POLO: WHITE BIRCH WINS BUTLER HANDICAP
Balladeer’s Blog continues its coverage of the world’s OLDEST team sport.
The victors and the vanquished on stage after the match.
Mere weeks after winning the Waterbury Cup the storied WHITE BIRCH polo team won the Butler Handicap, clobbering AIRSTREAM by a score of 16-9 in the championship match. The Greenwich Polo Club was the scene of the action.

White Birch rode onto the polo grounds playing like a team possessed on both offense AND defense.
They swatted in 3 goals in the 1st Chukker, an amazing 5 in the 2nd Chukker and 2 more in the 3rd to head into Halftime with an intimidating 10-4 lead over their opponents from Airstream. Continue reading

BLUE DRAGONS PICKED TO REPEAT AS CONFERENCE CHAMPS
The preseason poll has selected the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS to repeat as Jayhawk Conference champions in 2015. Last year saw the Blue Dragons have the best season in team history and they fell just one game short of playing for the National Championship. Their lone loss of the season came against Iowa Western College, which wound up losing in the national title game.
Hutchinson College, meanwhile, won their first unshared Jayhawk Conference crown since 1996, won their 6th straight Salt City Bowl and are trying to repeat as conference champs for the first time since their Threepeat of 1948-1950.
Here’s how the preseason poll placed all eight teams in the Jayhawk Conference:

POLO: FINAL MATCHUP SET FOR THE BUTLER HANDICAP
Balladeer’s Blog continues its coverage of the world’s OLDEST team sport.
The other team playing in the championship match of the Butler Handicap at Greenwich Polo Club has been established. The AIRSTREAM NOMADS defeated the K.I.G. LIVERYMEN to advance to Thursday’s title game against Greenwich’s own WHITE BIRCH.
The Airstream team: Peter Orthwein (Ace), Guillermo Aguerro (Deuce), Michel Dorignac (Chevy), Mariano Gonzalez (Back)
The first Chukker ended in a 2-2 tie and set the pace for the rest of this defense-heavy match. At the end of Chukker number 5 Airstream held a 7 to 4 advantage over K.I.G. In the 6th Chukker the Liverymen shut out the Nomads and tied the game at 7-7, forcing a Golden Goal sudden death situation. Continue reading

FLORES OF THE DROVERS SIGNS WITH THE BREWERS
CHICKASHA – Another Drover is headed for his chance to make it in the pros after signing with the Mikwaukee Brewers franchise.
University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma pitcher Jose Flores followed the MLB Draft eagerly last week, waiting for a call that never came.
“I was getting nervous just watching the draft and talking to my agent,” Flores said.
Flores’ agent told him to keep his head high and assured him the right opportunity would come.
“Sure enough, a couple days later, I was just sitting here watching TV and I got a call from the Brewers,” Flores said. Continue reading
