The West Coast League is a baseball league consisting of American and Canadian teams. For the U.S. Washington and Oregon are represented, and for Canada British Columbia and Alberta are represented.
College athletes hoping to enhance their resumes for potential pro careers compete in the league’s schedule of games from June through August every year so as not to interfere with their college team’s slate of games.
Here are some of the WCL’s coolest team names and logos.
WALLA WALLA SWEETS
Location: Walla Walla, WA
Founded: 2009
Comment: The team name comes from Walla Walla Sweet Onions.
BELLINGHAM BELLS
Location: Bellingham, WA
Founded: 1999 (joined WCL 2005)
Comment: The Bellingham Bells mascot is called the Bellinghamster because supposedly Bellinghamster is what Bellingham residents call themselves.
PORTLAND PICKLES
Location: Portland, OR
Founded: 2015
Comment: The Pickles team name is said to reflect both the offbeat culture of Portland and the baseball term “pickle” as a runner caught in a rundown, or “in a pickle.”
VICTORIA HARBOURCATS
Location: Victoria, BC
Founded: 2012
Comment: A citywide contest selected the team name HarbourCats, a twist on Victoria Harbour.
YAKIMA VALLEY PIPPINS
Location: Yakima, WA
Founded: 2014
Comment: In keeping with the team’s “Pippin Apple” theme, the Pippins’ home stadium is called the Orchard.
MEDFORD ROGUES
Location: Medford, OR
Founded: 2013
Comment: Obviously, the team name Rogues is a reference to pirates, and their mascot is named Rowdy.
KAMLOOPS NORTHPAWS
Location: Kamloops, BC
Founded: 2020
Comment: Because Southpaws are the term for left-handed players, this team’s Canadian locale inspired the name Northpaws.
GRESHAM GREYWOLVES
Location: Gresham, OR
Founded: 2015
Comment: How can you not love a kickass team name like Greywolves?
WENATCHEE APPLE SOX
Location: Wenatchee, WA
Founded: 2000 (joined WCL 2005)
Comment: Washington state’s association with apples has inspired the names of several teams throughout the state.
SPRINGFIELD DRIFTERS
Location: Springfield, OR
Founded: 2021
Comment: This team’s name is intended to reflect Springfield’s “slow-drifting” lifestyle.
EDMONTON RIVERHAWKS
Location: Edmonton, AB
Founded: 2020
Comment: The Riverhawks became Alberta’s first WCL team in 2020.
