PUNXSATAWNEY CHUCKS

Comment: With Groundhog Day just a few days back this is a very appropriate team to start out with!

The Punxsatawney Chucks (short for Woodchucks) not only have appealing helmets but they deserve the world’s thanks for not taking the easy way out and calling themselves the Punxsatawney Phils.

HOLY CROSS CRUSADERS

Comment: It’s no secret that “Crusaders” is one of the coolest names for sports teams.

And if your institution is called Holy Cross then why not go with the stark simplicity of these lids? I really like the white on green color scheme of these helmets, too. Gold on green would be the only thing better.

CONESTOGA VALLEY BUCKSKINS

Comment: Okay, so we were all hoping for a Conestoga Wagon to be on the helmets of this team, but still …

The more I looked at these helmets the more they grew on me. What finally pushed me off the fence was the infinitely cool team name Buckskins. 

UNION – A.C. VALLEY FALCON KNIGHTS

Comment: No, not the Lightning Sharks … it’s the Falcon Knights.

There is a definite “love them or hate them” air about these unusual helmets. All things considered, I think they represent a reasonable compromise in the combination of these two formerly independent institutions. 

J. P. MCCASKEY RED TORNADO

Comment: I know, you’re expecting me to make a lame joke like “These helmets really blew me away.” Well, I’m not gonna do it.

And that’s Red Tornado, singular, not Tornadoes. Think of it like Crimson Tide or Green Wave or Golden Hurricane.

WEST SCRANTON INVADERS

Comment: Why aren’t more sports teams called Invaders? That has got to be one of the coolest names available.

Putting that aside, there are good ways of employing a single letter on a white helmet shell and there are lame ways of employing that approach. Needless to say West Scranton (“It’s over the ocean to Scranton, Pennsylvania?”) does it the good way.

HEMPFIELD BLACK KNIGHTS

Comment: I’ll admit it. I’m high on the name Hempfield. I know, right?

But most importantly the logo on these lids manages to combine a retro look with a futuristic appeal that catches the eye in ANY era.

MANHEIM BLUE STREAKS

Comment: No, not the Manheim Steam Rollers, but the Manheim Blue Streaks.

The emphasis on colorfully named teams this time around is purely coincidental. I did not go out of my way to find them, it was all purely just the luck of the draw.
