NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM JANUARY 26TH

Cumberlands PatriotsNUMBER THREE TAKES A FALL – The 25th ranked UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS hosted the number 3 team in the nation yesterday, the PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS. In what turned out to be the game of the day the Patriots hung tough and won a 73-71 Instant Classic that may turn out to be the team’s signature win of the regular season.   ###   Meanwhile the WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS took on the 4th ranked JOHN BROWN UNIVERSITY GOLDEN EAGLES and came out on top by a score of 84-70.   ###   At number 8 the WILLIAM CAREY CRUSADERS fell on the road to the unranked AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY WARHAWKS in a 62-55 clash.   ###   The (18) ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS joined the fad of ranked teams losing on the road yesterday. The Hillcats were toppled 69-65 by the ever-tough LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS.   ###   .. And the number 24 SHAWNEE STATE BEARS added some novelty by losing at home to the ST CATHARINE PATRIOTS in an 80-72 hardcourt epic.  

southeastern university fireTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA DIVISION TWO – The SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FIRE brought down the number 4 ST THOMAS (FL) BOBCATS in a 60-58 game for the ages.   ###   The T12th ranked BETHEL (IN) PILOTS (riverboat pilots) fell on the road 85-79 to the unranked TAYLOR TROJANS.   ###   In a case of Tiger on Tiger violence the DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS toppled the homestanding (T12) DOANE TIGERS by a score of 87-83.   ###   The COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES took it on the road and brought down the 15th ranked NORTHWEST (WA) EAGLES  84-72.   ###   … And the Continue reading

In a hard-fought game that the Georgetown faithful will be talking about for years to come the Tigers emerged with an 80-77 victory.    ***    Meanwhile, in another example of an unranked team toppling a ranked program the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS (TX) CELTS likewise played road warriors and defeated the 24th ranked TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS. This matchup was a defensive epic with the final score being Celts  55  Steers  53     ###    … And finishing out the upsets in the NAIA Top 25 yesterday the number 25 MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS fell to the CULVER- STOCKTON WILDCATS in an 89-88 heartbreaker on the road.

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM JANUARY 12TH, 2013

Highland Cavaliers logo NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – The NAIA’s top-ranked UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS were upset on the road by the UVA-WISE HIGHLAND CAVALIERS (logo at left). The Highland Cavs won by a respectable score of 69-54 so this was no last-minute fluke with a half-court three or any other freak event.  

Rocky Mountain College logoOTHER TOP 25 UPSETS – A day after trouncing Montana Tech the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS held serve as well and brought down the number 3 LEWIS-CLARK STATE WARRIORS in an 89-80 affair that was LCSC’s 1st loss of the season   ###   The (18) WESTMINSTER (UT) GRIFFINS dismembered the 10th ranked MONTANA STATE-NORTHERN LIGHTS by a rollicking 82-50   ###   The HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS entered the Century Club on the same day they upset the 15th ranked CONCORDIA (CA) EAGLES in a 101-91 game that left the Royals fans feeling regal satisfaction   ###   At 19 the ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS lost an 81-80 heartbreaker at the (25) JOHN BROWN GOLDEN EAGLES   ###   … And the (22) OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY STARS joined the other ranked teams losing on the road, falling to the WAYLAND BAPTIST PIONEERS in a tight 70-68 matchup.

LCU Chaparrals CHAPARRALS RULE THE WORLD – Readers familiar with Balladeer’s Blog’s college football coverage are well aware of the tendency of NAIA teams to upset teams from NCAA Division 2. That tendency extends to basketball season at times, too. Yesterday the LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS (logo above) took it on the road and upset D2’s NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS in a 90-88 game that Chaps fans will be talking about for years to come.

ius_logoCENTURY CLUB – Among the teams scoring 100 or more points yesterday: The INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST GRENADIERS improved to 11-3 with a 108-75 road thrashing of the POINT PARK PIONEERS. The Grenadiers (love that name) led 59-34 at halftime and glided through the 2nd half to remain unbeaten in conference play.   ###   The LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS clipped the wings of the HAMILTON HARRIERS by a score of 100-69   ###   The UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS held serve by taking down the TENNESSEE WESLEYAN BULLDOGS  100-83   ###   In the Chuck Daly Tournament the NORTHWOOD (FL) UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS slammed the VALOR CHRISTIAN COLLEGE WARRIORS by a score of 106-73   ###   The OLD WESTBURY PANTHERS topped the MISERICORDIA COUGARS in a 100-97 catfight   ###   … And the GREENSBURG BOBCATS devoured the WRIGHT STATE LAKERS in a Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL RESULTS FROM FEBRUARY 11TH

 SOMETIMES THE GAME EXCEEDS THE HYPE – Yesterday’s nearly sole clash between ranked teams in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics ) exceeded all the hype surrounding the game going in. The number 5 GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS (logo at left) traveled to face the 20th- ranked SAINT FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS and emerged with an 89-87 victory in an undeniable Instant Classic. The Lancers trailed 49-44 at halftime but regrouped in the 2nd half to come out on top in this game for the ages.  

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – In NCAA D3 action, the 2nd- ranked MIDDLEBURY PANTHERS were upset on the road by the number 6 AMHERST LORD JEFFS. The final score in this overtime Battle Royal was 77-75.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA-1 – The 5th- ranked OUR LADY OF THE LAKE SAINTS fell to the SOUTHWEST ASSEMBLIES OF GOD LIONS in a 106-80 shocker … The number 8 GEORGETOWN (KY) TIGERS were toppled on the road by the SHAWNEE STATE BEARS in a 63-59 game that thrilled the Shawnee State Homecoming crowd … The 9th- ranked WESTMONT WARRIORS fell to the unranked HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS by a score of 77-70 … The MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS (love that name) upset the Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR FEBRUARY11TH

 The biggest news in college basketball since last Saturday came on Thursday night, when the Calumet College Crimson Wave (logo at left) upset the top-ranked Robert Morris (IL) Eagles! The final score after overtime was 92-85 and marked the first time the Crimson Wave have ever defeated RMU, one of their conference rivals. A 16-2 run in the 2nd half helped Calumet pull off this landmark upset in their own arena on the shores of Lake Michigan. Robert Morris falls to 22-2, the Crimson Wave evened their record at 12-12.

KICKS LIKE A MULE – The MUHLENBERG MULES (logo at right) upset the 8th-ranked FRANKLIN & MARSHALL DIPLOMATS, making the Dips the highest-ranked victims of yesterday’s action. The final score in this Instant Classic was 60-58.

NUMBER ONE TOOK A FALL – If you missed this result from Friday’s action, the POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS upset the top-ranked SHORTER HAWKS in a 73-72 epic.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The 8th-ranked LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS fell at home to the CUMBERLANDS BULLDOGS in a 77-76 nailbiter … The number 10 MSUN LIGHTS were upset on the road by the GREAT FALLS ARGONAUTS 69-68 … The 13th- ranked MASTER’S MUSTANGS lost at home 60-58 to the HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS …

COLLEGE BASKETBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR FEBRUARY 4TH

 You can insert your own David vs Goliath cliche here. Yesterday the NAIA’s 8-17 Point University Skyhawks (logo at left) handed the number one team in the country, the Shorter Hawks, their first loss of the season. The final score in this Instant Classic was 73-72, with a pair of clutch free-throws from Jeremy Mahaffey icing the win for the Skyhawks.  Shorter falls to 21-1 as the Skyhawks, who are also one of the NAIA’s newest football institutions, continue to make their presence known in their first full year of NAIA play.

In other action from yesterday the CC Fighting Saints took down the visiting Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears 78-70, the Tabor College Blue Jays defeated the Ottawa (KS) Braves in overtime by a score of 92-80 and the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers (love that name) won 72-66 over the UC-Merced Golden Bobcats.

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL RESULTS FROM JANUARY 28TH

 HAWKS TRIUMPHANT – The NAIA’s 17th-ranked LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES gave the top-ranked SHORTER HAWKS nearly all they could handle yesterday.  The Flames took the Hawks into overtime but wound up losing to them 80-77 on their own court. The Hawks remain the only undefeated team in NAIA-1 basketball.
