The 6th seeded UNIVERSITY OF SAINT KATHERINE FIREBIRDS served up one of the biggest upsets of Day One of Pool Play at this year’s NCCAA World Series. After taking 3rd seeded Campbellsville University out to FIFTEEN INNINGS before dropping a 5-4 game the Firebirds faced the 2nd ranked COLORADO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY COUGARS.
After 2 scoreless Innings the Cougars grabbed a 1-0 edge in the 3rd with the University of Saint Katherine making it a 1-1 tie in the 4th. The 6th Inning ended with Colorado Christian back on top 2-1 and the 8th ended with the Cougars holding a 3-2 lead. In the 9th the Firebirds drove in a pair of runs for a 4-3 upset win. Pitcher Trevor Collins picked up the W.
In other Pool Play results from Day One the (10) HIWASSEE COLLEGE TIGERS toppled the (3) CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS by a score of 4-3.
The other results were all chalk with (4) SOUTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY defeating the (5) CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS 2-0, the (2) COLORADO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY COUGARS downing the (7) WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS 8-3 and the (1) BIOLA UNIVERSITY EAGLES doubling up on the (8) OTTAWA (AZ) UNIVERSITY SPIRIT 8-4.
