COOLEST WNBA TEAM NAMES

With the WNBA season coming up what better time for a look at the coolest team names in the league’s history. This list will include franchises that folded along with teams that are still active.

Comets

12. HOUSTON COMETS

Established: 1997

Comment: The Comets were one of the Original Eight WNBA franchises and were the league’s very first dynasty. The Comets won the WNBA championship for the first four years of the league’s existence. To put that in perspective not even the NBA’s Jordan/Pippin Bulls or Kobe/Shaq Lakers were able to win four titles in a row.

Sparks

11. LOS ANGELES SPARKS

Established: 1997

Comment: Another Original Eight franchise, the Sparks labored in the shadow of the Houston Comets for years. In 2001 the Sparks seized the opportunity to unseat the Comets as Western Conference Champions and went on to win the 2001 and 2002 WNBA titles. High-profile University of Tennessee player Candace Parker joined the Sparks for the 2008 season. Continue reading →

QUINSIGAMOND COLLEGE WYVERNS

COOL-NAMED SPORTS TEAM: ACADEMY OF ART

ACADEMY OF ART URBAN KNIGHTS

Location: San Francisco, CA

Division: NCAA Division Two

Conference Affiliation: Pacific West Conference

Comment: You’d expect an academy of art to have an incredibly eye-catching logo like this but this institution takes things to the Nth degree by also having an unbelievably cool nickname for its sports teams.

Bonus: I was torn between which Urban Knights logo to use so I’ll just go ahead and use both. Behold: Continue reading →

COOL-NAMED SPORTS TEAM: VERMILION COLLEGE

VERMILION COLLEGE IRONMEN

Location: Ely, MN

Division: NJCAA

Comment: There are so many ways we could go here. We could do a Black Sabbath reference (and I’m betting that Iron Man is performed ad nauseum by their marching band) or maybe a Marvel Comics superhero reference. Continue reading →

COOL-NAMED SPORTS TEAM: OHIO STATE AT MARION

OHIO STATE-MARION SCARLET WAVE

Location: Marion, OH

Division: USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association)

Comment: The Scarlet Wave is a nickname every bit as cool as The Crimson Tide and The Green Wave. You can’t go wrong with names like this for sports teams as far as I’m concerned and I’ve been saying for years that when Syracuse changed their team’s names from The Orangemen to The Orange that they’d have been better off going with something like … Continue reading →
