BAD MOVIE: THE PRICE OF POWER (1969) SPAGHETTI WESTERN

Time for another look at a Weird Western in anticipation of the Frontierado holiday coming up on Friday, August 3rd. Once again, think of me as The Bronson Canyon Kid as I look at another weirdass western to get us all in the Frontierado mood. This flick restages the JFK assassination in the Wild West.

THE PRICE OF POWER (1969) – When it comes to Spaghetti Westerns most people are only familiar with the mainstream examples like the Clint Eastwood vehicles or the monumental classic Once Upon A Time In The West. There were literally more than Continue reading

FRONTIERADO DRINK RECIPE: DEUCES WILD

With the Frontierado holiday coming up on Friday, August 3rd we need to crank up our preparations. Here’s a drink recipe for those of legal drinking age.  I’ll also be giving the recipe for a Cactus Jack, but for right now I’ll give you the recipe for another traditional Frontierado drink. It’s called a Deuces Wild and like a Cactus Jack it’s my own recipe.

To make a Deuces Wild you first combine 2 parts Tequila with Continue reading

FRONTIERADO RECIPE: NEW MEXICO TERRITORY FRIED RICE

With the Frontierado holiday coming up soon (August 3rd this year) I figured I’d share another of my recipes for a typical Frontierado treat: New Mexico Territory Fried Rice.

Refry your preferred quantity of Spanish rice in a frying pan, stirring in chopped- up portions of Continue reading

FRONTIERADO RECIPE: TUMBLEWEED PIZZA

As an early Frontierado gift to my readers here is my personal recipe for Tumbleweed Pizza, the perfect snack to go with Silverado and whatever second Western you watch on the day of Frontierado itself, which this year falls on Friday, August 3rd.

Start with a few extra-large tortilla shells or round pita shells. Spread tomato paste and/or sauce around them, leaving as much crust room as you prefer. Spread shredded pepperjack cheese all over each shell until you completely cover the  tomato paste/sauce. Add small slices of Nopolito Cactus (it will Continue reading

FRONTIERADO MOVIE: BLACK NOON (1971)

Frontierado is coming up very quickly! Bigger than Life Day, trendier than Festivus, Frontierado falls on Friday, August 3rd this year. Veteran readers of Balladeer’s Blog know all about the joys of the Frontierado season, but newbies will be treated to their first-ever countdown to one of the grandest holidays of them all!

Per tradition I’m starting the countdown with a look at some Weird Westerns and as the happy day draws nearer I’ll examine more serious elements of Frontierado lore. For readers who want to find out what they’ve been missing click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/07/28/just-9-more-shopping-days-until-frontierado/

BLACK NOON – (1971) – Roy Thinnes stars as an Old West preacher who runs afoul of a practicing coven of witches. These witches operate out of a western town called Melas (three guesses) and provide Thinnes and his wife sanctuary after their wagon breaks down on their way west. Everything seems okay at first, but gradually it becomes clear that Continue reading

THE PERFECT THANKSGIVING EVE MOVIE

Just a note in the spirit of the holiday season to mention my favorite Thanksgiving Eve movie. Every Wednesday before Thanksgiving I make a point out of watching the musical Oliver! I know the Continue reading

HAPPY VETERAN’S DAY 2011

Well, it’s been nearly 100 years since November 11th, 1918 saw the end of World War One, or The Great War as it was called before anyone knew a second global conflict would occur. As we all know the date eventually became designated as the day for honoring the people who make it possible for the rest of us to lead our lives in relative safety. The following is what I posted last year on Veteran’s Day and I don’t think I can say it any better, especially with the presidential campaigns in full swing, so here it is again:

The irrational partisans of the political left and the political right often forget that the only reason any of them have the luxury of sitting back and making pompous, self-righteous pronouncements is because of the men and women who actually go out and DO something. And they do it even though they know that Continue reading

HAPPY FRONTIERADO!!! CELEBRATE WITH 6 MORE NEGLECTED WILD WEST FIGURES

All through the year we waited, and now it is here in all its glory! HAPPY FRONTIERADO to one and all! This is the first multi-continent celebration of this major holiday, with Buckshot Bryant, Doc Robyn and Kid Equus observing it in New Zealand and with Lady London and her faithful steed Gentleman George leading the festivities in Merry Old England! Six-Gun Sara, Cactus Cathy, Palmetto Bill, Kid Crimson, Bison Bloodworth, Amarillo Rose, Dusty Murtaugh, Doc Albany and Casino Bill and others are helping me, the Blackwater Kid, celebrate Frontierado right here in the USA!  To help mark this holiday I will offer up six more quick looks at neglected real-life western figures whose lives had as much drama as the better-known names from the American frontier.

6. THE MORMON KID – No, that’s not a joke, Matt Warner really was known as the Mormon Kid for the religion he left to pursue a wild life as an outlaw. Some traditions still hold that the Mormon Kid got his first experience with gunplay as a Continue reading

FRONTIERADO WEEK: THE BAD, THE WEIRD AND THE FREAKY

Well, it’s Frontierado Eve! We’ve all got our painted rocks on various bits of furniture around the house, we’ve all got our potted cacti with the toy gun-belts slung over them and for those old enough to drink there are Cactus Jacks and Deuces Wilds to be slammed down. In some homes families and friends will be gathering around to watch the official Frontierado Western, Silverado, later tonight. Others prefer to watch that movie on the day or night of Frontierado itself.

In the buildup to this major holiday I periodically reviewed my favorite weird westerns so to give us all a few more chuckles here’s one more.

JESSE JAMES’ KID (1966)

In my review of The Price of Power earlier this Frontierado season I mentioned how fond I am of those Spaghetti Westerns that distort the facts of the American west more outrageously than even our own home- grown westerns do. Jesse James’ Kid makes The Price of Power look like the writings of Herodotus.

In this deranged western which used to populate the 3am to 5am movie slot on television stations across the country we get the old-school bad movie fun of dubbing that never comes close to matching the movements of the performers’ lips. And that’s just the start. This film tells us that Billy the Kid was Jesse James’ son … yes, Jesse James’ son. And not only that but Continue reading
