NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM JANUARY 12TH, 2013

Highland Cavaliers logo NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – The NAIA’s top-ranked UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS were upset on the road by the UVA-WISE HIGHLAND CAVALIERS (logo at left). The Highland Cavs won by a respectable score of 69-54 so this was no last-minute fluke with a half-court three or any other freak event.  

Rocky Mountain College logoOTHER TOP 25 UPSETS – A day after trouncing Montana Tech the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS held serve as well and brought down the number 3 LEWIS-CLARK STATE WARRIORS in an 89-80 affair that was LCSC’s 1st loss of the season   ###   The (18) WESTMINSTER (UT) GRIFFINS dismembered the 10th ranked MONTANA STATE-NORTHERN LIGHTS by a rollicking 82-50   ###   The HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS entered the Century Club on the same day they upset the 15th ranked CONCORDIA (CA) EAGLES in a 101-91 game that left the Royals fans feeling regal satisfaction   ###   At 19 the ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS lost an 81-80 heartbreaker at the (25) JOHN BROWN GOLDEN EAGLES   ###   … And the (22) OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY STARS joined the other ranked teams losing on the road, falling to the WAYLAND BAPTIST PIONEERS in a tight 70-68 matchup. 

St Thomas (Fl) Bobcats logoTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA DIVISION 2 – The (17) ST THOMAS (FL) BOBCATS took it on the road and brought down the number 2 EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY EAGLES in an 81-78 Instant Classic   ###   The 3rd ranked NORTHWOOD (FL) SEAHAWKS, who recently added ice hockey to their athletics department, fell in Overtime on the road to the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL WARRIORS by a score of 93-88   ###   The number 12 GRACE LANCERS were upset by the ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS in a thrilling 74-69 affair   ###   The 14th ranked SOUTHERN OREGON RAIDERS lost at home to the (22) NORTHWEST (WA) EAGLES by a score of 82-73   ###   … And at number 19 the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES suffered a 66-59 road loss to the unranked SOUTHEASTERN (FL) FIRE

wesley wolverines logoD3 TOP 25 UPSETS – The WESLEY WOLVERINES took down the visiting 9th ranked ST MARY’S (MD) SEAHAWKS by a score of 68-54   ###   The unranked UW-SUPERIOR YELLOW JACKETS got past the (11) WHITEWATER WARHAWKS in a 69-66 game for the ages   ###   The WASHINGTON COLLEGE SHOREMEN eked out a 1 point win to topple the number 14 FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL DIPLOMATS  62-61   ###   The (23) ROSE-HULMAN ENGINEERS fell at home 69-60 to the TRANSYLVANIA (KY) PIONEERS   ###   The VIRGINIA WESLEYAN MARLINS held serve to bring down the 24th ranked RANDOLPH WILDCATS  72-66   ###   … And the OLIVET COMETS won a 52-49 defensive epic against the number 25 ADRIAN BULLDOGS

Babson College BeaversHOCKEY’S NUMBER ONE TAKES ANOTHER FALL  – The unranked BABSON COLLEGE BEAVERS played road warriors and brought down D3 hockey’s top-ranked NORWICH CADETS in an authoritative 4-1 outcome. This is just the 2nd loss for the Cadets this season. The Beavers improve to 9-3-2 with Norwich falling to 13-2.   ###   The number 15 STEVENS POINT POINTERS fell at the ST SCHOLASTICA SAINTS in a 4-3 Instant Classic   ###   The 14th ranked MANHATTANVILLE VALIANTS needed Overtime to do it but edged the homestanding CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS  3-2   ###   At number 3 the HOBART STATESMEN notched a 5-0 road shutout over the CURRY COLONELS   ###   … And the ELMIRA SOARING EAGLES lit up the scoreboard in a 9-4 win over the visiting MORRISVILLE STATE MUSTANGS.

GENESEOBLUEKNIGHTSTHE BLUE KNIGHTS AND BEACONS RULE THE WORLD – Two NCAA Division 3 hockey teams upset DIVISION ONE hockey teams again this weekend. The GENESEO STATE BLUE KNIGHTS hosted D1’s FRANKLIN PIERCE UNIVERSITY RAVENS and handed them a 4-1 smackdown    ###    Meanwhile the UMASS- BOSTON BEACONS, ranked at number 13 in Division 3, took it on the road and eviscerated the Division 1 SAINT MICHAEL’S COLLEGE PURPLE KNIGHTS by an unbelievable score of 10-3.

Wilmington Quakers logoCENTURY CLUB – The WILMINGTON QUAKERS defeated fellow Century Club members for the week the MT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS in a 108-102 orgy of scoring   ###   The BETHANY (WV) BISON topped the visiting WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON PRESIDENTS in a 109-72 spanking   ###   The PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS chewed up and spit out the CUMBERLAND BULLDOGS by an embarrassing score of 105-56   ###   … And the MARY HARDIN BAYLOR UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS kicked around the HARDIN SIMMONS COWBOYS in a 106-69 laugher.

The Grenadiers are a perfect 5-0 in conference play   ###   The TRINITY CHRISTIAN TROLLS won a road classic over the TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS by a score of 68-60   ###   The LA VERNE LEOPARDS eked out a 52-51 victory over the homestanding CAL LUTHERAN KINGSMEN   ###   … And the NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY GOTHIC KNIGHTS (love that name) edged the visiting NEW JERSEY LIONS in a 66-62 nailbiter.

The BREWTON-PARKER COLLEGE BARONS took the SOUTHERN POLY STATE RUNNING HORNETS into Double Overtime before emerging with an 82-78 win in this Southern States Athletic Conference classic   ###   The MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS went to THREE Overtime periods in their 111-109 defeat of the MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS   ###   The LSU-SHREVEPORT PILOTS notched a Double Overtime road win over the SOUTHWEST MUSTANGS  116-111   ###   The MARIAN (WI) SABRES edged the WISCONSIN LUTHERAN WARRIORS 75-71 in OT   ### … And the GETTYSBURG COLLEGE BULLETS logged an OT win over the MUHLENBERG MULES  84-78.

usao_drovers_150px3HOW ‘BOUT THEM DROVERS – The UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS are sitting at 8-4 right now and ranked at number 9 in the NAIA poll (number 8 in Balladeer’s Blog’s poll). Head Coach Brisco “County” McPherson is having another impressive year with the Drovers who started out the season at 6-0. After yesterday’s unfortunate 61-53 loss at 4th ranked Oklahoma Baptist USAO doesn’t play again until the 17th when they will host Wayland Baptist University.
