FOOL KILLER PART TWENTY-NINE: FEBRUARY 1921

Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the many facets of Fool Killer lore. FOR PART ONE, INCLUDING THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT, CLICK HERE

Matthew as the Fool Killer would be perfectPART TWENTY-NINE – As always part of the fun comes from the way the Fool Killer’s opinions are a mix of today’s left-wing and right-wing attitudes. Some you’ll agree with, others you won’t but it’s always interesting.

Here is a look at some of the Fool Killer’s targets from James L Pearson’s February of 1921 issue of The Fool-Killer.

** People who were fine with spending $23 million apiece on warships but who penny-pinched on contributions to feed starving children in Europe. Ironically given our 21st Century view of him, future president Herbert Hoover was working with the Literary Digest to raise money to send food to Europeans but came up with only $10 million – less than half their stated goal.

** Criminals who were using the military training they received in World War One to efficiently rob banks and armored cars.

** Woodrow Wilson, for refusing to pardon socialist anti-war activist Eugene Debs the previous Christmas and release him from prison.

** Jazz musicians. (Pearson and his Fool Killer espoused a bizarre blend of socialism and religious fanaticism.)

** Pompous snobs who looked down on people who wore overalls when doing their jobs.

** The corporate media – labeled “The Lie Trust” – for serving as “prostitute purveyors of plutocratic prejudice.” The Fool Killer also recommended The Brass Check, Upton Sinclair’s indictment of American “journalism” and the way newspapers served as nothing but mouthpieces for the wealthy.

** People who doubted Pearson’s odd Apocalyptic belief that “The Gentile Age” was over and an age of crime, war and other ills was fast approaching.

As I always say, it’s fascinating to read this old publication and its odd mix of viewpoints – even the ones you disagree with.

Superb and educational look at political satire from 1921.

  3. Thuy

Sinclair Lewis should see how corrupt the pretend “news” media is now.

  4. Merle

The Lie Trust would apply to today’s fake news outlets.

  5. Janet

The ones from Pearson in the 1910 are better than these 1920s.
