NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM OCTOBER 27TH, 2012

SAGU RULES THE WORLD – As pointed out here at Balladeer’s Blog, each week of every college football season seems to find at least one NAIA football team upsetting a team from NCAA Division 2. For newbies to these divisions that’s like a 1AA (FCS) team upsetting a 1A (FBS) team. Yesterday the NAIA’s SOUTHWEST ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS kept that tradition alive by toppling D2’s PANHANDLE STATE AGGIES. In this Instant Classic the Lions emerged with a 28-27 win in Overtime.

NUMBER FIVE TAKES A FALL – The 5th ranked team in NCAA Division 2 football was upset in yesterday’s action. The number 13 SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY RED RAIDERS hosted their conference rivals the (5) BLOOMSBURG HUSKIES. In an epic gridiron struggle that the attendees will be telling their grandchildren about the conclusion of the game saw the Red Raiders come out on top by a final score of 49-42.

SKYHAWKS MAKE HISTORY – The NAIA’s POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS (helmet at left), are in their very first year of playing intercollegiate football. This weekend saw the Skyhawks notch their program’s first win.  Point University hosted the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS and completely dismantled them in a 48-14 laugher. Congratulations to the Skyhawks (how can you not love that name) for this milestone accomplishment.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The number 19 SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (helmet at left) defeated the visiting 6th ranked CC FIGHTING SAINTS, the most famous gridiron dynasty in NAIA history, in a 52-49 game for the ages.    ###    The unranked DOANE TIGERS brought down the number 18 team, the HASTINGS BRONCOS, in a dominant 48-16 homestand.    ###    … And the 20th ranked CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS fell on the road to the BAKER WILDCATS in a 32-30 nailbiter.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 2 – The unranked SLIPPERY ROCK ROCKETS were on the road against the number 11 CALIFORNIA (PA) VULCANS and pulled off a 28-26 upset in an unforgettable game.   ###   The GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS were likewise unranked and on the road and toppled the 19th ranked HILLSDALE CHARGERS in a 42-23 affair that no doubt had Michael Medved very upset.   ###   … And in a case of Tiger on Tiger violence the EAST CENTRAL TIGERS defeated the visiting number 23 team the OUACHITA BAPTIST TIGERS by a score of 37-27.

TOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 3 – The ITHACA BOMBERS hosted the 7th ranked SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEAGULLS and sent them home with a loss in a 21-14 gridiron epic.    ###    … And in the only other upset in the D3 rankings yesterday the 13th ranked WHITEWATER WARHAWKS, the defending champions of D3, continued their freefall with a 17-14 road loss to the unranked STEVENS POINT POINTERS.

HEIDELBERG SCORES! – D3’s number 17 HEIDELBERG STUDENT PRINCES (helmet at left) became just the SECOND team of the 2012 season to actually score points on the top-ranked MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS. The Student Princes fell to Mount Union by a score of 33-14, but the 2 TD’s they notched earned them a certain distinction this year. The (21) FRANKLIN GRIZZLIES are the only other team to have put up points against the Purple Raiders this season. And yes, Heidelberg’s teams are named after the folk tale about the Student Prince of Old Heidelberg.

THEY SHOOT FOOTBALL PLAYERS, DON’T THEY? – This week’s winner of the Marathon Game of the Week designation is the Madison, SD matchup between the JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES and the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS (helmet at left). At the end of Double Overtime the homestanding Trojans were the team left standing and had notched a 35-34 victory over the Jimmies. A missed extra point was the difference in the game.

ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The HARDIN-SIMMONS COWBOYS (helmet at left) lead off this category with their 86-42 roping and branding of the SUL ROSS STATE LOBOS.   ###   The (T22) TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS thrashed the visiting BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS by a score of 75-6.   ###   The (10) CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS celebrated Senior Day by eviscerating the CAMPBELLSVILLE TIGERS  62-19.   ###   The (T22) ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES won a 58-0 manhandling of the HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY INDIANS.   ###   The (8) CAL LUTHERAN KINGSMEN clobbered the WHITTIER COLLEGE POETS in a 62-38 road win.   ###   … And the VICTOR VALLEY RAMS mangled the COMPTON COLLEGE TARTARS by a score of 65-28.

WORKIN’ OVERTIME – Yesterday’s single-overtime affairs included: The LOUISIANA COLLEGE WILDCATS topped the TEXAS LUTHERAN BULLDOGS  44-37.   ###   The TUSCULUM COLLEGE PIONEERS fell to the MARS HILL LIONS by a score of 23-20.   ###   The MINNESOTA- MORRIS COUGARS notched a 30-29 road win over the CROWN STORM.   ###   The ROSE- HULMAN ENGINEERS defeated the MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH LIONS by a score of 28-21.   ###   The MARITIME COLLEGE PRIVATEERS fell to the visiting HUSSON EAGLES in a 17-14 smash-mouth classic.   ###   … And the WESTERN CONNECTICUT COLONIALS won a 20-14 homestand against the MONTCLAIR STATE REDHAWKS.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – D2 – The SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY SAVAGE STORM (helmet at left) took it on the road and defeated the ARKANSAS- MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS  41-35.   ###   The LAKE ERIE COLLEGE STORM won a 27-20 clash with the WALSH CAVALIERS.   ###   The HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY LUMBERJACKS survived a 14-10 invasion from the CENTRAL WASHINGTON WILDCATS.   ###   The MISSOURI S&T MINERS eked out a 13-12 win against the visiting URBANA BLUE KNIGHTS.   ###   … And the NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS won a 22-17 road trip at the SOUTHWEST BAPTIST BEARCATS.
