you readers. This year the NAIA is represented by the pride of Rich Koz-land AKA Chicago, IL, the St Xavier University Cougars (helmet at left). The Cougars pulled off the very difficult task of winning the title in their very first appearance in the championship game. Plus they had to do it by defeating the CC Fighting Saints, the dominant NAIA football dynasty of the past decade.
Making their second appearance in Balladeer’s Bowl are the NCAA D3 champs, the Whitewater Warhawks. The Warhawks once again defeated the Mt Union Purple Raiders for a Threepeat in D3 titles. Last year the Warhawks lost to the 2010 NAIA champs, the aforementioned CC Fighting Saints, by a two to one margin in the voting. Will it be a 2nd straight victory for the NAIA team in the most illustrious Bowl of the season? Get your votes in and I’ll announce the winner next Tuesday, January 3rd. To keep the voting honest and prevent multiple votes by the same people you can vote by Continue reading
