NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 6TH, 2012

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – For the second week in a row the number 2 team in the NCAA Division 2 rankings has suffered an upset. The FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS (helmet at left) came into yesterday’s game unranked and faced with the daunting task of competing with the most famous football dynasty in D2 history – the 2nd ranked GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS. The Bulldogs ignored all the naysayers and delivered a 40-24 spanking to the Lakers in their own house.

SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY RULES THE WORLD – Just like during last season each Saturday brings us at least one NAIA team upsetting an NCAA Division 2 team. This week’s team to embrace that NAIA tradition was the SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES, who took it on the road and singed the feathers off the QUINCY HAWKS by a score of 34-18. For newbies to these divisions this is like when a 1AA team upsets a 1A team. (Or an FCS team upsets an FBS team if you’re a spineless conformist.)

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) – The TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS hosted the 20th ranked KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES and defeated them in a 56-31 manhandling.   ###   The number 22 MENLO OAKS fell at home to the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL WARRIORS in a nailbiting 19-14 battle which saw an east coast team bearding a west coast team in its own den.   ###   … And the unranked SOUTHERN OREGON RAIDERS dismembered the (24) EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS in a 68-22 laugher.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The WAYNE STATE WARRIORS (helmet at left) brought down the visiting number 12 team, the HILLSDALE CHARGERS, in a 24-21 Instant Classic. Who’s going to break the news to Michael Medved?   ###   The (23) UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS were on the road against the WINONA STATE WARRIORS and lost in a 10-9 defensive epic.   ###   … And the unranked EAST STROUDSBURG WARRIORS upset the 24th ranked WEST CHESTER GOLDEN RAMS by a score of 35-28.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 3 – Believe it or not yesterday saw absolutely no upsets of a ranked D3 team. A couple programs did have close shaves, however.

The CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD COBBERS were on the road against the 10th ranked BETHEL (MN) ROYALS and just barely fell in a 15-14 heartbreaker.   ###   … And the number 16 WABASH LITTLE GIANTS survived a scare at the unranked WITTENBERG TIGERS by a score of 27-24.

SPOILED HOMECOMINGS – The LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY AT BELLEVILLE LYNX (helmet at left) are in just their very first year of intercollegiate football but already notched their inaugural season’s FOURTH victory by ruining Homecoming for the HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY INDIANS in a 60-20 obliteration.   ###   The (13) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS mined all the fun out of the DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS’ festivities with their 42-6 whupping of Hank Biesiot’s boys.   ###   … And the CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS lifted their legs and pissed all over Homecoming for the BRIAR CLIFF CHARGERS by a score of 45-12.

HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON? – The game that wins this week’s designation as the Marathon Game of the Week is the bout between the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS and the SIENA HEIGHTS SAINTS. The Tigers won a 20-14 FOUR OVERTIME grudge match against the Saints, who were playing in their 3rd multiple overtime game of the season.   ###   Meanwhile, in a Triple Overtime affair the BLUFFTON BEAVERS took down the homestanding ROSE-HULMAN ENGINEERS by a score of 37-34.

ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The BUTLER (KS) GRIZZLIES lead off this category after yesterday’s 84-13 mauling of the GARDEN CITY BRONCBUSTERS.   ###   The HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY REDDIES annihilated the UAM BOLL WEEVILS 71-0.   ###   The SUL ROSS STATE LOBOS embarrassed the MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CHOCTAWS by a score of 75-42.   ###   The NEW HAVEN CHARGERS kicked apart the ASSUMPTION GREYHOUNDS to the tune of 65-7.   ###  The IOWA WESTERN REIVERS keelhauled the ARKANSAS BAPTIST COLLEGE BUFFALOES by a brutal 81-14   ###   … And the HUTCHINSON BLUE DRAGONS incinerated the AFP CADETS 66-7.

CLOSE CALL – D2’s 3rd-ranked COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES (helmet at left) have emerged as a football power in recent years and had a very close call yesterday against the storied CHADRON STATE EAGLES program. Regulation ended with a 38-38 tie but luckily the Thunder Wolves (how can you not love that name) preserved their high ranking – and maybe their season – with a 45-38 victory in the overtime session.

SIXTY-NINE – In a battle of teams sporting cool variants of Hawk names the COE KOHAWKS plucked all the feathers off the LORAS DUHAWKS by a score of 69-7.   ###   Meanwhile the ASA COLLEGE AVENGERS, fresh off their trouncing of the WIDENER PRIDE last weekend, delivered another vicious smackdown – this time to the DEAN COLLEGE BULLDOGS by a score of 69-14.

DEDICATE THIS! – The (9) UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS (helmet at left) continue their memorable season, this time marring the dedication of Faulkner Stadium for the (23) FAULKNER EAGLES. The game was a tussle that everyone present will be telling their grandchildren about and in the end the Patriots emerged with a 31-27 victory that will occupy a bittersweet spot in the Faulkner program’s own annals.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – D2 – The ADAMS STATE GRIZZLIES traveled to face the BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS and won a 20-17 gridiron masterpiece.   ###   The EMPORIA STATE HORNETS stung the homestanding SOUTHWEST BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BEARCATS by a score of 19-15.   ###   … And the DELTA STATE STATESMEN vanquished the TARLETON STATE TEXANS 38-35 in their own house.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – D3 – The CARLETON KNIGHTS survived a 21-20 invasion from the MACALESTER SCOTS.   ###   The CENTRE COLONELS won a battle of bruising defenses with the SEWANEE TIGERS by a score of 10-7.   ###   The KNOX PRAIRIE FIRE won a 35-33 homestand against the BELOIT BUCCANEERS.   ###   … And the BOWDOIN POLAR BEARS won a slug-fest with the TUFTS JUMBOS by a score of 17-10.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – NJCAA – The KILGORE COLLEGE RANGERS (helmet at left) were at the BLINN COLLEGE BUCCANEERS and eked out a 28-27 victory.   ###   The EASTERN ARIZONA COLLEGE GILA MONSTERS lost on the road to the GLENDALE (AZ) GAUCHOS by a score of 14-7.   ###   … And on Thursday night the NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI TIGERS handed the COAHOMA TIGERS a 21-17 loss in a real catfight.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – CCCAA – The ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE MARAUDERS wound up on the losing end of a 62-61 Double Overtime affair against the COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS COUGARS.   ###   The COLLEGE OF THE DESERT ROAD RUNNERS notched a road win over the ORANGE COAST PIRATES  52-50.   ###   … And the PASADENA LANCERS defeated the homestanding GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS by a score of 17-9.

ALL-NAME GAMES – The ROCKFORD REGENTS (helmet at left) suffered a 31-7 loss to the LAKELAND MUSKIES.   ###   The LAKE FOREST FORESTERS defeated the ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUE BOYS by a score of 35-28.   ###   The PACIFIC BOXERS crushed the PUGET SOUND UNIVERSITY LOGGERS  62-21.   ###   … And the ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS won a 45-38 homestand against the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA SAVAGE STORM.
