OTTAWA (AZ) OFFS D2 – The NAIA’s OTTAWA UNIVERSITY (AZ) SPIRIT took on the visiting NCAA Division Two team the WESTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS. The already storied Spirit added to their fame with a 38-31 triumph over the upper division team. For newbies this is like a 1AA team defeating a 1A team.
CARDINALS PLAY GIANT SLAYER, TOO – Another NAIA team – the (6) CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS – paid a visit to the NCAA Division Two team the KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE PANTHERS. The Cardinals took care of business, knocking off the D2 Panthers in a 17-14 game for the ages.
WESLEY TOPPLES FPU – In NCAA Division Three the WESLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES traveled to take on the Division Two team the FRANKLIN PIERCE UNIVERSITY RAVENS. The Ravens were playing in their first ever intercollegiate football game and it showed. The Wolverines tore them apart SIXTY-NINE to NOTHING!
D2 OVER D1 – Another early season Upset of a lower division team over a higher division team here. The Division Two KENTUCKY STATE THOROBREDS were on the road against Division One’s ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY COLONIALS. The Thorobreds managed a 13-7 victory over their hosts.
MORE D2 OVER D1 – A record number of D2 Upsets of D1 teams in one day also saw the TRUMAN STATE BULLDOGS take down the DRAKE BULLDOGS 10-7, the VIRGINIA UNION UNIVERSITY PANTHERS drub the HAMPTON PIRATES 36-17, the EAST STROUDSBURG WARRIORS beat the WAGNER SEAHAWKS 24-14 and the MIDWESTERN STATE MUSTANGS trash the NORTHWESTERN STATE DEMONS 33-7.
NUMBER EIGHT FALLS – In the NAIA the 12th ranked GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS (should be the Zebras) visited the number 8 team in the nation – the BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS. The Vikings put the Wildcats on Upset Alert with a 10-3 Halftime lead. From there they shut out Baker U for a 20-3 victory.
USCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – The NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS from the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) welcomed the NCAA D3’s GREENSBORO UNIVERSITY PRIDE. The Builders led the Pride 16-8 at Halftime before going on to win the game 23-8.
EIGHTY-FOUR – In the NJCAA the storied ASA COLLEGE (NY) AVENGERS took it on the road against the HUDSON VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS. The Avengers parlayed a 7-0 1st Quarter lead into a 42-0 Halftime advantage on their way to an astonishing EIGHTY-FOUR to NOTHING triumph!

OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – On top of Grand View over Baker the KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS knocked off their guests the (21) GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS 30-27 ### And the EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS notched a 24-21 road win over the (20) SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (should be the Sea Gulls).
FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT – The NAIA’s INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS paid a visit to the NCAA Division One team the BUTLER UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS. The Wildcats held a 7-0 1st Quarter lead in the 1st Quarter and made that a 17-7 lead by Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended in a 17-17 tie and the 4th in a 24-24 deadlock. In OVERTIME the Indiana Wesleyan Field Goal was answered by a Butler TD as they won it 30-27. NAIA taking a D1 team into Overtime is impressive!
ROAD WARRIORS – The SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES downed the homestanding MISSOURI BAPTIST UNIVERSITY SPARTANS 45-37 ### Meanwhile the (15) COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES doubled-up on their hosts the MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS by a score of 28-14 ### And the (9) DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS shut out the UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES 34-0.
WORKIN’ OVERTIME – The (17) UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS prevailed in OT over the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES 30-23 in their own house ### Elsewhere the CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS won 20-13 at the CENTRAL METHODIST UNIVERSITY EAGLES ### And the (10) REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Rottweilers) defeated the UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS 20-17.
NCAA DIVISION TWO
UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The only Upset in the D2 rankings yesterday saw the MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES pay a call on the number 21 HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS. The Huskies were chasing the Chargers 7-3 in the 1st Quarter but got on top of them 23-7 at Halftime. From there they coasted to a 29-14 victory.
A TASTE OF FOOTBALL – The TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGONS took it on the road against the NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY TIMBERWOLVES for their Taste of Football event. The Dragons were on top 16-3 at the Half but then had to hold on by their fingertips against a furious Timberwolves rally to win the game 22-19.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The WEST LIBERTY STATE HILLTOPPERS notched a 33-30 road victory over the WHEELING JESUIT UNIVERSITY CARDINALS ### Meanwhile the OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY PANTHERS edged their hosts the SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY RAMS in a 23-21 thriller ### And the COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY MAVERICKS downed the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS 37-33 in their own house.
NCAA DIVISION THREE
UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The HOBART STATESMEN toppled the visiting (13) COLLEGE AT BROCKPORT GOLDEN EAGLES by a lopsided score of 33-7 ### And the AURORA UNIVERSITY SPARTANS won a 50-40 shootout against their guests the (25) SAINT NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS.
MARATHON GAME OF THE WEEK – That designation this week goes to the clash between the KENYON COLLEGE LORDS and the homestanding CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY CARDINALS. A 17-6 Halftime lead for the Cardinals became a 17-17 tie to end the 4th Quarter. The 1st Overtime ended in a 24-24 deadlock. In DOUBLE OVERTIME Catholic U put up 7 points before the ballsy Lords went for 2 on their TD and won it 32-31!
D3 OVER NAIA – Balladeer’s Blog always covers the gridiron rivalry between the NCAA Division Three and the NAIA. This week D3’s (7) UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS TOMMIES obliterated the NAIA’s visiting TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS 69-3 ### The COLLEGE OF SAINT SCHOLASTICA SAINTS won a 42-35 OT affair against the MAYVILLE STATE COMETS ### And the HENDRIX WARRIORS held off the LYON COLLEGE SCOTS 28-20.
*** D3 won these three games but the NAIA upset two Division Two teams, which victories each count as two. This week the NAIA wins it 4-3.
NJCAA
BATTLE IN THE TOP TEN – The number 1 team in the nation – the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS – took it on the road against the 7th ranked IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS. A 14-7 lead for the Blue Dragons became a 20-13 advantage by Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended in a 34-20 Hutchinson lead and from there the Blue Dragons won it 34-27.
WHEN RANKED TEAMS CLASH – The number 15 MONROE COLLEGE MUSTANGS welcomed the 19th ranked NASSAU COUNTY COLLEGE LIONS. The Mustangs shut out the Lions in the 1st Half for a commanding 35-0 lead. From there Monroe College coasted to a 52-27 victory.
SHUTOUTS – The MESABI RANGE COLLEGE NORSE played host to the DAKOTA COLLEGE AT BOTTINEAU LUMBERJACKS and clobbered them 21-0 ### Meanwhile the GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS blanked the visiting NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA A&M GOLDEN NORSEMEN 26-0 ### And the (10) GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS utterly eviscerated their guests the ELLSWORTH COLLEGE PANTHERS to the tune of SIXTY-ONE to NOTHING!
BLOWOUTS – The CISCO COLLEGE WRANGLERS totaled the visiting TEXAS A&T DRILLERS by a score of 56-7 ### The FOND DU LAC TRIBAL COLLEGE THUNDER tripled-up on the VERMILION COLLEGE IRONMEN 42-14 ### And the COLLEGE OF DUPAGE CHAPARRALS trounced their hosts the ARKANSAS BAPTIST COLLEGE BUFFALOES 47-7.
