FOUR MORE BAD MOVIES

Balladeer’s Blog takes a look at four more neglected bad movies.

Secret of Dorian GrayTHE SECRET OF DORIAN GRAY (1970) – A terrific idea was blown in this hilariously flawed attempt to adapt Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray to swinging 60’s London. Helmut Berger, who was sort of a Nordic Michael York back when this movie was made stars as our title hero whose portrait begins to reflect all the physical and spiritual wear and tear of Dorian’s hedonistic lifestyle, thus preserving his young, beautiful physical form.

It also prevents Dorian’s body from aging, which has always made me think this adaptation might have worked better as a musical comedy in the 1980’s with Dorian a Mick Jagger-type rocker starting out in the 60’s but retaining his appeal two decades later. The contrast between the 60’s and 80’s cultural mindset would have provided plenty of comic and not-so-comic material. Continue reading

ISIS THREATENS MORE ATTACKS IN THE WEST: WILL LIBERALS SAY WE SHOULD JUST WITHDRAW FROM OUR OWN NATIONS, TOO?

IslamofascismIt’s no secret that the 1960’s generation of American Liberals are the most cowardly hypocrites in the world at this particular point in history. In addition their worldview is over FIVE DECADES OUT OF DATE. 1960’s Liberals are incapable of comprehending a war in which their incessant cry of “Withdraw! Withdraw! Withdraw!” is not the ultimate solution. After all, they feel, withdrawal worked to end the Vietnam War so to them that means withdrawal is THE solution to all conflicts. Unfortunately for that most apt pupil of 1960’s Liberals – Barack Obama – his premature withdrawal from Iraq has spawned ISIS.

“The Most Self-Aggrandizing Generation” of pretentious Liberal asses cannot get their minds around the fact that Muslim fanatics are an entirely different foe than the Viet Cong. The Viet Cong did not roam the globe derailing trains, beheading people, blowing them up or piloting planes into the sides of buildings. I know that 1960’s generation Liberals are incapable of growing up or realizing that the world has moved on but other generations need to finally grasp the fact that the conflict between the homophobic and misogynistic forces of Islam and the civilized world with all its flaws IS PROFOUNDLY DIFFERENT FROM THE VIETNAM WAR.

Not every war is the Vietnam War.

Not every war is the Vietnam War.

The narcissism of 1960’s Liberals has gone into overdrive since September 11th, 2o01 as they try to force the rest of the world to pretend that this  conflict is the fault of “Western Imperialism”. The immature fools whose minds are trapped in 1967 always ignore Muslim Imperialism – the blood-soaked way it spread throughout the Middle East, Africa, much of Asia and various island nations. At any rate ISIS is now vowing to launch more attacks in Western nations, further proof that THIS IS A FOE YOU CANNOT WITHDRAW FROM – YOU HAVE TO FIGHT THEM. We WERE fighting them over there. Thanks to the mindless 1960’s Liberal attitude of “Withdraw, Withdraw, Withdraw”, we will now be fighting them OVER HERE at an ever-increasing rate.   Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM NOVEMBER 15th

* HEADLINES *

Doane College helmetNUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – The NAIA’s DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS welcomed the number one team in the nation – the MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS – to Crete, NE on a cold and snowy Saturday. The Tigers trailed the storied Mustangs 27-7 after 1 Quarter of play but Coach Matt Franzen kept his team calm and focused, guiding them to a 27-27 tie at Halftime. In the 3rd Quarter Doane took a 41-27 lead that had the Morningside faithful chewing their nails but the Mustangs fought back to retake the lead 48-41 with just 2:07 left to play in the 4th.

Soon, on 4th and 4 from the Morningside 13 with 21 seconds on the clock QB Brandon Stuart connected with Nick Reed for a TD to pull within 48-47. From there Doane went for the win on a 2 point Conversion which saw Stuart throw to Holden Wetzler in the End Zone for a 49-48 upset that shocked the nation!

Wesley WolverinesWESLEY FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT – The NCAA Division Three’s 4th ranked WESLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES showed the kind of courage Mt Union NEVER shows, taking it on the road against Division ONE’s Charlotte Forty-Niners. The Wolverines nearly pulled off the upset as it turned out. A 14-14 1st Quarter tie became a 28-24 lead for Charlotte by the Half. Both teams exchanged blows nearly evenly in the 2nd Half with Wesley losing by just 38-33.   Continue reading

PULP HERO G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES: STORIES SIXTY-SEVEN TO SIXTY-NINE

G-8 battles Doktor Krueger, Steel Mask and the Raven in one epic story.

G-8 battles Doktor Krueger, Steel Mask and the Raven in one epic story.

Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the neglected Pulp Hero G-8. This is a story-by- story look at the adventures of this World War One American fighter pilot who – along with his two wingmen the Battle Aces – took on various supernatural and super- scientific menaces thrown at the Allied Powers by the Central Powers of Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Muslim Turks.

G-8 was created by Robert J Hogan in 1933 when World War One was still being called simply the World War or the Great War. Over the next eleven years Hogan wrote 110 stories featuring the adventures of G-8, the street-smart pug Nippy Weston and the brawny giant Bull Martin. The regular cast was rounded out by our hero’s archenemy Doktor Krueger, by Battle, G-8’s British manservant and by our hero’s girlfriend R-1: an American spy/ nurse whose real name, like G-8’s was never revealed.

Death Rides the Last Patrol67. DEATH RIDES THE LAST PATROL (April 1939) – In a case of one of those print oddities that stamp collectors and Pulp fans love the inside title of this adventure appears as Death Flies the Last Patrol.

The Raven returns for another clash with G-8 and his Battle Aces! The man with coal-black skin is still out for revenge on our hero, the flying ace who shot down and killed the Raven’s brother. Helping the Central Powers win the war would just be a fringe benefit.

Von Ravenfeld’s experiments on the POW human guinea pigs in his castle’s dungeon laboratory have yielded a paralyzing gas. The villain takes to the skies intent on spraying Allied pilots and the Allied ground troops below, paralyzing them and leaving them helpless before the armies of the Central Powers!
