COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SCOREBOARDS FOR NOVEMBER 26TH

Yes, newbies to Balladeer’s Blog, the divisions of college football covered here settle their seasons on the field. Today the CC Fighting Saints, the defending champions of NAIA football, welcome the Azusa Pacific Cougars to Helena, MT for quarter- final action. Will CC once again derail the Cougars’ post season run or will APU rise up and dethrone the champs? Watch and see.

Meanwhile the NAIA’s Top Seeded Marian University Knights will host the University of St Francis (IL) Fighting Saints and the St Xavier University Cougars, who spent most of the 2011 season ranked at number 1 in the polls, travel to take on the MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers.

In SCFA college football the Mt San Antonio College Mounties, the defending SCFA champs as well as the defending CCCAA champs, welcome the Cerritos Falcons for the SCFA crown. The winner will play for the CCCAA title against the winner of the NCFA championship game today between the Fresno City College Rams and the defending NCFA title holders, the San Francisco Rams.

All this plus 2nd round playoff action in NCAA Divisions 2 and 3. Here are links to updating scoreboards for the divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog:

MOVIE HOSTS: CHRISTOPHER COFFIN (1961? – 1967)

Christopher Coffin, AKA Reed Pasternak AKA Reed Farrell, deserves to be mentioned with the biggest names in the history of B- Movie Hosts. As you can see in the photo at left Coffin hosted his movies from a wheelchair and when you combine that with his wry, erudite sense of humor and his aristocratic manner I think the best way to describe him would be as a combination of Sheridan Whitehead in The Man Who Came To Dinner and Ghoulardi.  Or maybe I should  make that  a pre- Ghoulardi version of Ghoulardi, depending on what year you accept for CC’s premier.

I want to address the ongoing debate over exactly what year his program debuted. The advocates of a Continue reading →

THANKSGIVING COLLEGE FOOTBALL RIVALRY: TUSKEGEE VS ALABAMA STATE

The HBCU gridiron rivalry between the TUSKEGEE GOLDEN TIGERS and the ALABAMA STATE HORNETS can’t help but be anything but flattering to Tuskegee. The Golden Tigers are, after all, Division 2 while the Hornets are 1AA (FCS if you’re a spineless conformist). In that respect it’s like the Continue reading →

THANKSGIVING DAY BAD MOVIE: SLASHER IN THE HOUSE

Happy Thanksgiving! In the spirit of holiday classics that get trotted out each year here’s a special Turkey Day encore of last year’s review of the laughably bad Thanksgiving Day themed slasher movie from the 1980’s. Until someone makes a horror film about a guy in a Pilgrim outfit slashing people this is what we’ve got.

SLASHER IN THE HOUSE (1981) – Category: Enjoyably campy bad movie  elevated by kitsch-value in the casting   The success of John Carpenter’s Halloween in the late 1970’s launched a frenzy of holiday-themed slasher movies trying to cash in on that film’s success. The most infamous, of course, was the Silent Night, Deadly Night series with the slasher dressed as Santa Claus (and its notorious tag line “You made it through Halloween, now try and survive Christmas!” ), but other holidays got a customized slasher flick, too, like New Year’s Eve (the hilariously bad New Year’s Evil), Valentine’s Day (the original My Bloody Valentine) and Mother’s Day (in a movie of the same name). It even got so Continue reading →

THANKSGIVING EVE BAD MOVIE TREAT: THE TURKEY MONSTER MOVIE “BLOOD FREAK”

I first reviewed Blood Freak in the summer of 2010, but considering how its premise makes it appropriate to the Turkey Day holiday I’ll rerun it like they used to rerun The Wizard of Oz every Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

BLOOD FREAK (1972) – Category: A neglected bad movie classic that deserves a Plan 9-sized cult following      This film is so comparatively well-known that I considered not including it, but it’s one of my all-time favorites so I’ll include it but just keep the entry short. The lead character in this movie is a biker named Herschell. It’s possible his motorcycle is called Shlomo but I don’t have a second source on that. (Sorry, I was channeling an old Borscht Belt comedian again) No, the director Brad Grinter admits he named the character after  legendary splatter film genius Herschell Gordon Lewis. Herschell gets a job at a turkey farm and at one point eats a turkey (and when I say “eats a turkey” I mean he literally just sits down with a knife, a fork and a whole cooked turkey and wolfs it all down)  treated with experimental chemicals by two mad scientists and … he turns into a man-sized turkey monster with Continue reading →

THE PERFECT THANKSGIVING EVE MOVIE

Just a note in the spirit of the holiday season to mention my favorite Thanksgiving Eve movie. Every Wednesday before Thanksgiving I make a point out of watching the musical Oliver! I know the Continue reading →

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF AND BOWL RESULTS FROM NOVEMBER 19TH

It’s Thanksgiving week and college football is as much associated with that holiday as pumpkin pie and leftovers. Yesterday the divisions of college football covered by Balladeer’s Blog played a variety of playoff games and Bowl games. Since my blog serves as a light introduction to these other divisions of college football let me emphasize that last statement for newbies: these divisions settle their seasons on the field.

Fans who forever moan and groan about the lack of a playoff in college football’s semi- professional division are seeing the light one person at a time and beginning to appreciate the post- season in the NAIA and the other divisions I cover. And now a look at yesterday’s results.

Campbellsville UniversityVICTORY BOWL – Yesterday saw the final event in the football season for the National Christian College Athletic Association. Because the two teams tied at the top of the NCCAA standings, Azusa Pacific and North Greenville, both made the playoffs in their respective divisions the Victory Bowl pitted the GREENVILLE COLLEGE PANTHERS against the CAMPBELLSVILLE TIGERS. Campbellsville notched an authoritative 21-7 win to close out their 2011 campaign.

NAIA PLAYOFFS

Marian U Knights helmetWHERE HAVE ALL THE VIKINGS GONE? – Heading into the NAIA’s opening playoff round there were no less than 3 teams called VIKINGS in the mix. All of them were eliminated in one afternoon. The Top Seeded MARIAN KNIGHTS and the 2nd seeded CC FIGHTING SAINTS shut out their Viking opponents with the Knights routing GRAND VIEW 31-0 and the Fighting Saints crushing VALLEY CITY STATE by a score of 47-0. The 10th seeded ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS completed the Hat Trick of Viking elimination by doubling up on the 7 seeds of MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE 28-14.

Saint Francis Fighting SaintsANOTHER SATURDAY, ANOTHER 4TH QUARTER RALLY – Yesterday marked the 3rd game in a row that the ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS, seeded at number 11, mounted a 4th quarter comeback to snag a win. This time they did it on the road against the Continue reading →

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR NOVEMBER 19TH

Today brings us the opening round of the NAIA college football playoffs, and they’re joined, of course, by some of the other divisions of college football covered by Balladeer’s Blog. There are also several Bowl games scheduled for today as well. See my preview earlier in the week for your favorite team’s matchup.

The National Christian College Athletic Association’s Victory Bowl will also be played today with the Greenville College Panthers taking on the Campbellsville Tigers. See below for the video link.

Naturally I’ll have my usual pithy recaps of the day’s gridiron action tomorrow morning. For today, spread the word to fans of NCAA Division 1 football that they can see the kind of intercollegiate football playoff action they can’t get from D1. And now, links to updating scoreboards for the divisions of college football covered here at Balladeer’s Blog:

BAD MOVIE PAGE: BLOOD HARVEST (1987)

BLOOD HARVEST (1987) – Category: Enjoyably bad movie elevated by kitsch value in the casting     As if 1960’s folk singer Tiny Tim wasn’t creepy enough in real life here he is in the 80’s slasher flick that is famous purely because of his presence in it … in clown makeup (AAAAAH!). This review will start off with a major spoiler, so stop reading right now if you actually want to watch this thing as if it was a real movie.

Tiny Tim is NOT the slasher in this film. I often wonder how many copies of this flick have been sold over the years based purely on the fallacious word of mouth that the psychotic- seeming Timster supposedly played a Jason Voorhees style slasher in this movie. Blood Harvest starts out letting the audience THINK Tiny Tim, or Marvelous Mervo as his character is named, is the killer as he hoists a dead body up like a side of beef while singing an eerie parody of a nursery rhyme. We also get a few scenes of Mervo talking to dead bodies and positioning them on furniture like a macabre version of a little girl’s tea party.

Anyone with an eye for movie cliches, though, can tell early on that  Continue reading →

A QUICK CHECK- IN WITH NAIA COLLEGE BASKETBALL WITH GEORGE FLOROS AND RONY SEIKALY

Of the two men holding up the trophy in this picture, the one on the left is George Floros, AKA Big G, and the one on the right is, of course, the former NBA player Rony Seikaly. The Lebanese Seikaly was the very first draft pick of the Miami Heat when they were an expansion franchise in 1988. George, a native of Greece, was not. (rimshot)

This photo was taken in 1983 in Paris, where George, Rony and their teammates from ACS Athens High School had won the international competition that year. There’s no truth to the rumor that George and Rony went on to promise that ACS Athens would win “Not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven” of those titles. George and Rony were quite a deadly duo on the court and were known, respectively, as The Greek Playboy and The Guy Who Can Actually Play Basketball (I’m just kidding, George! I threw that in for Nikki’s benefit. ). After his NBA career Rony went on to become an active real estate entrepreneur and George (who, by the way, is available, ladies) now divides his time between taking trips to Las Vegas and planning trips to Las Vegas.

Anyway, since Rony and George will probably Continue reading →
