NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 27TH, 2012

SAGU RULES THE WORLD – As pointed out here at Balladeer’s Blog, each week of every college football season seems to find at least one NAIA football team upsetting a team from NCAA Division 2. For newbies to these divisions that’s like a 1AA (FCS) team upsetting a 1A (FBS) team. Yesterday the NAIA’s SOUTHWEST ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS kept that tradition alive by toppling D2’s PANHANDLE STATE AGGIES. In this Instant Classic the Lions emerged with a 28-27 win in Overtime.

NUMBER FIVE TAKES A FALL – The 5th ranked team in NCAA Division 2 football was upset in yesterday’s action. The number 13 SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY RED RAIDERS hosted their conference rivals the (5) BLOOMSBURG HUSKIES. In an epic gridiron struggle that the attendees will be telling their grandchildren about the conclusion of the game saw the Red Raiders come out on top by a final score of 49-42.

SKYHAWKS MAKE HISTORY – The NAIA’s POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS (helmet at left), are in their very first year of playing intercollegiate football. This weekend saw the Skyhawks notch their program’s first win.  Point University hosted the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS and completely dismantled them in a 48-14 laugher. Congratulations to the Skyhawks (how can you not love that name) for this milestone accomplishment.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The number 19 SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (helmet at left) defeated the visiting 6th ranked CC FIGHTING SAINTS, the most famous gridiron dynasty in NAIA history, in a 52-49 game for the ages.    ###    The unranked DOANE TIGERS brought down the number 18 team, the HASTINGS BRONCOS, in a dominant 48-16 homestand.    ###    … And the 20th ranked CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS fell on the road to the BAKER WILDCATS in a 32-30 nailbiter.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The unranked SLIPPERY ROCK ROCKETS were on the road against the number 11 CALIFORNIA (PA) VULCANS and pulled off a 28-26 upset in an unforgettable game.   ###   The GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS were likewise unranked and on the road and toppled the 19th ranked HILLSDALE CHARGERS in a 42-23 affair that no doubt had Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 20TH, 2012

A DYNASTY IN FREEFALL? – The (10) OSHKOSH TITANS (helmet at left) defeated the (5) WHITEWATER WARHAWKS in a 28-13 rout in their own house yesterday. Not only are the Warhawks the defending champions of NCAA Division 3 football, but they have been one of the two most dominant gridiron dynasties of the past decade. Whitewater has played in the past 7 D3 national championship games in a row against the other D3 football dynasty, Mount Union, and have won 4 of those 7. Oshkosh’s victory over the Warhawks was the 2nd loss for UWW this year, handing them more losses in one year than they had over the previous four seasons COMBINED! Earlier this season the Warhawks lost to unranked Buffalo State in one of their lowest-scoring games of the 21st Century. Congratulations to the Titans, of course, for this historic accomplishment!

HOW ‘BOUT THEM PIONEERS? – The NAIA’s WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS are in their first year of intercollegiate football since the 1940’s but have already logged their program’s SECOND victory of this inaugural season. Yesterday the Pioneers marked their new era’s very first Homecoming with a 58-37 smackdown of the SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD LIONS. Earlier this year WBU notched their revived program’s initial win by taking down the HOWARD PAYNE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS in a 27-23 nailbiter. To put this 2nd win this season in persepective, Point University and Bluefield are also in their debut seasons but haven’t notched their 1st win yet. Ave Maria University is in year number TWO of their football program but have yet to win a single game.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The 9th ranked ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS were on the road against the number 5 WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN and seized another W for Coach Kevin Donley, already the winningest coach in NAIA football history. The final score was 28-19.   ###   … And the unranked DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS toppled the 20th ranked DOANE TIGERS in a 28-24 Instant Classic.   ###   The scheduled game between the number 22 TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS and the MCPHERSON BULLDOGS was canceled to mourn the loss of Tabor football player Brandon Brown.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The 13th ranked MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS were visiting D2’s defending champions, the number 8 (previously number 1) PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS who were fresh off their first loss of the year to Northwest Missouri. The Griffons knocked PSU down even further with a 63-14 annihilation.   ###   The (23) HILLSDALE CHARGERS plucked the feathers off the visiting 14th ranked team, the SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS by a score of 34-17.   ###   The unranked HARDING BISONS (they go by Bisons, not Bison) played road warriors and brought down the number 15 OUACHITA BAPTIST TIGERS  34-14.   ###   The NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS edged the (21) CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES in a 24-23 homestand.   ###   The Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 13TH, 2012

NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – NCAA Division 2’s top-ranked defending champs, the PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS, faced conference rivals and perennial D2 football powers the (7) NORTHWEST MISSOURI BEARCATS (helmet at left) in the REAL Fall Classic yesterday. These two gridiron juggernauts always treat us to a hard-fought matchup at neutral Arrowhead Stadium and yesterday was no exception. The Bearcats emerged with a 31-21 victory, setting up a new number 1 in the next rankings.

THE BACONE WARRIORS RULE THE WORLD – For the 3rd college football season in a row Balladeer’s Blog has been chronicling the NAIA tradition of upsetting at least one NCAA Division 2 team per week. For newbies to these divisions that is like when a 1AA team upsets a 1A team.

For this week’s installment the NAIA’s BACONE WARRIORS (helmet at left) dismantled D2’s PANHANDLE STATE UNIVERSITY AGGIES by a score of 40-7.

NUMBER THREE TAKES A FALL – The 3rd ranked team in NCAA Division 2 also got toppled yesterday. In a Show Me State showdown the unranked MISSOURI SOUTHERN LIONS took it on the road and eked out a 31-30 victory over the MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS in an undeniable Instant Classic. The number 2 CSU- PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES are the presumptive new number 1 with their 35-21 road win over the COLORADO MINES OREDIGGERS.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) – The CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS improved to 4-3 by rising up and defeating the visiting number 11 team, the NORTHWESTERN (IA) RED RAIDERS in a 17-16 game for the ages.   ###   The FAULKNER EAGLES unleashed their sound and fury on the 16th ranked CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS in a 42-14 thrashing.   ###   … And the unranked SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS knocked the number 25 FRIENDS FALCONS out of the rankings in a 32-21 homestand.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA Division 2 – In addition to the number 1 and number 3 teams in D2 taking a tumble there were two more upsets in the rankings. The number 14 GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS got crushed on the road by the NORTHERN MICHIGAN WILDCATS  38-10.   ###   The UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (their spelling) played road warriors by bringing down the 23rd ranked CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES in a 10-6 defensive epic.   ###   The number 6 NEW HAVEN CHARGERS had a close call at Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 6TH, 2012

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – For the second week in a row the number 2 team in the NCAA Division 2 rankings has suffered an upset. The FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS (helmet at left) came into yesterday’s game unranked and faced with the daunting task of competing with the most famous football dynasty in D2 history – the 2nd ranked GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS. The Bulldogs ignored all the naysayers and delivered a 40-24 spanking to the Lakers in their own house.

SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY RULES THE WORLD – Just like during last season each Saturday brings us at least one NAIA team upsetting an NCAA Division 2 team. This week’s team to embrace that NAIA tradition was the SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES, who took it on the road and singed the feathers off the QUINCY HAWKS by a score of 34-18. For newbies to these divisions this is like when a 1AA team upsets a 1A team. (Or an FCS team upsets an FBS team if you’re a spineless conformist.)

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) – The TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS hosted the 20th ranked KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES and defeated them in a 56-31 manhandling.   ###   The number 22 MENLO OAKS fell at home to the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL WARRIORS in a nailbiting 19-14 battle which saw an east coast team bearding a west coast team in its own den.   ###   … And the unranked SOUTHERN OREGON RAIDERS dismembered the (24) EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS in a 68-22 laugher.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The WAYNE STATE WARRIORS (helmet at left) brought down the visiting number 12 team, the HILLSDALE CHARGERS, in a 24-21 Instant Classic. Who’s going to break the news to Michael Medved?   ###   The (23) UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS were on the road against the WINONA STATE WARRIORS and lost in a 10-9 defensive epic.   ###   … And the unranked EAST STROUDSBURG WARRIORS upset the 24th ranked WEST CHESTER GOLDEN RAMS by a Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2012

NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – In the most memorable bit of cougar on cougar violence since the days of the Joan Collins/ Linda Evans catfights on Dynasty the NAIA’s top ranked defending champs, the ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS were upset at home by the number 10 ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS.

St Francis Head Coach Kevin Donley recently became the NAIA’s leader in total coaching wins and this sweet upset is also another victory adding to the new record he’s setting. Donley’s Cougars brought down Chicago’s Cougars by a score of 25-13.

############ Every week at LEAST one NAIA team upsets an NCAA Division 2 team. This week the NAIA’s LANGSTON LIONS toppled D2’s homestanding SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM in a 17-14 blockbuster! ##########

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – Meanwhile, over in NCAA Division 2, the 2nd ranked (but not in Balladeer’s Blog’s rankings) UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AT DULUTH BULLDOGS were toppled by the homestanding SAINT CLOUD STATE HUSKIES.

The unranked Huskies (helmet at left) snuck up on UMD and pulled the rug out from under them in a 51-49 shootout for the ages.

HISTORY FOR CRONIN AND COMPANY – Coach Donley at Saint Francis isn’t the only coach marking a milestone this season. Over with the NAIA’s number 3 team, the GEORGETOWN (KY) TIGERS, their Head Coach Bill Cronin marked his 150th career win with a 63-21 dismemberment of the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS. In a rarity these days a large chunk of Cronin’s coaching staff were around for all 150 wins – Steve Hill, Craig Mullins, Bruce Owens and Marty Park also basked in the glory of yesterday’s accomplishment.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS came into yesterday’s game unranked but rose up to defeat the number 6 BENEDICTINE RAVENS in a 54-44 homestand that treated the Evangel faithful to their team’s signature win of the 2012 season thus far.   ###   The (18) GRAND VIEW VIKINGS pulled off a road upset of the 9th- ranked ST AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES by a score of 29-26 in Double Overtime.   ###   The MONTANA WESTERN BULLDOGS joined the Vikings in upsetting a ranked team in their own house by bringing down the number 14 EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS in a Continue reading

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2012

GRIDIRON HISTORY – The NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) witnessed a new record for career football wins!

Kevin Donley, Head Coach of the ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS (helmet at left) has broken the 256 win tie he held with Frosty Westering and Hank Biesiot. Donley’s 257th win came in an unbelievable 76-14 annihilation of the visiting CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS, who are in just their 2nd year of intercollegiate football.

THE CONCORDIA HORNETS RULE THE WORLD – A few weeks ago the CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS upset NCAA Division ONE’S Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.

Yesterday the Hornets played giant killers again, taking it on the road and bringing down the Division TWO team the CLARK ATLANTA PANTHERS. 22-17 was the final score in this 2nd milestone upset of the 2012 season for the team from Selma.

NUMBER 7 TAKES A FALL – The North Coast Athletic Conference saw a massive upset yesterday.

The ALLEGHENY GATORS came in unranked against the 7th- ranked WABASH LITTLE GIANTS. The Wabash home crowd was shocked at the 17-17 tie to end regulation and was positively floored by the final result! A field goal and a defensive stop in Overtime gave the Gators a well-earned 20-17 victory!

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – Ya call THIS an upset? The CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS are the most dominant football dynasty in NAIA history but because they blew one early game this year the pollsters paniced and took them from number 2 to the double digits. Never mind the fact that after last year’s September loss CC still made it to the championship game, the Hellions from Helena were dropped much too far and came into yesterday’s game ranked 11th. The number 8 EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS (the team that handed CC last season’s September loss, ironically enough) came to town and were handily beaten 28-7. This quasi- upset was the only upset in the NAIA rankings yesterday.

TOP 25 UPSETS – D2 – The UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (their spelling, not mine) hosted the unlucky number 13 WASHBURN ICHABODS yesterday and handed them a 35-20 loss.   ###   Meanwhile the 14th- ranked ABILENE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS were also on the road and found themselves on a the losing end of Continue reading
