COLLEGE FOOTBALL FROM AUGUST TWENTY-NINTH

HEADLINES

NAIA OVER NCAA DIVISION TWO – Another Upset of a D2 team by an NAIA football team. The BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS took the field against the visiting MILES COLLEGE DRAGONS. The Wildcats grabbed a quick 13-3 advantage in the 1st Quarter, then made that 16-3 by Halftime. It was all defense from there as neither team added any more points to the scoreboard. 16-3 was the final count as well.

NCAA DIVISION TWO OVER NCAA DIVISION ONE – In this game D2’s ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS traveled to take on D1’s CHICAGO STATE COUGARS. Chicago State led 7-3 in the opening Quarter, but the Lakers took over from there. At the Half, Roosevelt U. was on top 27-14, which morphed into a 37-21 lead to end the 3rd Quarter. The teams exchanged TDs in the 4th as the Lakers won out 44-28.

DOWN GOES NUMBER THREE – Back in the NAIA, the nation’s 7th ranked MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS welcomed the number 3 BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 14-7 Mustangs advantage by the midpoint of the game. In the 3rd Quarter the Ravens went up 21-20 only to see Morningside University come back in the 4th for a 35-28 triumph.

KNOCKING OFF NUMBER EIGHT – Staying in the NAIA for the moment, the number 9 INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS hosted the 8th ranked DORDT UNIVERSITY DEFENDERS. Halftime saw the Wildcats on top of Dordt 21-7, but a big 3rd Quarter let the Defenders knot things up 28-28. The 4th Quarter ended in a 38-31 victory for Indiana Wesleyan.

NUMBER SIX TAKES A FALL – In the NJCAA the nation’s number 10 GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS entertained the 6th ranked TRINITY CALLEY COLLEGE CARDINALS. The Bulldogs absolutely dominated Trinity Valley College on both sides of the ball. When all of the dust settled, Georgia Military College had pounded the Cardinals 49-10.

ANOTHER NUMBER SIX TAKES A FALL – Way down in the CCCAA the PALOMAR COLLEGE COMETS found themselves on the road against the number 6 VENTURA COLLEGE PIRATES. Though Ventura College led 3-0 to end the opening Quarter, the Comets turned things around to go out in front 19-6 at the Half. From there a scoreless 2nd Half made 19-6 the game’s final tally as well.

ROAD RAGE – The (22) SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS crushed their hosts the BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS to the tune of 48-14   ###   Meanwhile, the ST. AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES won 33-21 at the CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS   ###   And the (4) COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES feasted on the EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS by a final score of 37-7.

ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – This game pitted the (19) EVANGEL UNIVERSITY VALOR against the visiting UNIVERSITY OF ST. MARY SPIRES. The Valor parlayed a 10-0 1st Quarter lead into a 38-7 advantage at Halftime. After the break, Evangel University kept up the pace, ultimately dispatching the Spires SEVENTY-THREE to SEVEN.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The MAYVILLE STATE COMETS won 29-22 at the BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS   ###   The SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (should be Sea Gulls) edged their hosts the SIMPSON UNIVERSITY REDHAWKS 38-35   ###   And the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WARRIORS downed the UNIVERSITY OF FT. LAUDERDALE EAGLES (should be Flamingos). 

NCAA DIVISION TWO

UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The only Upset in the D2 rankings came in the game between the LENOIR-RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS and their guests the 16th ranked VIRGINIA UNION UNIVERSITY PANTHERS. The Bears kept Virginia Union off the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter. Meanwhile, Lenoir-Rhyne led the Panthers 14-0, 31-0 and 38-0 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters, respectively. In the 4th, the Bears won 45-3.

ALL NAME GAMES – The KENTUCKY STATE THOROBREDS won 41-14 at the CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS   ###   Elsewhere, the UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY PEACOCKS beat the UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES by a score of 30-13   ###   And the (23) NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS eviscerated the DELTA STATE STATESMEN FIFTY-TWO to NOTHING.

INSTANT CLASSIC – In this game the WASHBURN UNIVERSITY ICHABODS traveled to take on the TRUMAN STATE BULLDOGS. Truman State was on top of Washburn 7-0 in the opening Quarter, but the Ichabods went up 17-7 by Halftime. After the break, the Bulldogs outscored WU 14-10 but still lost 27-21.

BUILDING A VICTORY – In this game the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (Shipbuilders) welcomed the SUSSEX COUNTY COLLEGE SKYLANDERS. A 6-0 1st Quarter edge for the Builders over SCC became 12-7 at the midpoint. From there, the Apprentice School outscored the Skylanders 15-7 to win out the game 27-14.

SPIRIT OF EIGHTY-NINE – The MISSOURI S&T MINERS were less than gracious hosts to the WESTGATE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY GOLD RAVENS yesterday. Things were so bad that the Gold Ravens should just burn the game tape and deny ever having been in the Show Me State this weekend. The Miners won EIGHTY-NINE to TWELVE.

NJCAA

ONE AND TWO ROLL – The number 1 team in the country – the IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS – utterly obliterated the visiting HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES to the tune of SEVENTY-ONE to NOTHING    ###    And the 2nd ranked HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS made their hosts the ELLSWORTH COLLEGE PANTHERS their prison brides by a final score of SEVENTY-SIX to THREE.

TUSSLE IN THE TOP FIFTEEN – In sharp contrast to the two preceding blowouts, the 13th ranked BUTLER (KS) GRIZZLIES visited the number 15 IOWA CENTRAL COLLEGE TRITONS for an Instant Classic. At Halftime the Grizzlies led ICC 13-3, then had to hold on by their fingertips the rest of the way. The 3rd Quarter ended with the Tritons on top 24-23, but Butler College pulled out a 26-24 win in the 4th.

CCCAA

EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE – The number 1 COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO BULLDOGS squared up on their hosts the 15th ranked COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS GIANTS 49-7   ###   Next, the number 2 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS shut out the MOUNT SAN JACINTO EAGLES 31-0   ###   And the number 3 MODESTO COLLEGE PIRATES won 21-7 at the 20th ranked AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS.

CLOSE CALL FOR NUMBER TEN – The (10) FULLERTON COLLEGE HORNETS got almost more than they could handle at the MOORPARK COLLEGE RAIDERS yesterday. A 14-14 1st Quarter deadlock became a 24-14 Hornets lead at the Half. Neither team scored in the 3rd Quarter and the 4th saw Fullerton College hold on for a 31-24 victory.
