Through the first two weeks of the NJCAA Football season, the Hutchinson Community College football team was the only team of the preseason Top 5 to escape without a loss.
On Tuesday, the Blue Dragons made history by achieving their first No. 1 ranking in football in program history.
The Blue Dragons (2-0) took over the top spot after preseason No. 1 East Mississippi, No. 2 Iowa Western, No. 3 Garden City and No. 4 Jones all suffered losses.
The first regular-season Top 5 is now populated by Hutchinson at No. 1, Kilgore at No. 2, Butler at No. 3, Northwest Mississippi at No. 4 and East Mississippi at No. 5.
The voting for the first regular-season poll of 2019 was extremely tight. Hutch and Kilgore tied for the most points from the voting committee at 303 points. But the Blue Dragons had seven first-place votes to Kilgore’s three. Butler actually had five first-place votes and 285 points.
Garden City remains in the Top 10 at No. 10 and Fort Scott jumps into the national ranking at No. 20. Highland and Independence are receiving votes.
Hutchinson’s previous high in the national rankings was No. 2, which lasted for three weeks from October 5 to October 26, 2010. When the Blue Dragons reached No. 2 in 2010, the Jayhawk Conference owned the top three teams in the nation in Butler, the Blue Dragons and Coffeyville – that was the first time in 19 years the same conference owned the top spot.
The preseason No. 5-ranked Blue Dragons opened the season with a 41-16 road win at Ellsworth on August 22 and then defeated Independence 31-21 on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
The Dragons will be on the road for two straight tough games – at No. 7 Iowa Western on Saturday and at No. 20 Fort Scott on September 14. The Dragons have a bye week before a home game against No. 3 Butler at Gowans Stadium.
