PULP HEROES: THE FINAL TWO SILVER JOHN SHORT STORIES

I’m continuing my look at Manly Wade Wellman’s pulp hero Silver John, the roaming singer and guitarist who fights supernatural forces in the Appalachian Mountains of long ago, sort of like a countrified Orpheus meets Kolchak. He’s called Silver John because of the silver strings on his guitar and the silver coins he carries in his pockets. For more details click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

SIN’S DOORWAY – This story takes place when Silver John is much younger and in fact hasn’t even begun using silver guitar strings yet. For anyone wondering how he would do against supernatural menaces without silver implements this is your chance to see our hero improvise. Anyway, this tale features a younger and less experienced John dodging corrupt southern lawmen and winding up getting lost in the wilderness. He’s nearly starved by the time he finds a town and arrives just in time for  Continue reading

CACTUS CATHY ENTERS THE FRONTIERADO VALHALLA

Another recipient of a customized Saga has been kind enough to post it to their blog. Cactus Cathy, AKA Unga Bunga Girl, was a gun-toting gambler and reporter in the old west, and her Saga includes mentions of several other Saga characters. Here Continue reading

THE TOP 4 FRONTIERADO MOVIES: NUMBER 3 – POSSE (1993)

POSSE is a terrific western about a gang of African American gunfighters (plus the goofiest Baldwin brother) involved in an action-packed epic journey across the American west. The Frontierado holiday (which will be here Friday August 5th) is the perfect time of year to hunker down with this film while drinking a Cactus Jack or a Deuces Wild or two. I’ll review the recipes for those mixed drinks in a few days, for now we’ll focus on the third-place movie on our countdown.

Posse stars Mario Van Peebles, who also directed, as Jesse Lee, the brooding, revenge-driven hero of the saga. He and all but one member of his gang, our titular posse, are soldiers fighting in Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. A dangerous assault they carry out turns out to be Continue reading

THE TOP 4 FRONTIERADO MOVIES: NUMBER TWO – ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968)

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST is, to me, the definitive Spaghetti Western. This movie incorporates all of the best elements of Italo-westerns and has the additional advantages of actual artistic merit and some location filming in the real American West. One of the most distracting elements of many Spaghetti oaters is the fact that the films were mostly shot in Spain’s Jarama Valley, which is great for a Spanish Civil War buff like myself, but that valley doesn’t really resemble the American west that the stories are set in. Sergio Leone got to shoot some scenes in Monument Valley and such authentic scenery definitely helps in a film that exploits visuals to a degree unseen since the age of silent movies. This is undeniably an action film, but  Continue reading

NOT SINCE PAUL AND LINDA: USF COUGARS HIRE A HUSBAND AND WIFE COACHING TANDEM NAMED MCCARTNEY

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (July 7, 2011) – University of Sioux Falls President Mark Benedetto often refers to his campus community as a family. He has taken this philosophy to a new level, by hiring the husband/wife tandem of Joel and Andrea McCartney to lead the Continue reading

THE TOP FOUR FRONTIERADO MOVIES: NUMBER ONE – SILVERADO (1985)

The Frontierado holiday is coming up on Friday, August 5th. As part of the buildup to this major holiday I was reviewing some very, very weird westerns now and then. But now with the countdown having begun in earnest it’s time to look at some quality westerns. For this list of the Top 4 Frontierado Westerns I won’t bother going 4 through 1 since I’ve never made any secret about how Silverado is, to me, the official movie of this holiday.

The film has all the high spirits and family appeal of Star Wars plus the well-choreographed action scenes of Raiders of the Lost Ark. On top of that Silverado features all the  highly stylized gunplay of the best Spaghetti Westerns but NOT the mud, blood, sweat and brutality of that genre. This movie is pure escapism and features Continue reading

VICTORY SPORTS NETWORK’S PRESEASON NAIA COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP 25 IS OUT!

The Saint Xavier Cougars are listed at Number 2 in this year’s VSN Preseason Top 25, but I have their logo pictured here because not only do these Cougars hail from Chicago, the land of Rich Koz (AKA Son of Svengoolie AKA just plain Svengoolie) but their head coach, Mike Feminis, makes a habit of showing odd B-movies on the team bus on road trips! That little nugget came out in Balladeer’s Blog’s interview with three Cougar stars last football season. Anyway, Continue reading

THE ELEVEN MOST NEGLECTED DEITIES IN HINDU MYTHOLOGY

When it comes to Hindu mythology, it seems like even non-lovers of the subject can at least name the Trimurti of Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver and Shiva the Destroyer (all seen seated to the left, having a kaffeeklatsch) but the other gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon get short shrift. So, in the spirit of my look at the Eleven Most Neglected Deities in Teutono- Norse Mythology comes this examination of some of the Hindu deities that I feel deserve more attention than they seem to get. 11. YAMA – The god who ruled over the land of the dead. He and his sister Yami were the first mortals on Earth and were children of the sun god Surya (or in some traditions he simply created them). Since they were the first mortals they were also the first human beings to die and the two became the Continue reading
