AMERICAN MUMMY TALE: THE SQUAW HOLLOW HORROR

“I’m an Aztec Mummy, I must say!”

Balladeer’s Blog’s month-long celebration of Halloween continues! Recently I reviewed the neglected 1890’s horror stories The King in Yellow and The Great God Pan, two excellent pieces of Halloween reading. This time around I’ll examine The Squaw Hollow Sensation, originally published in serialized form in the California newspaper The Mountain Democrat from May 31st to July 26th, 1879. The story was set in Squaw Hollow, California, near Placerville in present-day El Dorado County. In fact the El Dorado County Historical Museum was where I obtained my copy of the story for this review.

THE SQUAW HOLLOW SENSATION

Our main character is Berlin’s Doctor Loerder Von Herbst, a man trying to prove that ancient Egyptians migrated across the Atlantic Ocean and that the Aztecs were really a colony of Egypt. His studies have led him throughout the American West, northern Mexico and part of California, wherever he believes the legendary region of ancient Aztlan to have been. Von Herbst theorizes  that the preserved figures called Aztec Mummies are not corpses but rather living beings who were put into a centuries-long sleep and can be revived.

The good doctor has created a special chemical solution that in experiments has restored body parts from dissected corpses to a condition resembling living tissue. He believes he can use this chemical solution as part of a procedure to bring an Aztec Mummy back to life. Ancient papyri refer to Continue reading →

MUSLIM FANATIC ROUNDUP

Religion kills

Religion kills

Welcome back to Balladeer’s Blog, where ALL religions are treated with skepticism and a critical eye, INCLUDING the blood-soaked beast called Islam. I’m not one of those gutless wonders who bash Christianity and other faiths while simultaneously crawling on their belly for Islam.

Here’s a little look at just a few of the recent activities of the most homophobic and misogynistic religion in the world at this particular point in history.

Boko Haram, one of the countless groups of Muslim fanatics in the world, burst into an agricultural college in Nigeria and killed four dozen students and injured many others. The students they killed WERE ALSO MUSLIMS, but because they had disobeyed Boko Haram’s threats against studying at a non-Muslim college were put to death. Boko Haram means “learning is sinful” which could serve as a motto for all of Islam if you stop and think about it.

Meanwhile hearings were held at Continue reading →

THE MOST NEGLECTED BAD MOVIE CLASSICS FOR HALLOWEEN

The Lift

The Lift

It’s Halloween month! As usual Balladeer’s Blog will spend October examining all manner of horror films, stories and obscure monsters from around the world. In addition to looking at quality horror films that fly below the radar I enjoy examining bad movie gems that don’t get the attention they deserve just because they weren’t presented on shows like The Texas 27 Film Vault.

Laughing at bad movies is one of the greatest pleasures in life. Regular readers of Balladeer’s  Blog are very familiar with my Bad Movie page where I focus on various film flops that I feel deserve larger audiences because of how dementedly enjoyable they are.
Since it’s the Halloween Season this list will present eleven of the most neglected bad horror movie classics, many of which deserve Plan 9- sized cult followings. These are short takes. For my full-length reviews of these and other cinematic turkeys see my Bad Movie page. https://glitternight.com/bad-movies/

11. THE LIFT (1983) – A killer elevator is the unique menace in this joyously absurd horror film from the Netherlands. A heroic elevator repairman tries to stop the bloody reign of terror of a sentient elevator which the movie’s ads described as “the perfect killing machine”. 10. ATTACK OF THE BEAST CREATURES (1983) – The surviving passengers and crew of a sunken luxury liner find themselves on an uncharted island full of ponds and streams that dissolve human flesh. The island is home to Continue reading →

OBAMA’S THUG ERIC HOLDER SLAPPED DOWN BY FEDERAL JUDGE

Eric Holder, the J Edgar Hoover of Color

Eric Holder, the J Edgar Hoover of Color

Eric Holder, the head of Little Barry Obama’s Political Inquisition Department and the main thug responsible for attempts at violating the civil rights of American citizens, was sharply rebuked by U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson. Berman denied the sleazy Holder’s desperate plea to dismiss the lawsuit filed against the head of Obama’s Domestic Gestapo by the House Oversight Committee regarding Holder’s involvement in the Fast and Furious Scandal, just one of the dozens of scandals clinging to the corrupt Obama administration.

Per Berman’s ruling the Continue reading →

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2013

Union Bulldogs helmetUNION (KY) RULES THE WORLD – The tradition of NAIA teams upsetting upper division teams from the NCAA continues! Yesterday the NAIA’s UNION (KY) BULLDOGS were on the road against Division TWO’s UVA-WISE HIGHLAND CAVALIERS. The game was a hard-fought back-and-forth affair with the Bulldogs upsetting the Highland Cavs by a final score of 24-17. For newbies to these divisions it’s like when a 1AA (FCS) team upsets a 1A (FBS) team.

Edward Waters Tigers helmetNEAR MISSES – Two other teams came dangerously close to pulling off similar upsets in yesterday’s action. The NAIA’s EDWARD WATERS COLLEGE TIGERS came within a few points of upsetting NCAA Division TWO’s MOREHOUSE MAROON TIGERS. EWC wound up losing by a very tight score of 28-26.   ###   And Division Two’s EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS nearly brought down Division ONE’s Incarnate Word Cardinals but fell 33-26.

HELMETGrand_View_IANUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – The 7th ranked GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS welcomed the number 2 team in the nation, the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS. Any casual viewer would have thought the rankings were reversed judging by the way the Vikings outperformed the Cougars on both sides of the ball. The final score in this upset was Grand View 23  St Francis 7.

Eastern Oregon helmetNUMBER THREE TAKES A FALL, TOO – Not only that but yesterday also saw the unranked EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS playing host to the nation’s 3rd ranked CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS. The Mountaineers put together 4 solid Quarters of football and proved that the Continue reading →

GIRLS ON PROBATION (1938) ON THE TEXAS 27 FILM VAULT: MARCH 2ND, 1985

Girls on Probation

Girls on Probation

In the middle 1980’s/ Way down on Level 31 …

Before MST3K there was The Texas 27 Film Vault! Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of this neglected cult show from the 1980’s with another review of an episode where an original air date can be determined. My interview with Randy Clower, my research through VERY old newspapers and emailed memories from my fellow Vaulties are helping in this attempt to reconstruct elements of the show’s history.

EPISODE ORIGINALLY BROADCAST: Saturday March 2nd, 1985 from 10:30pm to 1:00 am.

FILM VAULT LORE: This is the 2nd oldest episode I’ve reviewed. The oldest episode was the February 9th, 1985 airing of Trunk to Cairo with Audie Murphy. Special thanks to my fellow T27FV fan Jessica for the serial episode and a comedy sketch from the episode.

One of the comedy sketches in the show was a mock commercial for Blue Arrow Bus Lines, the fictional bus line in the movie. The phony ad hyped the bus line as the Official Bus Line of female fugitives on the run.

Lost CitySERIAL: Before showing and mocking the movie machine-gun toting Randy Clower and Richard Malmos of the fictional Film Vault Corps (“The few, the proud, the sarcastic”) showed and mocked a chapter of the notoriously campy sci-fi serial The Lost City (1935). That serial featured a super-scientific city lost in the middle of the African jungle plus zombified “giant” African tribesmen, ray-guns, a slinky femme fatale and a tribe of pygmies. There’s also a Great White Hunter as the hero and a mad scientist whose inventions include a machine that turns black people into white people! And the “colorization” is considered a REWARD for tribesmen who serve the mad scientist well! All this plus BOTH William Boyds in one serial!

THE MOVIE: GIRLS ON PROBATION (1938) was one of the countless Warner Brothers B-movies that future president Ronald Reagan starred in before his career in politics. Reagan had just been inaugurated  for his second term less than two months earlier so the Reagan jokes from our Film Vault Technicans First Class no doubt flew hard and fast. The Texas 27 Film Vault also showed Bedtime for Bonzo, another infamous Reagan pic, but I have yet to narrow down the exact date of that episode.

Reagan is the Continue reading →
