CONCORDIA CONQUERS DIVISION TWO – The NAIA’s CONCORDIA (MI) UNIVERSITY CARDINALS traveled to face the upper-level WAYNE STATE WARRIORS from NCAA Division Two. The Cardinals joined so many other NAIA teams who toppled D2 teams this year in a 24-23 Instant Classic.
HILLSDALE AT HOME – NCAA Division Two’s storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS played host to the NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY TIMBER WOLVES. The Chargers proved their determination to right this disappointing season, leading the Timber Wolves 17-7 at Halftime before winning it in a 40-18 blowout.
DOWN GOES NUMBER TEN – Staying in D2 for a moment, the MISSOURI WESTERN STATE GRIFFONS welcomed the number 10 team in the nation – the EMPORIA STATE HORNETS. This was a tale of two Halves, as the Griffons led 24-6 by the midpoint, but then had to hold on by their fingertips to pull off the Upset 34-31. Continue reading
“THAT WAS NUMBER FIIIIIVE!” – In NCAA Division Three, the ENDICOTT COLLEGE GULLS welcomed the number 5 team in the nation – the HARDIN-SIMMONS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS. For once Endicott didn’t choke in the spotlight, leading the Cowboys 3-0, 17-3 and 37-3 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters respectively. In the 4th, a garbage time TD from HSU made the final score 37-10.
NUMBER SEVEN TAKES A FALL – Up in the NAIA, the number 15 MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS faced the visiting 7th ranked COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES. The Orediggers parlayed a 17-7 opening Quarter lead into a 34-21 Halftime advantage. The 3rd Quarter ended with the Coyotes making it a 37-35 game before Montana Tech added a 4th Quarter TD to win out 44-35.
USCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – This USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) affair pitted the WILLIAMSON COLLEGE OF THE TRADES MECHANICS against the CAPP ACADEMY CRUSADERS. In a driving rain, the Mechanics led the Crusaders 7-0 in the 1st and 10-0 at the Half. A scoreless 3rd Quarter was followed by a CAPP rally attempt in the 4th as Williamson won the game 25-14.
DELTA STATE TAKES DOWN DIVISION ONE – The NCAA Division Two’s DELTA STATE STATESMEN welcomed NCAA Division ONE’s MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE DELTA DEVILS yesterday. The 1st Half was pretty tight with the Delta Devils clinging to a mere 7-6 edge at the break. The Statesmen came out of the locker room on fire and seized a 22-7 lead in the 3rd Quarter before blowing out Mississippi Valley State 35-7 in the 4th.
MARATHON GAME OF THE WEEK – To paraphrase Winston Churchill, “Never have so many football players played for so long for so few points.” The NEWBERRY COLLEGE WOLVES and their guests the EMORY & HENRY UNIVERSITY WASPS needed SIX OVERTIMES to finish their game. With that many OT’s you’d expect a score of at least forty-something points apiece instead of the 25-23 Wolves victory that we got.
KNOCKING OFF NUMBER TEN – Down in NCAA Division Three, the 22nd ranked SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY RIVER HAWKS visited the number 10 CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS. The Red Dragons led 14-7 in the 1st Quarter and 21-14 at Halftime. A 35-21 Cortland State advantage to end the 3rd Quarter was followed by a furious River Hawks rally in the 4th as they came back to win it 38-35.
INDIANA WESLEYAN CONQUERS DIVISION ONE – Each year plenty of NAIA teams upset higher division opponents and sometimes a few will even topple Division ONE teams. The INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS welcomed D1’s VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY BEACONS yesterday. After a scoreless 1st Quarter, the Wildcats went up 17-7 by Halftime, then had to hold on against a Beacons rally to cement the Upset 24-22.
NORTHWESTERN (IA) ALSO TAKES DOWN D1 – Not to be outdone, the NAIA’s NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS stunned their hosts the DRAKE UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS. The Bulldogs led 14-10 at the Half and 14-13 to end the 3rd Quarter but the Red Raiders tied it up 21-21 in the 4th. In Overtime, NC won out 27-24.
ARIZONA CHRISTIAN TOPPLES DIVISION TWO – Speaking of the NAIA downing D2 teams, the ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM played host to the FORT LEWIS COLLEGE SKYHAWKS. The Firestorm completely dominated the Skyhawks, leading them 14-3 at the break enroute to a 49-25 smackdown victory.
DIVISION TWO OWNS DIVISION ONE – Three Division 2 teams downed Division 1 teams on Saturday – the CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS edged their hosts the MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE DELTA DEVILS 24-21 ### The VIRGINIA STATE TROJANS won 33-24 at the NORFOLK STATE SPARTANS ### And the BOWIE STATE BULLDOGS doubled-up on the home standing DELAWARE STATE HORNETS 22-11.
KNOCKING OFF NUMBERS THREE & FOUR – NCAA Division 3’s 6th ranked ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES won a 34-31 Overtime thriller against the number 4 team in the nation – the TRINITY (TX) TIGERS ### And the (23) UW-RIVER FALLS FALCONS clobbered the 3rd ranked UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR CRUSADERS 45-22.

FIRST SEMIFINAL – The KEISER UNIVERSITY SEA HAWKS visited the GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS (should be the Zebras) in this game. The 1st Quarter ended with the Sea Hawks up 7-0 before expanding that to a 21-7 advantage by Halftime. After the break, Keiser University outscored Grand View 17-14 for a 38-21 Upset and a trip to the title game on December 17th.
SECOND SEMIFINAL – Up next the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS took the field against the INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS. A 17-0 Red Raiders lead in the opening Quarter remained unchanged at the Half. The 3rd Quarter ended with Northwestern College on top 31-0 and the 4th in a 38-7 Red Raiders win. It will be Red Raiders and Sea Hawks in the Championship Game.
FIRST QUARTERFINAL – The COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES OREDIGGERS faced their hosts the ANGELO STATE RAMS. The Orediggers led 14-7 in the 1st Quarter and 21-10 at the break. From there Colorado School of Mines managed a bit more separation from the Rams for a 42-24 Upset victory.
LINCOLN TOPPLES NCAA DIVISION TWO – The unaffiliated LINCOLN (CA) UNIVERSITY OAKLANDERS took it on the road against NCAA Division 2’s BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES. In a blow to the pride of the upper divisions, the Oaklanders emerged with a 20-17 Upset win in this Instant Classic.
KNOCKING OFF NUMBER SEVEN – In NCAA D2 the 24th ranked UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA WOLVES traveled to face the number 7 team in the country – the DELTA STATE STATESMEN. The Statesmen led 14-7, 28-17 and 35-24 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters respectively. In the 4th, the Wolves exploded for 28 points and a 52-42 comeback victory.
NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – Down in the NJCAA the number 8 COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS welcomed the 2nd ranked IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS yesterday. Believe it or not the Red Ravens held the Reivers to just 7 points and those came in the opening Quarter. Coffeyville led 16-7 at Halftime before winning the game 23-7.
KNOCKING OFF NUMBER THREE – In the NAIA the number 6 team in the nation – the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS – traveled to face the 3rd ranked LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS. A 7-7 tie at Halftime turned into a 21-13 Wildcats lead to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th Bethel U. held on for a 21-16 Upset of the Blue Raiders.
NUMBER SEVEN TAKES A FALL – Down in NCAA Division Three the 19th ranked SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY RIVER HAWKS played host to the number 7 JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BLUE JAYS. The River Hawks put the Blue Jays on Upset Alert at the midpoint with a 14-12 edge. Each team scored 12 points in the 2nd Half for a 26-24 Susquehanna victory.
DOWN GOES NUMBER NINE – Up in NCAA Division 2 the storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS welcomed the number 9 ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES. After a 7-7 1st Quarter tie the Chargers led 14-10 at the Half and then 22-20 in the 3rd Quarter before winning out by a final score of 36-20.
