NAIA OVER NCAA DIVISION TWO … YET AGAIN – Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog know that NAIA football teams often upset higher division teams in NCAA Division Two. Yesterday the NAIA’s UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS found themselves on the road against D2’s QUINCY UNIVERSITY HAWKS. The Fighting Saints notched an authoritative 41-26 upset win.
D3 OVER D2 – An NCAA Division Three team borrowed a page from the NAIA yesterday by upsetting a D2 team. The 15th ranked UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT OSHKOSH TITANS traveled to face the Division Two team called the LINCOLN (MO) BLUE TIGERS. A 7-7 Halftime tie wound up as a 17-7 victory for the Titans.
NUMBER EIGHT TAKES A FALL – In NCAA Division Two the VALDOSTA STATE BLAZERS visited the number 8 team in the nation – the UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS. The Blazers put the Tigers on Upset Alert by Halftime with a 35-14 lead, then after the break they coasted to a 58-24 triumph.
… AND NUMBER NINE CAME TUMBLING AFTER – Also in D2 the COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES OREDIGGERS welcomed the country’s 9th ranked COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES. A 21-14 1st Quarter advantage for the Orediggers remained unchanged at the Half. From there Colorado School of Mines outscored the Thunder Wolves 14-7 to win the game 35-21.
WELL-OILED MACHINE – The Game of the Week in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) featured the WILLIAMSON COLLEGE OF THE TRADES MECHANICS against the visiting ONONDAGA STATE OGRES. The Mechanics dominated on both sides of the ball in a 34-6 smackdown.
UPSET IN THE TOP TEN – Meanwhile in the NJCAA the number 9 team in the nation – the ARIZONA WESTERN COLLEGE MATADORS – coincidentally hosted the 8th ranked EASTERN ARIZONA COLLEGE GILA MONSTERS. In an undeniable Instant Classic the Matadors snuck past the Gila Monsters 16-13.
NAIA VS NCAA DIVISION THREE

DICKINSON STATE OVER UW-LACROSSE – The NAIA’s number 20 DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS took it on the road against NCAA Division Three’s 23rd ranked UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT LACROSSE EAGLES. The Blue Hawks turned a 7-3 edge in the 1st Quarter into a 14-10 lead at the break. A 21-point 3rd Quarter propelled Dickinson State to a 35-17 triumph.
TELL IT TO THE SPARTANS – Another NAIA over D3 victory in this game which pitted the MISSOURI BAPTIST UNIVERSITY SPARTANS against the homestanding UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT RIVER FALLS FALCONS. The Spartans were on top 10-7, 24-20 and 31-20 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters respectively. MBU went on to win the game 38-28.
SPUD BOWL – The sole NCAA D3 victory yesterday came from the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT STEVENS POINT POINTERS over the visiting DAKOTA STATE TROJANS. The Pointers led 24-14 at Halftime but the Trojans cut that to a 31-28 edge to end the 3rd Quarter. UW-Stevens Point exploded in the 4th for a 51-28 win.
*** THE NAIA WINS WITH TWO VICTORIES TO ONE. THEY HAVE NOW WON THREE WEEKS THIS YEAR TO NONE FOR NCAA DIVISION THREE. ***
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – There was only one Upset in the NAIA rankings on Saturday. The UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA-WESTERN BULLDOGS played host to the number 14 ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS in a Frontier Conference clash. After a scoreless 1st Quarter the Bulldogs led 10-0 at the Half. That became a 17-14 3rd Quarter edge and finally a 24-21 victory.
VICTORY AT LAST – Three games into their second intercollegiate football season in 77 years the TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY RAMS notched a win. The Rams welcomed the TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS and went on top 13-0 in the opening Quarter and 27-0 by Halftime. From there Texas Wesleyan coasted to a 36-7 rout of the Steers.
WORKIN’ OVERTIME – The (22) ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM took it on the road against the LYON COLLEGE SCOTS. The Firestorm led 7-3 in the 1st Quarter but trailed the Scots 13-10 at the break. The 3rd Quarter ended with Lyon College up 16-10 before ACU came back to force Overtime with a 23-23 tie. In the extra session the Firestorm emerged with a 26-23 win.
NCAA DIVISION TWO
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY PEACOCKS led the (10) WINONA STATE WARRIORS 14-9 at Halftime, then held on by their fingertips for a 34-33 Upset ### And the storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS toppled their hosts the (18) OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY PANTHERS by a final score of 34-18.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE RANGERS took the field in a 30-24 victory over the visiting HENDERSON STATE REDDIES ### Meanwhile the TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGONS got past their hosts the ALDERSON- BROADDUS UNIVERSITY BATTLERS 29-24 ### And the EMPORIA STATE HORNETS notched a 20-17 road win at the UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT KEARNEY LOPERS.
WONDER ON THE ROAD – Saturday saw the ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS travel to take on the OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON. The Wonderboys kept the Bison off the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter while putting up 17, 7 and 7 more points in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters respectively. The final score in this dominant performance was Arkansas Tech 31 OBU 7.
COMEBACK WIN FOR NUMBER ONE – The NCCAA’s top-ranked CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS – who are number 8 in the NAIA rankings – marked Family Day with a visit from the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS. Despite leading 14-3 at Halftime the Cardinals found themselves trailing 18-14 in the 4th Quarter. Concordia responded with 13 unanswered points for a 27-18 triumph.
THE BIG SAGU – The number 5 SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS traveled to face the WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS (should be the Flying W’s). The Lions trailed 17-7 in the 1st Quarter but led 23-17 at the break. In the 2nd Half SAGU got more and more separation to win the game 54-23.
OFF THE SCHNEID – The UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN (MN) EAGLES were on the road against the GREENVILLE COLLEGE PANTHERS yesterday. The Eagles led 7-0 in the opening Quarter and 17-7 at Halftime. Seven more points in the 4th Quarter ended the scoring in this game as U of N notched a 24-7 triumph. The Eagles are now 1-2.
NCAA DIVISION THREE
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TITANS did battle with the (12) WHEATON COLLEGE THUNDER and toppled them 24-12 ### Meanwhile the THOMAS MORE COLLEGE SAINTS knocked off the (16) UW-PLATTEVILLE PIONEERS in a 35-28 Instant Classic ### And the UNION COLLEGE DUTCHMEN crushed the (25) SPRINGFIELD PRIDE 45-10 in their own house.
MARATHON GAME OF THE DAY – This distinction goes to the game between the RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS and the homestanding UTICA COLLEGE PIONEERS. Regulation ended in a 17-17 deadlock. Neither team scored in the 1st Overtime, they each got a Field Goal in the 2nd OT, and the Engineers won it 23-20 in the 3rd OT.
WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A BASEBALL GAME BROKE OUT – The OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BATTLING BISHOPS clashed with the COLLEGE OF WOOSTER SCOTS and edged them 9-7 ### And the MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS logged a 10-7 road win at the TRINITY (TX) TIGERS.
OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – In addition to the (9) over (8) upset covered in the Headlines the TYLER COLLEGE APACHES trailed the (14) NAVARRO COLLEGE BULLDOGS 41-35 in the 4th Quarter but turned things around for a 59-41 win ### And the (20) BUTLER (KS) GRIZZLIES toppled the (17) COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS 22-0.
LUCKY SEVEN – The number 7 GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS visited the 13th ranked INDEPENDENCE COLLEGE PIRATES. The Broncbusters were behind 14-0 in the 1st Quarter and 21-18 at Halftime. After the break Garden City College outscored the Pirates 10-0 for a 28-21 victory.
ALL-NAME GAMES – The IOWA CENTRAL COLLEGE TRITONS welcomed the COLLEGE OF DUPAGE CHAPARRALS and proceeded to eviscerate them to the tune of 50-6 ### The HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS scorched the FORT SCOTT COLLEGE GREYHOUNDS 61-21 ### And the CISCO COLLEGE WRANGLERS survived a 34-27 visit from the KILGORE RANGERS.
