To the surprise of nobody the Islamic State continues to execute gay people by throwing them off of rooftops. Recently a gay man actually survived the fall only to be beaten to death by the mob of jeering Muslims below. What a peaceful religion!  

And in Nigeria the Muslim Sharia Police arrested twelve people for preparing for a gay wedding. Homosexuality is against the hate-filled and intolerant Sharia laws.

THE SPEEDY JOURNEY (1744) by Eberhard Christian Kindermann. This work of proto-science fiction begins with the fictitious discovery of a moon orbiting the planet Mars over a century before Phobos and Deimos were observed in real life. From there it features a journey through space to reach this celestial body.  

The Speedy Journey represents an odd but entertaining fusion of scientific speculation and elements of Christian mythology. Fama (“Fame”), an actual angel from Heaven heralds the discovery of the fictitious moon of Mars and even sings the public praises of the team of scientists who set out to explore the satellite. In the peculiar fictional world presented by Kindermann in this book the general public takes in stride these visitations from angels who serve as virtual P.R. flacks for men of science.   Continue reading →

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JAMES JOYCE

His works got me hooked in my teens when I really related to his character Stephen Dedalus as he rejected his religion and indulged what I call his “young and pretentious side” in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I wore out my copy of Joyce’s novel Ulysses and continue to mark Bloom’s Day to this very day.

Over the years Finnegans Wake replaced Ulysses as my favorite Joyce novel and I’m fonder than many people are of his play Exiles, his “epiphanies” in Dubliners and, poetry geek that I am, even Pomes Penyeach and Chamber Music. COLLEGE BASKETBALL RESULTS

North Park Vikings logoVIKING ON VIKING VIOLENCE – For the second week in a row the NORTH PARK UNIVERSITY VIKINGS lead things off by notching an upset of a highly-ranked team! This time around NPU hosted the number 4 team in the nation – the AUGUSTANA (IL) COLLEGE VIKINGS. Despite trailing for the overwhelming majority of the game North Park came from behind late to play David to another team’s Goliath once again. The final score was North Park 76  Augustana 69. 

WallyWabash Wabash Little GiantsOTHER TOP TEN UPSETS – The WABASH COLLEGE LITTLE GIANTS battled the 10th ranked COLLEGE OF WOOSTER SCOTS and led them at Halftime by a score of 36-29 on their way to a 68-65 upset win. Daniel Purvlicis led the Little Giants with 19 points and 13 rebounds!     ###      And the SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE PRIDE toppled the visiting number 6 WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS in a 63-59 thriller.   Continue reading →
