COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER FIFTH

HEADLINES

NAIA OVER NCAA DIVISION TWO – The NAIA’s FLORIDA MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY LIONS traveled to face the higher NCAA Division Two team the ALLEN UNIVERSITY YELLOWJACKETS. Allen University parlayed their 10-7 1st Quarter edge into a 31-21 advantage by Halftime. From there the Lions shut out their opponents and came from behind for a 38-31 Upset. 

KNOCKING OFF NUMBER THREE – Down in NCAA Division Three, the 5th ranked team in the nation – the WHEATON COLLEGE THUNDER – played host to the number 2 UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS. The Thunder put Mount Union on Upset Alert with their 17-7 lead at the Half only for the Purple Raiders to tie things up at 17-17 in the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th, Wheaton College managed a 24-23 victory.

TAKING DOWN NUMBER SIX – Up in NCAA Division Two, the 17th ranked UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY OILERS traveled to play the number 6 UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS. The Oilers were out in front of UI 20-10 after 2 Quarters of play. In the 2nd Half Findlay shut out the Greyhounds while upsetting them 30-10.

UNLUCKY SEVEN – Back up in the NAIA the number 24 NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS visited the country’s 7th ranked MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie changed into a 21-14 Red Raiders lead at Halftime. The Mustangs knotted things up 28-28 going into the 4th Quarter, where Northwestern College won 43-35.  

NUMBER TEN TAKES A FALL – Staying in D3 for the moment, the number 11 ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES welcomed the 10th ranked UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT LACROSSE EAGLES. A 7-7 opening Quarter deadlock became a 17-7 Johnnies advantage at the midpoint. UW-Lacrosse pulled to within 17-13 to end the 3rd Quarter, but SJU triumphed 24-21 in the 4th.

CHARGING TO A BLOWOUT – In this game NCAA Division 2’s storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS took the field against the visiting MCKENDREE UNIVERSITY BEARCATS. The Chargers led 14-7, 35-14 and 48-21 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters, respectively. The 4th ended in a 55-24 Hillsdale victory. 

TOPPLING NUMBER ONE – Dropping down to the CCCAA, the SIERRA COLLEGE WOLVERINES took it on the road against the top-ranked COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO BULLDOGS. CSM was on top 14-10 come Halftime, but after the break the Wolverines roared back to win the game by a final score of 29-25.

AND NUMBER TWO COMES TUMBLING AFTER – Also in the CCCAA, the number 9 RIVERSIDE CITY COLLEGE TIGERS welcomed the 2nd ranked GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS. The Tigers put up 3 points in the 1st Quarter – the only offense in the opening Half! From there, each team scored 17 points as Riverside dragged down the Rustlers 20-17.

NAIA VS NCAA DIVISION THREE

NAIA OVER NCAA D3 – The SIMPSON UNIVERSITY REDHAWKS were on the road against the WHITTIER COLLEGE POETS. The Redhawks seized control early and dominated Whittier College on both sides of the ball for the entire game. When all of the dust had settled, Simpson University had manhandled the Poets to the tune of FIFTY-SIX to FOURTEEN.

NCAA D3 OVER NAIA – The GRINNELL COLLEGE PIONEERS hosted the MOUNT MERCY UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS. A 7-7 Halftime tie ended as a 16-13 Pioneers win    ###    And the LAGRANGE COLLEGE PANTHERS mauled the visiting POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS 31-7.

*** Because the NAIA win over D2 counts as 2 wins, the NAIA wins this week 3 games to 2. ***

OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The only other Upset in the NAIA rankings yesterday came in the game between the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Purple Tigers) and their guests – the 18th ranked UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS. By Halftime the Tigers led USF 28-7. From there the Cougars outscored ONU 14-3 but still lost to them 31-21.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS defeated the visiting ST. XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS by a final tally of 38-31    ###    And the WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN eked out a 14-13 win over the MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS. 

NCAA DIVISION TWO

UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The EMPORIA STATE HORNETS won 21-10 at the number 11 PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS   ###   Meanwhile, the SHEPERD UNIVERSITY RAMS toppled the 16th ranked FROSTBURG STATE BOBCATS 34-26   ###   And the UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS won 34-23 at the number 21 LENOIR-RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS.

TWO-POINT WONDER – This game pitted the NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY TRAILBLAZERS against the home standing CATAWBA UNIVERSITY INDIANS. Catawba held a 21-14 advantage at Halftime. After the break, the Trailblazers took over, leading 27-26 in the 3rd Quarter and winning out 40-38 from there.

NCAA DIVISION THREE

TELL IT TO THE LUTHERANS – The PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY LUTES took the field against their visiting rivals – the CAL LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY KINGSMEN. A 10-0 Lutes lead in the 1st Quarter was cut to 24-16 by the Half. From there, the Kingsmen made it a 30-30 game to end the 3rd Quarter before Pacific Lutheran triumphed 37-30 in the 4th.

COOL NAME BOWLS – The UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT STEVENS POINT POINTERS survived a 17-12 visit from the AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY AUGGIES   ###   Nest, the LORAS COLLEGE DUHAWKS won 31-16 over the ST. OLAF COLLEGE OLES   ###   And the KNOX COLLEGE PRAIRIE FIRE won 16-0 at the EUREKA COLLEGE RED DEVILS.

NEWPORT STAKES – The CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS welcomed the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (Shipbuilders). The Captains were truly the masters of their fate as they led the Apprentice School 22-7 by Halftime. After the break, CNU left the Builders further and further behind on their way to a 43-14 smackdown.

NOT VERY GENTLEMANLY – In this game the CENTENARY COLLEGE GENTLEMEN played host to the WESTGATE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY GOLD RAVENS. The Gentlemen achieved defensive perfection against Westgate Christian while mustering a decent amount of points for themselves. Centenary College beat the Gold Ravens 29-0.

NJCAA

CLOSE CALL FOR NUMBER ONE – The country’s top ranked IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS got almost more than they could handle at the COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS. Coffeyville led 7-0 and 14-10 in the 1st and 2nd Quarters. The 3rd Quarter ended in a 17-17 tie and the 4th in a 24-24 deadlock. In Overtime the Reivers grabbed a 27-24 victory.

INSTANT CLASSICS – The DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS toppled the visiting number 12 GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS in a 26-21 affair   ###   Elsewhere, the (13) TRINITY VALLEY COLLEGE CARDINALS won 22-17 at the KILGORE COLLEGE RANGERS   ###   And the NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA A&M GOLDEN NORSEMEN triumphed 21-13 at the (8) BUTLER (KS) GRIZZLIES.

CCCAA

“THAT WAS NUMBER FIIIVE!” – In this game the 17th ranked SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE OLYMPIANS clashed with the number 5 MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES. A 9-3 Mount SAC lead in the 1st Quarter became a 10-9 Olympians edge by Halftime. The Mounties went up 16-10 in the 3rd only for San Diego Mesa College to come back to win 20-19 in the 4th.

ROAD RAGE – The (14) VENTURA COLLEGE PIRATES logged a 33-20 victory at the (9) FULLERTON COLLEGE HORNETS   ###   Meanwhile, the ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE MARAUDERS trounced the home standing WEST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE WILDCATS 45-14   ###   And the (22) BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES won 28-14 at the (25) ALLAN HANCOCK COLLEGE BULLDOGS.
