COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND KICKS OFF TONIGHT

The final 3 championship games of the year for the divisions of college football covered by Balladeer’s Blog will be played tonight and tomorrow. NCAA Division 3 gets things started tonight in Salem, VA, where the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl will see the 7th straight clash between the Whitewater Warhawks (helmet at left) and the Mount Union Purple Raiders.

Yes, remarkably, both teams have survived the D3 playoff field of 32 teams for 7 YEARS IN A ROW, emerging when the dust settles to square off for the national championship. The teams have won 3 titles each in the preceding 6 years, so this is the rubber game of the match (so far). Adding to all that drama is the fact that Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH

This is my usual Saturday post where I provide links to updating scoreboards for the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers. First, though, my quick takes on some of last night’s games:

The Maritime College Privateers, one of the coolest-named teams in sports, carved up the Western Connecticut Colonials last night. Maritime won by a score of 48-0, setting up this season’s first post-victory ritual of breaking a two-by four. Hey, it’s odd but memorable!

The Catholic Cardinals at the Gallaudet Bison wound up being the game of the night, with the Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPTEMBER 3RD

Here is my weekly Saturday post providing links to updating scoreboards in the divisions of college football that Balladeer’s Blog covers. First, though, some quick comments about a few of last night’s games:

D2’s 6th- ranked  TAMK  Javelinas (the team that Hall of Famer Darrell Green played his college ball for)  picked up a road win last night with an authoritative 21-10 victory over the  Central Washington Wildcats.

The NAIA’s Mayville State Comets nearly pulled off an upset of a higher division team last night, but ultimately fell to the D2 Minnesota- Crookston Golden Eagles by a score of 31-29. With the loss the Comets are now 1-1 for the season.

In D3 football the Dartmouth Corsairs took down the Mt Ida Mustangs in a 24-21 Instant Classic of a game.

And now, links to each division’s scoreboards –

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOREBOARDS FOR SEPT 1ST – NAIA, NJCAA, D3 AND D2

Tonight all four of the divisions Balladeer’s Blog covers will be playing games. Last Thursday through Saturday everybody but NCAA Division 3 started their football season (so ignore what ESPN says about tonight being the start of  the 2011 college football season. They always ignore the divisions they don’t have the television contracts for.) Here are links for updated scoreboards for tonight’s games by division:

NCAA DIVISION 3 PRESEASON TOP 25: GUESS WHO NUMBER ONE AND NUMBER TWO ARE

For the last six seasons in a row the Whitewater Warhawks and the Mount Union Purple Raiders have faced each other in the D3 championship game. Proving once again that the football gods love drama, the Yankees and Red Sox of D3 football have split those games 3-3. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that once again UWW and Mt Union are ranked at one and two in the preseason poll. The defending champion Warhawks are at the top of the poll (“Ma” – rimshot) with the Purple Raiders right behind them. No surprise at number three, either. The Wesley Woverines are still playing third banana to the Big Two. Last season even with home field advantage in Continue reading
