MY TOP HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS HORROR FILMS

Regular readers may remember I love So Bad They’re Good movies here at Balladeer’s Blog. Here are my favorites from the legendary H.G. Lewis. WARNING: Extreme concepts, despite the inept presentation.

two thousand maniacsTWO THOUSAND MANIACS (1964) – For people who’ve never heard of Herschell Gordon Lewis, I’ll point out that he’s known as “the Godfather of Gore.” And not even GOOD gore, but the obviously fake kind that makes you laugh. Add to that the inept acting, bland dialogue and quickie production techniques like you’d get in old black & white flicks and you’ll understand the man’s Bad Movie magic.

When it comes to horror films – good OR bad – I’ve always preferred those with supernatural menaces to those with mere crazed human beings doing ugly deeds. It helps if the premise has clever lore baked in, and Two Thousand Maniacs definitely has that, no matter how rushed and poorly made it is.

One hundred years earlier, during America’s Civil War, the fictional Deep South town of Pleasant Valley (population two thousand) was utterly wiped out by renegade Union troops who destroyed every building and massacred every man, woman and child. Once every hundred years now, Pleasant Valley and its undead inhabitants will rematerialize for a few days, lure passing Northerners into it, and slaughter them as revenge for the ghost town’s destruction. BAD MOVIE PAGE: CURSE OF THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN (1974)

Let’s take a look at another Bad Movie Gem that I feel doesn’t get the kind of attention it deserves.

CURSE OF THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN – CategoryLaughably bad with an enjoyably weird premise but not fun-bad enough for my highest rating     This film could easily be reviewed as part of my segment called The Bad, The Weird And The Freaky, which examines weird westerns, especially with the Frontierado Holiday coming up the first Friday in August.

However, this film is set in the 1970’s, so to me that outweighs its western features and makes it deserving of my Bad Movie Page instead. Curse of the Headless Horseman twists a classic horror story in a way that even Paul Naschy himself must have stood in awe of.

The Washington Irving tale set in Sleepy Hollow gets transplanted to the American West, and instead of a Hessian soldier beheaded by a cannonball this Headless Horseman is  Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE: THE MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKALS (1969)

A goofy-looking were-jackal, an undead Egyptian princess and the fattest mummy in history! No, they’re not tonight’s Jeopardy contestants, they’re the main characters of another hilariously bad movie. From 1969 it’s The Mummy And The Curse Of The Jackals. THE MUMMY AND THE CURSE OF THE JACKALS (1969) – Category: A neglected bad movie classic that deserves a Plan 9-sized cult following     Depending on which film book you read this movie either did or did not have any theatrical release but thankfully it’s available on video. Part of the bad movie fun is provided by how poorly lit some scenes are, even though that prevents us from getting better looks at 1960′s Las Vegas, where the story takes place. In this film Anthony Eisley portrays an archaeologist who, hilariously enough, can’t Continue reading
