COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ACTION

*** NAIA DIVISION TWO ***

Indiana Wesleyan WildcatsFINAL FOUR: FIRST SEMIFINAL – This was a tale of two Halves as the 2 seeds – the INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS – took on their Region’s 1 seeds – the DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS.

The first 20 minutes were all Wildcats as they charged out to a 40-25 lead over the Panthers. After the break Indiana Wesleyan University had to hold on by their fingertips against a Davenport University rally. The Wildcats won the game 66-65 and moved on to the title match. Bob Peters led the scoring for IWU with 17 points.   Continue reading

TOURNAMENT ACTION CONTINUES IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL

*** NCAA DIVISION TWO ***

Stonehill Skyhawks logoROUND TWO RESUMES – Yesterday the 2nd Round continued in D2. The 4th seeded STONEHILL COLLEGE SKYHAWKS did battle with their Region’s 8 seeds – the SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY PENMEN. The Penmen stunned the Skyhawks out of the gate and by Halftime had built up a 37-21 lead. Stonehill College came fighting back in the 2nd Half and forced Overtime with a 65-65 tie to end Regulation. In the extra session the Skyhawks won it by a tight score of 75-74. Adam Bramanti led Stonehill with 21 points.

Lincoln Memorial University RailsplittersRAILSPLITTERS ADVANCE – The LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY RAILSPLITTERS – the 1 seeds in their Region – took the court against the 4th seeded QUEENS UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE ROYALS. The Railsplitters notched a 43-31 advantage over the Royals by the break. From there Lincoln Memorial University proceeded to blow out Queens U of Charlotte to the tune of 95-67. Gerel Simmons contributed 25 points to lead the Railsplitters in scoring.   Continue reading

FINAL COLLEGE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE SEASON DECIDED

* NCAA DIVISION TWO *

Florida Southern College MocsCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Balladeer’s Blog’s college basketball coverage for the 2014-2015 season officially comes to a close with this final title game in the divisions covered here. The sole remaining 1 seed – the FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE MOCCASINS – played the 3rd seeded INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CRIMSON HAWKS. The Crimson Hawks had upset three other 1 seeds along the way (D2 has eight 1 seeds in its tournament) but the Moccasins proved to be too much for them. Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: D2 SEMIFINALS

* NCAA DIVISION TWO *

Florida Southern College MocsFINAL FOUR – GAME ONE – This semifinal game pitted two 1 seeds against each other – the FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE MOCCASINS and the BELLARMINE UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS. After an action-packed opening Half the Moccasins held a 40-36 lead over the Knights at the break. In the 2nd Half Florida Southern College withstood all the comeback efforts of Bellarmine University and walked away with a 79-76 victory. Dominique Williams led the Moccasins with his 22 points.   Continue reading

FINAL FOUR BERTHS FILLED FOR NCAA DIVISION TWO

* NCAA DIVISION TWO *

IUP Crimson HawksFINAL FOUR – FIRST BERTH – This year four of D2’s eight 1 seeds advanced to these Quarterfinal games. (D2 starts with 8 Regions of 8 teams seeded 1-8) In this particular hardcourt clash the 3rd seeded INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CRIMSON HAWKS toppled the 1 seeded AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS. The Crimson Hawks were trailing the Cougars by just 33-31 at Halftime and after a brutal, hard-fought 2nd Half had defeated Azusa Pacific by a score of 69-65. Devante Chance led IUP with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.   Continue reading

DALTON STATE ROADRUNNERS ARE NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPS

dalton state roadrunnersCall it The Year of the Roadrunner! The DALTON STATE ROADRUNNERS have won their first ever National Championship. The 6th seeded Roadrunners defeated the (BD) WESTMONT COLLEGE WARRIORS in last night’s NAIA Basketball Championship Game. Dalton State actually trailed the Warriors by 8 just 5 minutes into the game but by Halftime had come back in style for a 37-21 advantage. Continue reading

NAIA FINAL FOUR: UPSET CITY

* NAIA DIVISION ONE *

dalton state roadrunnersFINAL FOUR – GAME ONE – The 6 seeds – the DALTON STATE ROADRUNNERS – toppled the 2nd seeded TALLADEGA COLLEGE TORNADOES in this first semifinal. The Roadrunners came back from being 6 points down to the Tornadoes to tie the game at 29-29 by Halftime. After the break Dalton State made their move, with their defense strangling Talladega College and with their offense slowly but surely getting more and more distance between themselves and the favorites. In the end the Roadrunners advanced to the Championship Game by a score of 64-54. Preston Earle led Dalton State with 16 points and 8 rebounds.   Continue reading

MORE CHAMPIONS CROWNED PLUS NAIA FINAL FOUR ACTION

* NAIA DIVISION ONE *

dalton state roadrunnersFINAL FOUR – FIRST BERTH – The 6 seeds – the DALTON STATE ROADRUNNERS – toppled the 3rd seeded CAL STATE SAN MARCOS COUGARS in this game. The Roadrunners put the Cougars on Upset Alert by Halftime with a 40-36 lead but Cal State San Marcos tied the game late at 70-70 to force Overtime. In the extra session Dalton State emerged with an 80-76 victory to move on to the Final Four. Anthony Hilliard had 20 points to lead the Roadrunners.   Continue reading

NJCAA FINAL FOUR ACTION PLUS MORE TOURNAMENT RESULTS

* NJCAA DIVISION ONE *

South Plains College Texans NEWFINAL FOUR – GAME ONE – This first semifinal saw the 8th seeded SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE TEXANS take on the 12 seeds – the HILL COLLEGE REBELS. In this 2015 NJCAA Tournament which has been so tough on single-digit seeds it seemed yet another upset might be in the offing as the Rebels led the Texans 40-38 at Halftime. The 2nd Half was equally tight and Regulation ended in a 79-79 tie. In Overtime the South Plains College offense exploded, outscoring Hill College 23-11 for a 102-90 victory! Andre Spight led the Texans with 22 points.   Continue reading

NCCAA FINAL FOUR PLUS OTHER TOURNAMENT ACTION

* NCCAA DIVISION ONE *

Colorado Christian University CougarsFINAL FOUR – GAME ONE – This first semifinal pitted the 4 seeds – the COLORADO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY COUGARS – against the top seeded LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES. The Cougars showed the Flames that they came to win, and took it to them on both sides of the ball. By Halftme Colorado Christian University had compiled a 43-26 lead over Lee University. In the 2nd Half the Cougars successfully kept the Flames from making much headway against their point deficit and bounced them by a score of 88-74. Michael Brown led CCU in this upset with 26 points and 8 rebounds.   Continue reading
