Taylor TrojansTHE TAYLOR TROJANS RULE THE WORLD – As usual during college football season each weekend brings at least one NAIA team upsetting an upper division team – in this case NCAA Division TWO. For newbies to these levels of college football it’s like when a 1AA (FCS) team upsets a 1A (FBS) team. The NAIA’s TAYLOR TROJANS defeated the visiting D2 LANE COLLEGE DRAGONS in a 27-21 Instant Classic.

Lindenwood at BellevilleLU-BELLEVILLE: CO-RULERS OF THE WORLD – Another NAIA team – the LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY- BELLEVILLE LYNX notched yet another upset of an NCAA Division TWO team. LU-Belleville played host to the KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE PANTHERS yesterday. Even though the Lynx are in just their second year of playing intercollegiate football they have embraced the NAIA tradition of upsetting upper division foes, thrashing the Panthers 49-29.

Johnson_C_Smith_OLD8JOHNSON C SMITH RULES THE WORLD, TOO! – NCAA Division Two’s JOHNSON C SMITH UNIVERSITY GOLDEN BULLS did some world-conquering of their own yesterday. COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 19TH AND 20TH

Jones College Bobcats current helmetNUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – In the NJCAA last night the number 1 team in the nation, the MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST BULLDOGS, hosted the number 14 JONES COLLEGE BOBCATS. Both teams came into the game undefeated so all attendees knew that “someone’s 0 must go” to use an old cliche. Points flew like shrapnel in  A.L. May Stadium as these two juggernauts collided. In the end the Bobcats came out on top and unseated number one by a final score of 52-42.

Glenville State Pioneers helmetMINOR BLOWOUTS – The GLENVILLE STATE PIONEERS were very ungracious to the visiting FAIRMONT STATE FALCONS. COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2013

Siena Heights SaintsSIENA HEIGHTS RULES THE WORLD – Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog are aware that at LEAST one NAIA football team upsets a team from higher divisions every single week of the season. Yesterday the SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY SAINTS took it on the road against NCAA Division TWO’s SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE PUMAS. The Saints schooled yet another NCAA team on how well they play football in the NAIA by defeating them in a 35-31 Instant Classic. SHU trailed 17-14 at the half, then led 21-17 for a time before repeated lead changes set in. 

Lindsey_Wilson_KYLINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE ALSO RULES THE WORLD – The NAIA’s (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS also upset an NCAA Division TWO team yesterday. The Blue Raiders were on the road against D2’s KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE PANTHERS. Lindsey Wilson improved to 3-0 on the season with an authoritative 39-20 victory.   

North Greenville CrusadersNORTH GREENVILLE WANTS IN ON SOME OF THIS ACTION, TOO – NCAA Division 2’s NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS did some world-ruling of their own yesterday. They had traveled to face NCAA Division ONE’s Virginia Military Institute Keydets (yes, Keydets) and in a very impressive display of gridiron oomph they upset VMI by a final score of 37-24.  

Lincoln (MO) Blue Tigers helmetLINCOLN UNIVERSITY REDUCES GRAMBLING TO PAPER TIGERS – Another NCAA Division 2 team, the LINCOLN (MO) UNIVERSITY BLUE TIGERS, upset a Division One team. West Texas A&MOH, GIVE ME A HOME WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM … – Last night the WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES hosted the CHADRON STATE COLLEGE  EAGLES in one of the best games of the night. This Lone Star Conference versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash was a thrilling back and forth affair but when all was said and done the Buffaloes came out on top by a final score of 34-31.  

Mars Hill College helmetLIONS, HAWKS AND A LIGHTNING DELAY – The MARS HILL COLLEGE LIONS traveled to Georgia to take on the SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS in a game that suffered a lightning delay for more than an hour. The Hawks saw a 23-14 halftime lead evaporate in the 2nd half as the Lions retained their composure and stormed ahead for a 41-30 triumph. Things don’t get any easier for the 0-2 Hawks – their next opponents are D2’s defending champions, the VALDOSTA STATE BLAZERS.

* EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD * 

There were so many NCAA Division Two teams upsetting Division ONE teams this past weekend I need an entire section to cover all of them:

Merrimack College helmetTHE WARRIORS CAME OUT TO PLAAA- AAAAAY – Friday night D2’s MERRIMACK COLLEGE WARRIORS got a jump on the weekend’s orgy of upsets. The Warriors traveled to Staten Island to face Division 1’s Wagner College Seahawks under the lights. Both offenses lit up the scoreboard but in the end Merrimack College emerged with a 42-41 triumph in an undeniable Instant Classic!

Delta_StDUEL ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER DELTA – On Saturday the DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY STATESMEN from Division Two took it on the road to battle Division One’s Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils. MVSU may be the alma mater of the legendary Jerry Rice but the Statesmen proved to be more than a match for them, winning a gripping 24-14 gridiron epic.

CSU-PuebloHOW ‘BOUT THEM THUNDERWOLVES? – The COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO THUNDERWOLVES came into yesterday ranked number 6 in Division 2. They battled Division 1’s University of Northern Colorado Bears in a game for the ages. The Thunderwolves’ faithful will be talking about this clash for years as CSU-Pueblo toppled the Bears in their own house by a final score of 41-36.

 Florida Tech Panthers helmetABSOLUTE BEGINNERS – The FLORIDA TECH PANTHERS played their very first intercollegiate football game yesterday. Florida Tech, from Division 2, took on Division 1’s Stetson University Hatters, who were playing just their second football game since reviving their pigskin program this season. Concordia (NE) BulldogsCONCORDIA- NEBRASKA RULES THE WORLD – As always during college football season every week brings us at least one NAIA team upsetting upper division teams from the NCAA. Last week two teams upset Division ONE teams. Last night the CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS doubled- up on NCAA Division 2’s WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE CARDINALS in their own house! The final score in this game was Bulldogs 30  Cardinals 15.

Belleville Lynx helmetTEAMS KICKING BUTT – The BELLEVILLE LYNX are in just their 2nd year of intercollegiate football but are already 2-0 for this season. Last night they notched a road win over the veteran CENTRAL METHODIST UNIVERSITY EAGLES in a 41-14 rout.   ###   Also last night the PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS eviscerated the BLUEFIELD COLLEGE RAMBLIN’ RAMS by a final score of 53-16. Bluefield is in just their 2nd year of intercollegiate football as well.  

* NCAA DIVISION 2 *

Northwest_Missouri_StBEARCATS GROWLING – The 3rd ranked NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS were the highest- ranked D2 team in action last night. These perennial D2 football powers welcomed the number 18 SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS and plucked their feathers to the tune of 45-24.

North_Carolina-PembrokeTOP 25 UPSETS – Yesterday saw 2 upsets of ranked teams. The UNC-PEMBROKE BRAVES toppled the visiting 8th ranked WINSTON-SALEM STATE RAMS in a 25-21 nailbiter.   ###   And the SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA BULLDOGS sent the number 25 HARDING UNIVERSITY BISON home stinging from Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM AUGUST 31ST, 2013

No matter what ESPN says, this was the SECOND weekend of college football action. It’s just that they don’t have the contract to broadcast the games in the divisions that kicked off last week.

William Penn helmetCLASH OF RANKED TEAMS – The 16th ranked WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN visited the 9th ranked BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS in the highest profile game of the day. The Statesmen, a perennial power in NAIA football, dominated on both sides of the ball and turned this much-anticipated gridiron clash into a rout. The final score wound up being William Penn 34  Bethel 8.  

Rocky_Mountain_MT_OLD5ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH – The ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS improved to 2-0 yesterday. After defeating Jamestown College back in Week One the Battlin’ Bears took it on the road this weekend and clashed with the number 14 SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS. After an undeniable Instant Classic of a game Rocky Mountain College emerged with a 35-30 victory.

Southwestern CollegeBITTERSWEEET WELCOME – The OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON played their first intercollegiate football game yesterday. The SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS came to town to welcome the Bison to NAIA pigskin competition. The Bison played a very respectable game but in the end the experience of the Moundbuilders enabled them to prevail in this 26-22 game for the ages!

Cumberlands_KYBATTLE FOR THE BRASS LANTERN – The 8th ranked UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS hosted the UNION (KY) BULLDOGS for possession of the Brass Lantern. The Patriots retained this coveted trophy by turning the Bulldogs into their figurative prison brides. It may sound odd for a Union team to lose on Labor Day weekend (rimshot) but Cumberlands crossed Union’s picket lines in a Continue reading

Pikeville BearsPIKEVILLE RULES THE WORLD – We aren’t even at Labor Day yet but already we’ve had the 2013 season’s first NAIA team upset of an NCAA Division ONE team! Yesterday the PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS played road warriors against Division One’s Morehead State Eagles and came out on top in a 13-10 defensive epic. Every week in college football season sees at least one NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) team topple higher level NCAA teams so stay tuned!

HELMETGrand_View_IAGRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY ALSO RULES THE WORLD!  – What did I tell you about NAIA teams and upsets? Last night saw ANOTHER NAIA team topple an NCAA  Division ONE team in their own house! Iowa’s GRAND VIEW VIKINGS won a 21-16 Instant Classic against Division One’s Drake University Bulldogs. They know how to play football in the NAIA!

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM AUGUST 24TH

Balladeer’s Blog presents its usual Sunday look at the previous day’s college football action on this, the REAL opening weekend for the 2013 season.

Rocky Mountain CollegeGETTING A JUMP ON THE WEEKEND – in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS and the JAMESTOWN COLLEGE JIMMIES kicked off the action Friday night. The Jimmies led RMC by a score of 13-6 in the 2nd Quarter but the Battlin’ Bears’ quarterback Bryce Baker (Official Balladeer’s Blog nickname B Squared) stayed cool. Baker rallied his team with three passing Touchdowns and a rushing score as well. Rocky Mountain College took a 20-13 lead by halftime and won this opening game of the 2013 season by a final score of 34-20. 

Hutchinson Blue DragonsBLUE DRAGONS SCORCH THE RED RAVENS – In this colorful matchup yesterday from the Jayhawk Conference the HUTCHINSON BLUE DRAGONS took it on the road and torched all the feathers off of the COFFEYVILLE RED RAVENS. The score in this clash was tied up 7-7 at the end of the 1st Quarter but Hutch’s Ryan Weese added 2 Field Goals in the 2nd Quarter to give the Blue Dragons a 13-7 lead at the half. Hutchinson added 21 points in the 3rd and 10 more in the 4th with Coffeyville managing just 7 points total in the 2nd half. Hutchinson’s Quarterback “Lethal” Luke Barnes went 28 of 46 for 228 yards and 2 Touchdowns in this 44-14 rout.   

 Iowa Western CollegeTHE BATTLE IN THE VALLEY – The IOWA WESTERN REIVERS, the reigning champions of NJCAA Football, began their defense of the title yesterday by facing the TRINITY VALLEY COLLEGE CARDINALS in the 2nd Annual Battle in the Valley. A very game Cardinals team led 7-3 at the end of the 1st Quarter but the Reivers notched a 2nd Quarter Touchdown to take a 10-7 halftime lead. Iowa Western held a 17-10 advantage going into the 4th Quarter but the Cardinals, driving from their own 7 yard line, moved the ball 93 yards to knot the game up at 17 all with under Continue reading
