ANCIENT GREEK COMEDIES: PHILYLLIUS

Welcome to Balladeer’s Blog’s latest look at ancient Greek comedy. In previous posts I examined 8 individual comedies from classical Athens. Since so many of the Attic Old Comedies survive in very fragmentary form I will periodically be dealing with the plays too fragmentary for full-length reviews in the manner laid out in this blog post.

Instead of examining individual comedies in these posts, I will focus on those ancient Greek comedians whose entire corpus is very, very fragmentary, touching briefly on all of their known works. For background info on ancient Greek comedy plus my previous reviews click here: https://glitternight.com/ancient-greek-comedies/

PHILYLLIUS – This comic poet’s career seems to have spanned approximately from the 410’s BCE to 390 BCE. One of his comedies won 1st prize at a Lenaea festival in the 390’s and he won 1st prize at an unknown Dionysia. His fellow comedian Strattis credited him with being the first Attic Old Comic to use real torches on stage.

My favorite random line from his fragments: “The most important element of health is to breathe clean and unsullied air.”

I. HERAKLES – This comedy combined mythological burlesque with a comical look at the institution of phratries in ancient Greece. Phratries were the forerunner of and partial inspiration for college fraternities and sororities as well as Continue reading

WOMEN’S SPORTS FANS REJOICE: THE WNBA IS NOW AT BALLADEER’S BLOG

I’ve always felt the Women’s National Basketball Association deserves more attention than it tends to get. Since the bulk of their season corresponds to the summer months when there are no college sports being played I decided they would be a perfect fit for Balladeer’s Blog.

If there is enough interest in these posts I’ll continue my WNBA coverage. First off, a look at the current standings and a shoutout to the Minnesota Lynx, who are the sole remaining undefeated team this season.

THE TOP TWELVE DEITIES IN CHOCTAW MYTHOLOGY

The belief systems of the indigenous people of the continental United States often get twisted through the same condescending prism as the myths of the Inuit. Just as Balladeer’s Blog previously gave proper due to the deities of those people of the far north, this time around I hope to do the same with the figures from Choctaw mythology.

Much material about Native American mythology still reflects the distortions of the Christian missionaries who did some of the first work in recording the oral traditions of native mythology and who imposed their own editorial slant on those belief systems. In their efforts to guide the Choctaws and other peoples away from what the missionaries saw as “pagan belief systems” an artificial elevation of one “Great Spirit” figure, (analogous to the missionaries’ monotheistic “God” ) took place. An equally artificial de-emphasis on the divinity of the other figures in those belief systems took place, again accomodating the prejudices of the white recorders of the myths without regard to objectivity.

Ironically, politically correct white scholars often wind up reinforcing these distortions of Native American mythology through the mistaken notion that the indigenous peoples originally presented their belief systems in this way. Those scholars often believe it is “Eurocentric” to look for pantheons in the Americas, unaware that it is the “Great Spirit” approach that is really the white distortion, and not the original reflection of indigenous beliefs. See the list of source books on my Inuit Myth page for some excellent research guides in tracing this unfortunate twisting of Native American belief systems.

As with all belief systems there are many alternate versions of these myths. MY SOURCE BOOKS ARE LISTED IN THE COMMENTS.

11 and 12. HELOHA AND MELATHA – The Choctaw version of the  Thunderbirds. The chief deity Nanishta (or in some versions the sun god Hashtali since he and Nanishta are often conflated in the myths) assigned these two gigantic, intelligent birds the task of Continue reading

FINAL COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES: 2012

Yesterday the NAIA World Series came to a close with the Tennessee Wesleyan College Bulldogs (logo at left) winning the championship game against the Rogers State University Hillcats. The final score was 10-6 but the Hillcats were leading 6-5 as late as the 8th inning. It’s the first national championship for TWC. Meanwhile, RSU made quite an impression on their first trip to the World Series.

The remaining 3 divisions of college sports covered here at Balladeer’s Blog play their World Series championship games today. The NCAA Division 2 game will be played at 7pm ET and pits the Delta State University Statesmen against the West Chester Golden Rams. The NJCAA1 game throws out its first pitch at 9pm ET and finds the storied Iowa Western Reivers taking on the San Jacinto College Gators. At 8pm ET the LSU- Eunice Bengals battle the defending champs, the Western Oklahoma State Pioneers in the NJCAA2 title matchup.

JUNE 1ST COLLEGE WORLD SERIES RESULTS: NAIA, D2 AND NJCAA

Tonight will see a new College World Series champion crowned in the NAIA (logo at left). The Cinderella team, the 9th-seeded Rogers State University Hillcats never met a team they didn’t upset in their 1st year making it all the way to the NAIA World Series. Their opponents will be the 4th-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan College Bulldogs who last night pulled off some upset magic of their own by toppling the top seeds in the Series, the LSU-Shreveport Pilots.

The NAIA’s championship game gets underway at 9:30pm ET. Keep checking back here at Balladeer’s Blog for results in that game plus College World Series results in the NJCAA and NCAA Division 2 as well.

FRONTIERADO RECIPE: TUMBLEWEED PIZZA

As an early Frontierado gift to my readers here is my personal recipe for Tumbleweed Pizza, the perfect snack to go with Silverado and whatever second Western you watch on the day of Frontierado itself, which this year falls on Friday, August 3rd.

Start with a few extra-large tortilla shells or round pita shells. Spread tomato paste and/or sauce around them, leaving as much crust room as you prefer. Spread shredded pepperjack cheese all over each shell until you completely cover the  tomato paste/sauce. Add small slices of Nopolito Cactus (it will Continue reading
