PULP HERO G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES: STORIES FORTY-NINE TO FIFTY-ONE

MORE PARANORMAL ADVENTURES WITH G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES

MORE PARANORMAL ADVENTURES WITH G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES

Balladeer’s Blog resumes its exam-ination of the neglected Pulp Hero G-8. This is a story-by- story look at the adventures of this World War One American fighter pilot who – along with his two wingmen the Battle Aces – took on various supernatural and super- scientific menaces thrown at the Allied Powers by the Central Powers of Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Muslim Turks.

G-8 was created by Robert J Hogan in 1933 when World War One was still being called simply the World War or the Great War. Over the next eleven years Hogan wrote 110 stories featuring the adventures of G-8, the street-smart pug Nippy Weston and the brawny giant Bull Martin. The regular cast was rounded out by our hero’s archenemy Doktor Krueger, by Battle, G-8’s British manservant and by our hero’s girlfriend R-1: an American spy/ nurse whose real name, like G-8’s was never revealed.

Hand of Steel49. THE HAND OF STEEL (October 1937) – This story introduces another of G-8’s Rogue’s Gallery of recurring foes – the madman called Goulon. Once a skilled flying ace for Germany in the Red Baron’s Flying Circus Goulon was eventually shot down, his crash landing resulting in his left leg and left foot being permanently bent and twisted.

Now called “the cripple of Hartsburg” – and by his OWN side (now that’s cold) Goulon’s face was also badly burned in the crash (shades of G-8’s foe Steel Mask) and the burned skin was removed, leaving his face resembling a skull with a perpetually opened mouth. To top it all off the crash also caused his left hand to be replaced by a steel claw. Talk about a bad day! Goulon blames the Allies for his condition and spends the rest of the war coming up with super-scientific inventions to help the Central Powers win.

HONG KONG: THEIR STRUGGLE IS THE SAME AS OURS

The symbols of the two corrupt "royal houses" who unconstitutionally rule America.

The symbols of the two corrupt “royal houses” who unconstitutionally rule America.

At the heart of the recent protests in Hong Kong is the fact that the Chinese government was going back on their promise to allow the citizens of Hong Kong to vote for THEIR OWN candidates to govern them. The Chinese government tried to interpose a “panel” that would select which candidates the people of Hong Kong were allowed to choose from.

Ironically, we supposedly free people here in the U.S. have yet to show as much spirit in rebelling against the Democratic and Republican Parties, those rival gangs of white-collar criminals who have become the not-so- figurative “panel” that dictates which candidates the rest of us get to vote on.

As always I will point out what should not need pointing out: the fact that the Democratic and Republican Parties are not mentioned anywhere in the Constitution. Yet these two corrupt organizations have hijacked the nation’s electoral apparatus. Continue reading

THE RED SPECTRE (1907): TEN MINUTE SILENT HORROR FILM

The Red Spectre with the bottled souls of his victims.

The Red Spectre with the bottled souls of his victims.

THE RED SPECTRE (1907) – 9-10 minute Pathe production which features beautifully rendered red tinting. The central figure is a demon in the depths of Hell clad in a red cape plus skull makeup and skeletal central costume.

The Red Spectre toys with the captive souls of various women until an angel shows up to end his evil deeds and do battle with him. The angel is played by a woman with very short hair so it may have been meant to be a little boy angel. Continue reading

GOTHIC HORROR: THREE NEGLECTED NOVELS

HALLOWEEN MONTH IS HERE! In addition to all my usual blog posts I will also be throwing in my looks at forgotten or neglected works of horror – either novels, movies, television shows, even operas (yes, operas). To kick off this fun month at Balladeer’s Blog here is my look at three seriously neglected Gothic horror novels of the  late 1700s and the 1800s. Everybody remembers the big names like Dracula and Frankenstein but I want to introduce readers to some forgotten gems of Gothic horror.

Oakendale AbbeyTHE HORRORS OF OAKENDALE ABBEY (1797) – The author of this unjustly forgotten work is known only as “Mrs Carver” but is often speculated to be a man with the leading candidate being Sir Anthony Carlisle. The tale centers around the beautiful (of course)  and strong-willed (ditto) Laura, a refugee from the Reign of Terror following the French Revolution.

When Laura is reluctant to accomodate the less-than-selfless motives of her British patron Lord Oakendale he has her and a devoted maid banished to the long-abandoned Oakendale Abbey. The Abbey is believed to be haunted, a reputation enhanced by the repeated disappearances of people who venture into its sinister interior. Shortly after arriving in the mysterious decaying building Laura discovers a Continue reading
