TALIA RAYFORD OF THE GILA MONSTERS NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to Women’s Basketball player Talia Rayford for being named Player of the Week for Eastern Arizona College. Talia averaged 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists in two games last week. The freshman comes to Eastern from Inglewood, California.
And one of the perks of being covered by Balladeer’s Blog is getting your Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname. So as of now, allow me to dub this outstanding student athlete Talia “The Hoops Monster” Rayford. I thought about spelling it “Goops Monster” like in Gila Monster, but I didn’t want bombarded with e-mails from people telling me they didn’t get it.

THE 32 MOST UNIQUE TEAM NAMES IN DIVISION 1 COLLEGE SPORTS

Balladeer’s Blog
Before any of my regular readers get upset let me point out right off the bat that I am NOT going to start covering Division 1 sports on a regular basis. This will simply be a quick list of the most unique nicknames for D1 teams outside of the 120 schools that count as 1A (FBS for you spineless conformists) for football. There’s no contest this time and I won’t bother with pertinent details about the schools. I’ll just feature the logos and my pithy comments. Since this is the only time I’ll deal with Division 1 I’m doing more than 20 to get all the unique names in. And by unique I mean a name not shared by a team in one of the divisions I cover, hence no UTSA Roadrunners or Campbell Camels, etc.

32. SAINT FRANCIS (PA) RED FLASH – CONFERENCE AFFILIATION – THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE – The name and logo can’t help but make you think of the superhero The Flash from DC Comics which lends the nickname a certain kind of Neo-Nerd Chic. Sort of like the Blue Streaks from a few divisions down in the college sports world. Plus this school plays football, always a plus with me. Continue reading

As usual readers will have the next 20 days to e-mail me with their votes for which team they feel has the coolest name. I can be reached at Thtcom15@aol.com .
20. OHIO STATE-MARION SCARLET WAVE
Location: Marion, OH
Comment: The Scarlet Wave is a nickname every bit as cool as The Crimson Tide and The Green Wave. You can’t go wrong with names like this for sports teams as far as I’m concerned and I’ve been saying for years that when Syracuse changed their team’s names from The Orangemen to The Orange that they’d have been better off going with Continue reading
