The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats football team has been picked to win the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association title in 2011. This would be the sixth year in a row for the Bearcats to win the conference championship, but their first without legendary coach Mel Tjeerdsma, who retired after last season. The Bearcats have won twelve of the last Continue reading

GENERALS PICKED TO ONCE AGAIN WIN THE OLD DOMINION ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
What football fan doesn’t love the coolness of the logo and the name of the Washington and Lee Generals? Here at Balladeer’s Blog that logo is the honorary 27th letter of the alphabet, forming a combined w and l sound like in “bowl” or “knowledge”. The Generals are the defending champions of the Continue reading

NAIA COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS SIGNED IN THE NFL
Recently I looked at NCAA Division 3 players signed to NFL teams. Now let’s take a look at the NAIA football players signed by NFL teams in this year’s odd, frenzied period of free agent signings.
The Chargers took Patrick Crayton from the NWOSU Rangers, the Bills took Michael Jasper from the Continue reading

HUTCHINSON BLUE DRAGONS PICKED SECOND IN JAYHAWK CONFERENCE
At the Media Day events for the Jayhawk Conference (Unofficial slogan: The greatest concentration of cool-named teams in college sports) the Hutchinson Blue Dragons were picked to finish second, behind perennial nemesis Butler (KS). The Blue Dragons are fresh off a 10-2 season and a Salt City Bowl victory over the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters. Will this be the year they Continue reading

WHERE’D EVERYBODY GO? LIFE IN THE DEPLETED GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE
Remember all the way back to last football season, when the Gulf South Conference was still being called “The SEC of Division 2 Football”? What a difference a year makes. Last season Balladeer’s Blog covered the departure of teams from the GSC and the Lone Star Conference in order to form the Great American Conference. The Gulf South was hit the worst, losing over half their football schools, as opposed to three from the LSC. Though retaining an overall membership of nine institutions only five of those remaining GSC schools sponsor football. Wow.
The Delta State Statesmen are the preseason pick to Continue reading

D3 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS SIGNED AS FREE AGENTS BY THE NFL
With the NFL strike officially over Free Agent signings have begun so the time seemed right to look at some of the Free Agents picked up from the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers.
Since I’m starting with Giovanni Stanley of the Whittier College Poets (one of my Cool-Named Team of the Day entries from awhile back) that’s why the Poets’ logo is featured here. Stanley stayed on the west coast by Continue reading

D3 AMERICAN TEAM WINS THE GOLD MEDAL
The United States produced a stunning display of offensive fireworks and defensive dominance to humble Canada 50-7 in the Gold Medal game of the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship and defend the world title it won in Japan in 2007.
USA scored 21 points in the final 1:51 of the first half and Continue reading

SHAMELESS BRAGGING: BALLADEER’S BLOG FEATURED
My blog has once again been featured, this time in a press release and at the site of Humboldt State University. Their stadium, the Redwood Bowl, was featured in my recent bit on The Top Six College Football Stadiums In D2.
The response has been tremendous, from D2 message boards and the institutions themselves and I am very appreciative! I’ve been getting literally thousands of visits to that post over the past few days and some very nice e-mails from students and administrators at those schools. Humboldt State went the extra mile, contacting me with a few e-mail interview questions and doing that nice simultaneous press release and post at their site. Here is the link! Let’s all cheer on the Lumberjacks – http://hsujacks.com/news/2011/7/19/FB_0719114546.aspx?path=football

THE TOP SIX COLLEGE FOOTBALL STADIUMS IN NCAA DIVISION 2
Yes, I know that technically the plural form of stadium would be “stadia” but I’m going with the more generally known form here. With this post I’ll be looking at some of the D2 football venues that I feel are that division’s equivalent of D1’s Big House or The Swamp.

6. BOWMAN-GRAY STADIUM
TEAM: WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS
COMMENT: This is sort of D2’s version of Ohio State’s stadium the Horseshoe, back when it Continue reading
