There were so many NCAA Division Two teams upsetting Division ONE teams this past weekend I need an entire section to cover all of them:
THE WARRIORS CAME OUT TO PLAAA- AAAAAY – Friday night D2’s MERRIMACK COLLEGE WARRIORS got a jump on the weekend’s orgy of upsets. The Warriors traveled to Staten Island to face Division 1’s Wagner College Seahawks under the lights. Both offenses lit up the scoreboard but in the end Merrimack College emerged with a 42-41 triumph in an undeniable Instant Classic!
DUEL ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER DELTA – On Saturday the DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY STATESMEN from Division Two took it on the road to battle Division One’s Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils. MVSU may be the alma mater of the legendary Jerry Rice but the Statesmen proved to be more than a match for them, winning a gripping 24-14 gridiron epic.
HOW ‘BOUT THEM THUNDERWOLVES? – The COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO THUNDERWOLVES came into yesterday ranked number 6 in Division 2. They battled Division 1’s University of Northern Colorado Bears in a game for the ages. The Thunderwolves’ faithful will be talking about this clash for years as CSU-Pueblo toppled the Bears in their own house by a final score of 41-36.
ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS – The FLORIDA TECH PANTHERS played their very first intercollegiate football game yesterday. Florida Tech, from Division 2, took on Division 1’s Stetson University Hatters, who were playing just their second football game since reviving their pigskin program this season. Despite the Hatters’ one-game edge in experience the Panthers came out on top in a 20-13 nailbiter.
“THERE WERE NINE PUMAS IN THAT CREVICE” – Another D2 team vanquishing a D1 opponent was the SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE PUMAS. They hosted the Valparaiso University Crusaders in a Hoosier State showdown. When all was said and done in this riveting and nerve-wracking clash the Pumas were the team left standing. The final tally was Pumas 34 Crusaders 31.
A BATTLE OF CATS AND DOGS – The TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY GOLDEN TIGERS, who hail from Division 2, visited the Alabama A&M Bulldogs from Division 1 and treated them like they treat their Thanksgiving rivals from D1 – the Alabama State Hornets. The Golden Tigers notched yet another victory over a higher division team with their authoritative 23-7 win over the Bulldogs.

BATTLE OF CHAMPIONS – The two most recent National Champions of NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) football clashed yesterday. The 4th ranked SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS welcomed the number 2 MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS in this battle of champions. The game lived up to the hype and was tied up at 24-24 at the end of regulation. In Overtime the Cougars emerged victorious by a final score of 31-24.
OTHER TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – The unranked KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS hosted the 9th ranked BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS and sent them home with an 0-2 record after beating them 24-10. ### The MONTANA WESTERN BULLDOGS likewise left the visiting number 14 SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS winless by edging them in a 38-34 epic. ### And the FRIENDS FALCONS took the (20) DOANE TIGERS into Overtime before defeating them 24-21.
TOP 25 UPSETS – D2 – The 22nd ranked UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS survived a 10-9 homestand against the number 7 ASHLAND EAGLES. ### The (24) SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY RAMS stunned the (14) SHIPPENSBURG RED RAIDERS by crushing them 33-0. ### Similarly the WEST CHESTER GOLDEN RAMS devastated the (19) NEW HAVEN CHARGERS 45-14. ### And the CONCORD UNIVERSITY MOUNTAIN LIONS notched an 18-10 road win over the number 23 LENOIR-RHYNE BEARS.
TOP 25 UPSETS – D3 – The unranked CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS took it on the road and upset the number 16 SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEAGULLS in a 17-10 Instant Classic. ### There were no other upsets in the rankings in D3 yesterday but the 19th ranked FRANKLIN GRIZZLIES threw a scare into the (1) MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS. The Purple Raiders are the most dominant dynasty in D3 football history and usually win regular season games in routs. The Grizzlies fought the good fight before falling by a score of 30-27.

HOW SWEDE IT IS! – The BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES played road warriors yesterday against the SOUTHWEST ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS. The Swedes’ offense dominated, propelling them to a 35-20 triumph. ### The (19) GRAND VIEW VIKINGS likewise notched a road win, in their case an edge-of- your seat affair over the SIENA HEIGHTS SAINTS by a final talley of 24-21.
THE DEFENDERS UNCONQUERED – The long-suffering fans of the DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS got to start the 2013 season off on the right note. Not only did the Defenders log a rare gridiron victory but they did it ON THE ROAD! Dordt College edged the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS from the brand-new North Star Conference in a tight 14-13 game for the ages. Congratulations to the Defenders!
I GUESS YOU COULD CALL IT AN IN-“SPIRE”-ING VICTORY – The UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY (KS) SPIRES traveled to take on the OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON, who are in the very first season of their revived football program. The Bison gave the veteran Spires almost more than they could handle before USM managed a nerve-wracking 36-30 victory over OBU.
OTHER TOP 25 TEAMS TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS – The (7) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS, following up last year’s outstanding season, kicked around the homestanding EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS 23-7. ### The (13) NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE (IA) RED RAIDERS sent the BACONE WARRIORS home nursing a 55-37 smackdown. ### And the top-seeded MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS doubled up on the visiting VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS by a score of 56-28.
ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The traveling AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES absolutely eviscerated the HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY INDIANS by an unbelievable score of EIGHTY to THIRTEEN! ### The TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS impaled the visiting CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS 57-6. ### And the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS remained perfect with a 56-23 mauling of the DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY BLUE HAWKS.
OUR DIVISION CAN BEAT UP YOUR DIVISION – Balladeer’s Blog resumes its coverage of the intense rivalry between NAIA football teams and NCAA Division 3 teams. Yesterday the NAIA’s PRESENTATION COLLEGE SAINTS won a classic 23-22 homestand against the LUTHER COLLEGE NORSE from D3. ### And the NAIA’s TAYLOR TROJANS sliced and diced D3’s visiting ANDERSON RAVENS 58-7. ### D3’s homestanding LOUISIANA COLLEGE WILDCATS crushed the NAIA’s BELHAVEN BLAZERS 38-7. ### And the D3 UW-STOUT BLUE DEVILS held serve 35-20 against the NAIA’s DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS.

WELCOME TO THE GRIDIRON, ALDERSON-BROADDUS! – The ALDERSON-BROADDUS COLLEGE BATTLERS played their institution’s very first intercollegiate football game yesterday … and not only that but THEY WON! That’s a fairly rare accomplishment but the Battlers pulled it off, winning a back-and- forth homestand against the PACE UNIVERSITY SETTERS out of the Northeast Ten Conference. The final score in this milestone game for Alderson- Broaddus College was a very tight 31-28. Way to go Battlers! Hopefully your team has many more victories ahead of them!
” HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON? ” – Yesterday’s clash that earned this week’s designation as the Marathon Game of the Day was the hard-fought matchup between the NORTHERN STATE WOLVES and the WAYNE STATE (NE) WILDCATS. It took THREE OVERTIMES to decide a victor and when all the dust had settled the homestanding Wolves won 29-27 with the difference being a missed 2 point conversion by the Wildcats.
PUSHOVERS NO LONGER – There was a time when the SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN (as in Scottish Clan) were a football joke and it was just a question of who got to defeat them on a given weekend. Not any more. The Clan have been respectable lately and yesterday notched a 41-27 road win over the HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY LUMBERJACKS in the iconic stadium called the Redwood Bowl.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The NORTH GREENVILLE CRUSADERS won a 26-24 gridiron epic against the visiting ALBANY STATE GOLDEN RAMS. ### The NOTRE DAME COLLEGE FALCONS held serve against the MALONE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS by a score of 37-31. ### And the MCKENDREE BEARCATS came out on top of the visiting TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGONS in a 32-28 nailbiter.

GATE CITY SOUP BOWL – How could you NOT think this was an event that Balladeer’s Blog would cover? Yesterday the GUILFORD COLLEGE QUAKERS battled the GREENSBORO COLLEGE PRIDE in the 2013 edition of the Gate City Soup Bowl. The game lived up to the hype and then some, as the teams jousted and maneuvered for 4 Quarters before the Quakers at last emerged with a win by a score of 31-28.
WORKING OVERTIME – The NICHOLS COLLEGE BISON went into Overtime with the visiting WESTFIELD STATE UNIVERSITY OWLS and defeated them 28-27 when the Owls missed an Extra Point. ### And the AUSTIN COLLEGE KANGAROOS were on the road against the RHODES COLLEGE LYNX and in the Overtime extra session dropped the decision to them by a final score of 24-21. Congratulations Lynx!
WARFARE OVER DIPLOMACY – The WASHINGTON & LEE UNIVERSITY GENERALS welcomed the FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE DIPLOMATS for this annual clash between a team from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the Centennial Conference. The game was a classic from start to finish with the ODAC’s Generals sneaking past the Diplomats for a 14-13 triumph.
A TALE OF THREE ENGINEER TEAMS – Yesterday saw the homestanding WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS rout the CURRY COLLEGE COLONELS in a 48-28 smackdown. ### Meanwhile the RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS sent the NORWICH CADETS home with a 20-7 loss. ### And the MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERS took it on the road and defeated the POMONA- PITZER SAGEHENS in a 28-26 nailbiter.
YOU CAN’T WIN A SHOOTOUT WITHOUT BULLETS – The GETTYSBURG COLLEGE BULLETS lead off this category. Yesterday the Bullets invaded the home field of the MISERICORDIA COUGARS and won a 62-40 offensive orgy. ### And the OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY POLAR BEARS won a one-way shootout by crushing the ALFRED STATE PIONEERS 55-0. Alfred State just moved up from the JUCO ranks to the 4 year level.
DOUBLING UP – The PACIFIC UNIVERSITY BOXERS kicked off their 2013 campaign on a positive note, notching a 20-10 road victory over the ADRIAN COLLEGE BULLDOGS. ### The AUGUSTANA VIKINGS defeated the visiting MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH LIONS by an identical 20-10 score. ### And in a “double plus two” outcome the ALBRIGHT LIONS dispatched the KEAN COUGARS in a dominating 30-14 performance.

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT – It was a scorching NINETY-EIGHT DEGREES at the 7pm CT kickoff in the game between the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS and the GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS. The Blue Dragons bounced back from last week’s loss and led 14-7 by the end of 1st Quarter. By halftime Hutch had extended that lead to 21-10 and went into the 4th Quarter leading 27-10. After holding off a spirited comeback attempt by the Broncbusters the homestanding Blue Dragons improved to 2-1 with a 33-24 victory.
FALCONS IN FLIGHT – The LACKAWANNA COLLEGE FALCONS traveled to face the GLOBE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KNIGHTS yesterday. This was easily the tightest and most thrilling NJCAA game of the day as these two teams fenced on the gridiron for 4 gripping Quarters. When all was finally said and done in this back and forth affair the Falcons flew home glorying in a 25-19 triumph in this Instant Classic of a game!
BOTH TEAMS’ “0” HAD TO GO – The winless COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS hosted the undefeated NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA A&M GOLDEN NORSEMEN in a game that surprised everybody. The experts were already penciling in another victory for the Golden Norsemen but the Red Ravens refused to cooperate. Showing poise and toughness Coffeyville won the game handily by a final score of 37-19.
SHUTOUTS – Instances of defensive perfection in the NJCAA yesterday included: The CENTRAL LAKES COLLEGE- BRAINERD RAIDERS, who logged a 20-0 road win over the MESABI RANGE TECH NORSE. ### The NORTH DAKOTA STATE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE WILDCATS won a 7-0 defensive epic against the homestanding COLLEGE OF DUPAGE CHAPARRALS. ### And the IOWA WESTERN REIVERS, the defending champions of NJCAA football, folded spindled and mutilated the ELLSWORTH PANTHERS by a score of SIXTY-ONE to NOTHING!
VARYING DEGREES OF BUTT-KICKINGS – The BLINN COLLEGE BUCCANEERS at last found their mojo for this season and keelhauled the SOUTHEAST SPARTANS to the tune of 55-7. ### The IOWA CENTRAL TRITONS chopped up the DAKOTA COLLEGE AT BOTTINEAU LUMBERJACKS in a 66-19 laugher. ### And the NASSAU COLLEGE LIONS annihilated NPA by a score of 48-7.

OPENING WEEKEND TIGHTIES – The CCCAA is always the last of the divisions covered by Balladeer’s Blog to kick off their season. The tightest games of their opening Saturday saw the PIERCE COLLEGE BRAHMA BULLS eke out a 17-16 road win over the VICTOR VALLEY RAMS. ### The SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE VAQUEROS likewise won a one-point game on the road by defeating the ALLAN HANCOCK COLLEGE BULLDOGS 15-14. ### And the YUBA 49ers won a 17-14 homestand against the GAVILAN RAMS.
WORKING OVERTIME – The GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS, the official team of Jo “Buckshot” Bryant, were tied up 21-21 with the COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS COUGARS at the end of regulation. After holding the Cougars scoreless in OT the Rustlers put up a touchdown to win 27-21. ### And the SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE PANTHERS took on the SIERRA WOLVERINES and pulled out their own Overtime win by a score of 37-31.
THE DEFENSE OF THE CROWN BEGINS – Last year’s Cinderellas who went on to win the CCCAA championship, the BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES, began defending their title yesterday. The Renegades were on the road for Game One against the SANTA ANA COLLEGE DONS (as in Old California Dons, not Mafia Dons) and logged a win in a dominant 24-9 performance.
THIRTY-FIVE TO TWENTY-EIGHT- The SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE OLYMPIANS (how can you not love that name) traveled to face the LOS ANGELES SOUTHWEST COUGARS and won a 35-28 Instant Classic. ### And the CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE COMETS hosted the FOOTHILL COLLEGE OWLS, defeating them by that exact same final score – 35-28. What are the chances?
VARYING DEGREES OF BUTT-KICKINGS – The CHABOT COLLEGE GLADIATORS spanked the visiting SAN JOAQUIN DELTA MUSTANGS by a score of 32-17. ### The AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS made the homestanding MONTEREY PENINSULA LOBOS their prison brides in a 40-2 dismemberment. ### And the HARTNELL PANTHERS turned the LOS MEDANOS MUSTANGS into glue by a final score of 41-7.
