MARDI GRAS MASSACRE – (1978)

Mardi Gras MassacreMARDI GRAS MASSACRE (1978) – Category: A neglected Bad Movie classic, but its hard-core gore will prevent it from ever having a Plan 9-sized cult following

It takes a twisted sort of genius to make multiple disembowelment murders look boring, but that’s exactly what Jack Weis accomplishes in Mardi Gras Massacre! Today may be Fat Tuesday, but let’s rechristen it “Splat Tuesday” in honor of this late 70’s splatterfest.

The actual “massacre” part of this movie is an incredible disappointment. An insane, hate-filled man with a Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE: MARDI GRAS MASSACRE (1978)

The actual “massacre” part of this movie is an incredible disappointment. An insane, hate-filled man with a knife – no, not Jim Bowie (rimshot) – is roaming around New Orleans during Mardi Gras targeting prostitutes as sacrificial offerings to the Aztec deities he worships. That sounds promising for a horror film but the disembowelment ritual is reenacted word for word and movement for movement for EACH VICTIM! There is no variation and also no suspense because after the first killing we know exactly how all the subsequent sacrifices will play out. The only chills come from listening to the awful disco music that plays during the Continue reading

UNBEATEN GOLD RUSH RISE TO NUMBER 9

NEW ORLEANS — Unbeaten Xavier University of Louisiana moved from 10th to ninth in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 on Monday.
It’s the highest rank for the XU men since Feb. 13, 2008, when they were eighth. It’s the first time since the 2003-04 season that the Gold Rush made the top 10 in consecutive polls.
Xavier (10-0) won 85-66 at Loyola in their only game of the past week. It’s the first time since 1983-84 and just the second time since World War II that the XU men won their first 10 Continue reading

XAVIER GOLD RUSH NEWS!

The following courtesy of Xavier (LA) Sports Information:

NEW ORLEANS — For the fourth time this season, Xavier University of Louisiana‘s Matt Pieri is the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week in men’s cross country.
Pieri, a sophomore from New Orleans and a graduate of Brother Martin High School, ran 8,000 meters in a season-best 28 minutes, 15.31 seconds Friday to finish 18th out of 74 non-NCAA Division I runners in the Mississippi College/Watson Ford Invitational at Clinton, Miss. Overall he placed 36th out of 131 men.
Pieri is the second Gold Rush harrier to win the GCAC award four or more times in a season since its establishment in 2008. Mark Dotson won five times in 2009. Xavier has won all five GCAC men’s Runner of the Week awards this season — Ray Walston earned the other — and 12 of 14 since the start of the 2009 season.
Xavier’s next meet — its final one of the regular season — will be the Demon Invitational at Walter P. Ledet Track Complex in Natchitoches, La., on October 22. The women’s 6,000-meter race will start at 4 p.m., followed by the men’s 8,000-meter race at 4:30. Northwestern State is the host school.

Comment: In the opposite of what you might think, it’s the women’s teams that are called the Gold Nuggets while the men’s teams are the Gold Rush. An interesting fact is that since 1996 the Gold Nuggets basketball team has fewer home losses than Pat Summit‘s Lady Volunteers!
