NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 6TH, 2012

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – For the second week in a row the number 2 team in the NCAA Division 2 rankings has suffered an upset. The FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS (helmet at left) came into yesterday’s game unranked and faced with the daunting task of competing with the most famous football dynasty in D2 history – the 2nd ranked GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS. The Bulldogs ignored all the naysayers and delivered a 40-24 spanking to the Lakers in their own house.

SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY RULES THE WORLD – Just like during last season each Saturday brings us at least one NAIA team upsetting an NCAA Division 2 team. This week’s team to embrace that NAIA tradition was the SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES, who took it on the road and singed the feathers off the QUINCY HAWKS by a score of 34-18. For newbies to these divisions this is like when a 1AA team upsets a 1A team. (Or an FCS team upsets an FBS team if you’re a spineless conformist.)

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) – The TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS hosted the 20th ranked KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES and defeated them in a 56-31 manhandling.   ###   The number 22 MENLO OAKS fell at home to the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL WARRIORS in a nailbiting 19-14 battle which saw an east coast team bearding a west coast team in its own den.   ###   … And the unranked SOUTHERN OREGON RAIDERS dismembered the (24) EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS in a 68-22 laugher.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The WAYNE STATE WARRIORS (helmet at left) brought down the visiting number 12 team, the HILLSDALE CHARGERS, in a 24-21 Instant Classic. Who’s going to break the news to Michael Medved?   ###   The (23) UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS were on the road against the WINONA STATE WARRIORS and lost in a 10-9 defensive epic.   ###   … And the unranked EAST STROUDSBURG WARRIORS upset the 24th ranked WEST CHESTER GOLDEN RAMS by a Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2012

NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – In the most memorable bit of cougar on cougar violence since the days of the Joan Collins/ Linda Evans catfights on Dynasty the NAIA’s top ranked defending champs, the ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS were upset at home by the number 10 ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS.

St Francis Head Coach Kevin Donley recently became the NAIA’s leader in total coaching wins and this sweet upset is also another victory adding to the new record he’s setting. Donley’s Cougars brought down Chicago’s Cougars by a score of 25-13.

############ Every week at LEAST one NAIA team upsets an NCAA Division 2 team. This week the NAIA’s LANGSTON LIONS toppled D2’s homestanding SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM in a 17-14 blockbuster! ##########

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – Meanwhile, over in NCAA Division 2, the 2nd ranked (but not in Balladeer’s Blog’s rankings) UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AT DULUTH BULLDOGS were toppled by the homestanding SAINT CLOUD STATE HUSKIES.

The unranked Huskies (helmet at left) snuck up on UMD and pulled the rug out from under them in a 51-49 shootout for the ages.

HISTORY FOR CRONIN AND COMPANY – Coach Donley at Saint Francis isn’t the only coach marking a milestone this season. Over with the NAIA’s number 3 team, the GEORGETOWN (KY) TIGERS, their Head Coach Bill Cronin marked his 150th career win with a 63-21 dismemberment of the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS. In a rarity these days a large chunk of Cronin’s coaching staff were around for all 150 wins – Steve Hill, Craig Mullins, Bruce Owens and Marty Park also basked in the glory of yesterday’s accomplishment.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS came into yesterday’s game unranked but rose up to defeat the number 6 BENEDICTINE RAVENS in a 54-44 homestand that treated the Evangel faithful to their team’s signature win of the 2012 season thus far.   ###   The (18) GRAND VIEW VIKINGS pulled off a road upset of the 9th- ranked ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES by a score of 29-26 in Double Overtime.   ###   The MONTANA WESTERN BULLDOGS joined the Vikings in upsetting a ranked team in their own house by bringing down the number 14 EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS in a Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2012

GRIDIRON HISTORY – The NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) witnessed a new record for career football wins!

Kevin Donley, Head Coach of the ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS (helmet at left) has broken the 256 win tie he held with Frosty Westering and Hank Biesiot. Donley’s 257th win came in an unbelievable 76-14 annihilation of the visiting CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS, who are in just their 2nd year of intercollegiate football.

THE CONCORDIA HORNETS RULE THE WORLD – A few weeks ago the CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS upset NCAA Division ONE’S Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.

Yesterday the Hornets played giant killers again, taking it on the road and bringing down the Division TWO team the CLARK ATLANTA PANTHERS. 22-17 was the final score in this 2nd milestone upset of the 2012 season for the team from Selma.

NUMBER 7 TAKES A FALL – The North Coast Athletic Conference saw a massive upset yesterday.

The ALLEGHENY GATORS came in unranked against the 7th- ranked WABASH LITTLE GIANTS. The Wabash home crowd was shocked at the 17-17 tie to end regulation and was positively floored by the final result! A field goal and a defensive stop in Overtime gave the Gators a well-earned 20-17 victory!

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – Ya call THIS an upset? The CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS are the most dominant football dynasty in NAIA history but because they blew one early game this year the pollsters paniced and took them from number 2 to the double digits. Never mind the fact that after last year’s September loss CC still made it to the championship game, the Hellions from Helena were dropped much too far and came into yesterday’s game ranked 11th. The number 8 EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS (the team that handed CC last season’s September loss, ironically enough) came to town and were handily beaten 28-7. This quasi- upset was the only upset in the NAIA rankings yesterday.

TOP 25 UPSETS – D2 – The UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (their spelling, not mine) hosted the unlucky number 13 WASHBURN ICHABODS yesterday and handed them a 35-20 loss.   ###   Meanwhile the 14th- ranked ABILENE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS were also on the road and found themselves on a the losing end of Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ACTION: SEPTEMBER 22ND

The NAIA’s 2nd ranked Marian University Knights welcome the number 15 Grand View Vikings today while the defending champion St Xavier University Cougars, in the top spot, are on the road against the Trinity International University Trojans.

In the ongoing race for the most wins in NAIA college football history, Keven Donley, Head Coach of the (12) St Francis (IN) Cougars will try to break his tie with Hank Biesiot of the Dickinson State Blue Hawks at 256 wins. Donley’s team  hosts the winless Concordia (MI) Cardinals so he has a reasonable shot at making today the day. Coach Beez’s Blue Hawks are on the road against the Southern Oregon Raiders and with the way DSU has been struggling the past few seasons Hank’s win total may be standing still today.

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2012

COACH BEEZ WINS THE RACE TO 256 WINS – Congratulations to Hank Biesiot, the Head Coach of the DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY BLUE HAWKS (helmet at left) for notching a new career wins record in NAIA college football! Coach Beez was tied at 255 victories with the retired Frosty Westering and the still- active Kevin Donley of the ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS.

Coach Biesiot has a definite sense of the dramatic and logged the 256th triumph in a 21-20 nailbiter against the visiting MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY- NORTHERN LIGHTS.

NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – The unranked BUFFALO STATE BENGALS accomplished the monumental task of handing a home defeat to the top-ranked defending champions of NCAA Division 3 football – the WHITEWATER WARHAWKS.

Fans stunned by the half-time score of a meager 3-0 in favor of UWW had that shock compounded by the 7-6 final score! The Bengals scored the winning touchdown with just 3.2 seconds left in the game. The loss snaps the 46 game winning streak the Warhawks had compiled. This result has seismic implications for the D3 picture going forward this season.

THE JIMMIES, THE EAGLES, THE FALCONS AND THE TIGERS RULE THE WORLD – Four NAIA teams kept alive their weekly tradition of upsetting NCAA Division TWO teams. – The JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES (helmet at left) edged the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS in a 17-14 Instant Classic. A Ryan Benke field goal in OT won the game.   ###   The ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES vanquished the ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE PUMAS  40-35.   ###   The FRIENDS FALCONS got in on the fun and beat the SOUTHERN NAZARENE CRIMSON STORM  17-7.   ###   Meanwhile, the EDWARD WATERS TIGERS proved the NAIA can upset D2 on the road as well as at home. The Tigers survived a very tough 42-36 contest against the LIVINGSTONE BLUE BEARS.  ###   ( Hey, D3! How come YOUR teams don’t beat D2 teams every week like the NAIA does? Had to be asked given the intense rivalry between the NAIA and NCAA Division 3)

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – After last week’s monumental toppling of the number 2 team in the rankings this week was very mild, featuring just one minor upset in the rankings. That upset was provided by the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

The 17th ranked NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE RED RAIDERS brought down the number 16 DOANE TIGERS, doubling up on them 28-14.

TOP 25 UPSETS – D2 – The UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY OILERS went on the road and played Red Adair by dousing the 9th ranked SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS in a 29-27 nailbiter.   ###   The unlucky number 13 TEXAS A&M- KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS fell on the road to the Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ACTION: SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2012

The NAIA’s top-ranked defending champions, the Saint Xavier University Cougars (logo at right) are hosting the Langston Lions today. As for clashes between two ranked teams today the NAIA gives us the number 3 Georgetown (KY) Tigers on the road against the (24) Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders, the 9th ranked Saint Ambrose University Fighting Bees hosting the number 23 Taylor Trojans, the (19) Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears traveling to face the (12) CC Fighting Saints and the (17) Northwestern (IA) Red Raiders welcoming the (16) Doane Tigers.

The 20th ranked Montana Tech Orediggers, who had THE upset of last weekend by bringing down then- number 2 Carroll College, are on the road facing Frontier Conference rivals the Montana Western Bulldogs. Meanwhile history may be made today as Coach Hank Biesiot of the Dickinson State Blue Hawks goes for win number 256 against the MSU- Northern Lights. Coach Beez is tied at 255 wins with the retired Frosty Westering and Coach Kevin Donley of the St Francis (IN) Cougars. Donley’s boys are off today, so since the 0-2 Blue Hawks host the 0-2 Lights this may be the struggling Biesiot’s best chance to pull ahead of Donley for total career wins in the NAIA … at least for a week.

All this plus dozens of matchups in NCAA Divisions 2 and 3 plus the NJCAA and CCCAA. As always Balladeer’s Blog will Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2012

HISTORY ON HOLD – The 20th- ranked ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES were on the road against the (6) ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS, whose Head Coach Kevin Donley was going for the all-time NAIA wins record.

Donley will stay tied with Hank Biesiot and Frosty Westering at 255 wins for at least one more week. The Fighting Bees (love that name) out of Davenport, IA walked away with the victory in this 15-14 Instant Classic.

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL! – The unranked MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS (helmet at left) shocked the nation yesterday by rising up to defeat the 2nd ranked CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS!

And this was no flukish, last- minute, hold on by the seat of their pants upset, either! The Orediggers (love that name, too) won this victory over the NAIA’s most famous football dynasty by an impressive 37-20.

LENOIR- RHYNE RULES THE WORLD – The LENOIR- RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS (helmet at left) upset the DIVISION ONE team the DAVIDSON WILDCATS.

The Bears logged their first win of the 2012 season in this milestone home stand. They mauled the Wildcats and toyed with them at will in this 20-2 rout that the Lenoir- Rhyne faithful will be boasting about for some time to come.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The 9th- ranked MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS (helmet at left) upset the (5) MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS in their own house in a commanding 41-7 butt-kicking.  ###  The unranked KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES brought down the visiting number 11 team, the OTTAWA (KS) UNIVERSITY BRAVES in a 31-28 Instant Classic.  ###  The BACONE WARRIORS improved to 2-1 with a 19-0 road win over the (22) LANGSTON LIONS.  ###  … and the ever-tough MCPHERSON BULLDOGS brought down the 24th- ranked BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES 14-0.

TOP 25 UPSETS – D2 – The CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES stunned perennial D2 football powers the (3) NORTHWEST MISSOURI BEARCATS by a score of 31-21.  ###  The TARLETON STATE TEXANS toppled the number 5 MIDWESTERN STATE MUSTANGS in a 20-17 game for the ages.  ###  The 23rd- ranked TAMK JAVELINAS (where NFL Hall of Famer Darrel Green played his college ball) notched a road upset over the Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2012

FROSTING FROSTY’S SHORTS – Kevin Donley, the Head Coach of the (6) ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS (helmet at left) tied the legendary Frosty Westering for the most wins in NAIA college football at 256.

The victory came in yet another NAIA victory over an NCAA Division 3 team as the Cougars defeated the STEVENS POINT POINTERS  39-31.

BIG RIVER BOWL – The NAIA’s football double-header event for the holiday weekend featured three ranked teams in action.

In the first game the (22) CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS (helmet at left) routed the KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES by a score of 31-10. Game Two presented the spectacle of the (3) MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS (2011 semi- finalists) defeating the (11) BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS, with the only disappointing element being the fact that the game was called because of lightning after 3 quarters. The Knights won 31-7 and start the season at 2-0.

THE CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS RULE THE WORLD – While mentioning NAIA football let me also point out that the CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS (U) brought down DIVISION ONE’S MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE DELTA DEVILS, the alma mater of THE Jerry Rice. The Hornets emerged with a 20-19 win in this perfect example of college teams with heart toppling Division One schools with their enormous budgets.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – This Labor Day Saturday saw just one upset in the NAIA rankings.

The PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS took it on the road and toppled the 25th- ranked CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS in a 14-7 epic that played as a celebration of Old School smash-mouth football with the defenses making the offenses pay for every yard and every point.

TOP 25 UPSETS – D3 – The ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS, the football pride of Glassboro, NJ, were unranked but upset the 9th- ranked DELAWARE VALLEY AGGIES by an Continue reading
